Transformations to Lisbon's Terreiro Do Paço
URBAN TRANSFORMATION: CONTROVERSIES, CONTRASTS and CHALLENGES TRANSFORMATIONS TO LISBON’S TERREIRO DO PAÇO DIANE BRAND Address: School of Architecture Victoria University of Wellington NEW ZEALAND Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT After a devastating earthquake, tsunami and fire in 1755, Lisbon’s Terreiro do Paço, or Palace Square, was transformed by the Marquis of Pombal into a state of the art 18th century urban space called Praça do Comércio This paper looks at the configuration and use of this space from the 16th to the 18th century, tracing customary, ceremonial and institutional events, with particular reference to the role of ephemeral architecture in reconfiguring the space’s relationship to either river or land. An analysis of the paintings in Lisbon’s Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino (Navy Archives), Museu da Cidade de Lisboa (City Museum of Lisbon) and the Muesu Nacional dos Coches (National Coach Museum) shows the square transitioned over two centuries from a space fully engaging the Tagus to a condition that captured the space and engaged it with the reconstructed city quarter behin. INTRODUCTION The paper aims to show how, over several centuries, the Terreiro do Paço has transitioned from a space where customary uses have fully engaged the River, to a condition where the space has been reclaimed by the city beyond. This transition had as much to do with various institutional presences as it did with the ephemeral structures which graced the space during state occasions and sought to re-orient the square towards either city or sea. A range of ceremonial and institutional occasions will be examined, including royal and religious processions, autos da fé and commercial exchange. -

Eurovision Rules Brief
EUROVISION RULES Participation: The participants of the Eurovision Song Contest are not people, they’re not even countries, they’re broadcasters. In order to participate, a broadcaster must be an “active” (i.e., due paying) member of the European Broadcasting Union. This is a confederation of broadcasters that lie within the European Broadcasting Area. The European Broadcasting Area as defined by the International Telecommunication Union: “The "European Broadcasting Area" is bounded on the west by the western boundary of Region 1, on the east by the meridian 40° East of Greenwich and on the south by the parallel 30° North so as to include the western part of the USSR, the northern part of Saudi Arabia and that part of those countries bordering the Mediterranean within these limits. In addition, Iraq, Jordan and that part of the territory of Turkey lying outside the above limits are included in the European Broadcasting Area.” Thus allowing Israel and Morocco to compete without actually being in Europe. Beyond the geographical limitations on participation, broadcasters must provide free, nation-wide service. Liechtensteiner broadcaster 1FLTV tried to get around this rule in 1964, creating a song to enter into the Contest. The EBU quickly rejected this entry, as the 1FLTV1 is not in the EBU. Broadcasters have until the December immediately preceding the Contest to file the appropriate paperwork for participation and pay the entry fee. There can only be one entry per country. However, broadcasters can work together within a country to supply a joint entry. Countries then have until mid-March, when the heads of the various delegations meet in the host city, to submit their official entry (lyrics, backing track, and performing artist). -

SEEINGLISBON A GUIDE TO GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR STAY magentablackcyanyellow ES959734_OTECG0817_cv1.pgs 08.22.2017 19:44 ADV It‘s Better, It‘s Different – Welcome to the city of discoverers Vasco da Gama began his ingenious discovery tours in the city on the western edge of Europe and greatly enhanced people’s conception of the world. He strongly questioned some approaches to knowledge and paved the way for trade with India. Following his achievements, Lisbon enjoyed a time of great prosperity that came to a sudden end following the disastrous earthquake in 1755. What we experience as an impressive city image today, especially the Baixa, was created in the 18th century. Only the Torre de Belém still reminds us of the time of great sailors and their untiring spirit of discovery. Of course, the time of individual explorations is long past, but the urge for new knowledge has remained unchanged. Today, it is a great number of people who work on the front lines with curiosity, diligence and persistence to bring about progress. They have come to Lisbon as well, to make new discoveries by sharing scientific and practical approaches. Not only in lectures, workshops and discussions but also in dialogues with industry, at the Oertli booth for example. Discover the total range of cataract and posterior segment surgical platforms, the latest functions of the OS4 device, an amazingly simple MIGS method and the new FEELceps line, or simply discover the friendliness and competence of our employees at booth no P263.
