Through accidents, hidden actors are brought into view, silent intermediaries become full-blown mediators, and black boxes are pried open. Based on fieldwork with electronic musicians in Soweto, South Africa, this paper asks how one might conceptualize actor–networks in a context where accidents and failures are ubiquitous, even expected aspects of musical activity. Because of the fragility of musical settings, my interlocutors de-emphasize the way that actors are constituted through relations (because these relations are constantly shifting and breaking apart) and instead emphasize the relative autonomy of individual components. Hence, if we are to develop a theory of musical mediation that lives up to the challenges posed by South African electronic music, it is necessary to supplement actor–network theory with a framework capable of accounting for both relationality and the non- relational perdurance of autonomous objects. -

Volume XXX • Number 22 • May 28, 2004 FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein returned to his hometown of Rapid City, SD, along with fellow commissioner Michael Copps for the THE third of six field hearings to discuss how broadcasters are serving local communities. Adelstein told the 300 or so in attendance that MAIN STREET “broadcasters must act as trustee of public interest” when they receive Communicator Network their FCC license. As always, the two commissioners were supportive of the concept of more local programming, and those in attendance appreciated their comments. But there was quite another opinion of AA TT TT LL EE FCC Chairman Michael Powell, who proved to be a no show for TT RR Wednesday’s events because of “scheduling difficulties”. Translation – “Don’t schedule me for any of these public hearings where I have to 30th Anniversary 30 1974 - 2004 defend the direction of my commission” (you may remember that Powell encountered a hostile crowd at last month’s hearing in San Antonio). I contribute to existing research in marketing by developing a novel framework that conceptualizes markets as constituted of three levels, and by explaining the contribution of each level to the creation of a new market category. My findings emerge from a qualitative inquiry of the creation of the category of Electronic Dance Music (EDM). I find that each level contributes differently to the creation of a mainstream cultural category. Local innovation networks (or LINs) unite consumers and producers and provide unique elements that facilitate the creation of new cultural products by consumers. Niches serve as a bridge between these local networks and a mainstream market. Niche actors contribute to the creation of a boundary infrastructure that supports the transfer, translation, and transformation of the knowledge associated with an innovative cultural product. This, in turn, facilitates the movement of an innovative cultural product from a local network to a mainstream market. Mainstream actors diffuse elements of the innovative cultural product and open what Bourdieu calls “a space of possibles”. -
