Social networks describe the complex relationships of individuals and groups in multiple overlapping contexts. Influence in a social network impacts behavior and decision making in every setting in which individuals participate. This study defines a methodology for modeling and analyzing this complex behavior using a Flow-Model representation. Multiple objectives in an influencing effort targeted at a social network are modeled using Goal Programming. Value Focused Thinking is applied to model influence and predict decisions based on the reaction of the psychological state of individuals to environmental stimuli. This research advances the science of Operations Research and its application to broad classes of problems dealing with social networks. Application areas span academic, private sector, and government analysis. Sample cases are used in this research from the private sector and government. Specifically, influencing foreign government decision making is demonstrated for the case of Iran. Counter-terrosim applications are demonstrated for a sample case using Usama Bin Ladin. The contributions of this research serve private and public sector users. The capture and release of the 15 British soldiers in Iran1 calls for comparison with the takeover of the US embassy in Tehran by Iranian revolutionary students in 1979, which was a major turning point in Iran’s ideological attack on the US (“the Great Satan”) and the West. 2. Many student leaders responsible for the 1979 takeover have now become senior figures in the Iranian regime, mostly in the reformist bloc.2 Even now, the incident remains widely popular in Iran and is considered one of the formative experiences of the Islamic revolution. Even though the latest incident shows that the Iranians are basically willing to employ such tactics, there is a clear difference: the current regime avoided making use of the incident to inflame the emotions of the Iranians and the rest of the world, and released the hostages within a relatively short time. 3. The ethos of the takeover of the embassy is used by Iran as a deterrent to demonstrate the country’s firm stand against the international community, particularly as stances on the nuclear issue are becoming more polarized. Thus, for example, after Security Council Resolution 1737 was passed,3 President Ahmadinejad gave a speech at the site of the former US embassy in which he condemned the West (December 24, 2006).

Trade volume reaches USD 41 billion and 620 million As per the latest figures released by the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration USD 19 billion and 639 million of goods have been exported and USD 21 billion and 981 million of goods have been imported into the country during the first five months of the Iranian calendar year (starting March 21, 2014). The data show an increase of 20.83% for non-oil exports and of 33.59% for imports compared to the same time last year. The largest shares of goods were imported from Iran by China, Iraq, UAE, Afghanistan and India. The main Iranian export products included liquefied propane, liquefied methanol and butane. The goods Iran imported most of were wheat with a share of 4.97%, vehicles with internal combustion piston engine (more than 1500cc) with 3.66%, rice with 3.47%, corn with 2.63%, and soy meal with 2.42%. The main exporters of goods to Iran were UAE, China, India, South Korea and Turkey respectively. Indigenous automobile production reaches 400k in five months The Iranian automobile production has reached about 405,000 during the first five months of the Iranian calendar year (beginning on March 21, 2014). This corresponds with an increase of 74.3% compared to the same time last year. Eight different automobile models were mainly produced by Iran’s two largest manufacturers SAIPA (Société Anonyme Iranienne de Production Automobile) and IKCO (Iran Khodro).

    Iran, Gulf Security, and U.S. Policy Kenneth Katzman Specialist in Middle Eastern Affairs August 14, 2015 Congressional Research Service 7-5700 www.crs.gov RL32048 Iran, Gulf Security, and U.S. Policy Summary Since the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979, a priority of U.S. policy has been to reduce the perceived threat posed by Iran to a broad range of U.S. interests, including the security of the Persian Gulf region. In 2014, a common adversary emerged in the form of the Islamic State organization, reducing gaps in U.S. and Iranian regional interests, although the two countries have often differing approaches over how to try to defeat the group. The finalization on July 14, 2015, of a “Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action” (JCPOA) between Iran and six negotiating powers could enhance Iran’s ability to counter the United States and its allies in the region, but could also pave the way for cooperation to resolve some of the region’s several conflicts. During the 1980s and 1990s, U.S. officials identified Iran’s support for militant Middle East groups as a significant threat to U.S. interests and allies. A perceived potential threat from Iran’s nuclear program emerged in 2002, and the United States orchestrated broad international economic pressure on Iran to try to ensure that the program is verifiably confined to purely peaceful purposes. The international pressure contributed to the June 2013 election as president of Iran of the relatively moderate Hassan Rouhani, who campaigned as an advocate of ending Iran’s international isolation.
