  • Public and Private Broadcast Media in Turkey: Developments and Controversies
Public and Private Broadcast Media in Turkey: Developments and Controversies Radio and television in Turkey constitute the focal point of technologic, legal, cultural, economic and political discussion. They are also considered as a power and supervision tool by those ones in the country who manage societies, political and commercial power groups and media researchers.1 Especially, TV has been viewed as the most effective tool of media in the Turkish land2. Such functions of broadcast media can serve as a channel for projecting the political views of the public.3 Over the past few years, the Turkish broadcast media has been at an extremely important position with respect to its influence on the society. Recently, an important increase is in question in the number of private radio and television organizations, where public broadcast has a long history in the nation. The swift increase in private radio-television organizations, live nested with political aims and economical purposes. Particularly, when effect of economic liberalization and globalization were experienced, the overt and covert influence of private radio-television broadcasting over democratization has been questioned by the whole society. It is simply because the present structures and objectives of private radio-television organizations are based on facilitating the works of media owners and use of their power over society. History of Turkish Broadcast Media The effect of broadcast media on the public intensifies as a result of developments in communication media and technologies, and whether these developments support democratic practices, whether the government puts pressure on broadcast media and whether broadcast media is a force for the good of the public are subjects wildly debated in Turkey.

BELARUS: RELIGIOUS FREEDOM SURVEY, OCTOBER 20201 By Olga Glace, Forum 18 Belarus correspondent Before the UN Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Belarus on 2 November, Forum 18 notes continuing violations of freedom of religion and belief and of interlinked freedoms of expression, association, and assembly. These have worsened amid widespread continuing protests against falsified results of the August 2020 presidential election, and against the regime's other serious violations of the human rights of the people it rules. After the regime's falsification of the August 2020 presidential election results and violence against people taking part in the ongoing protests, public events to pray for Belarus and for violence by the regime to end have increased. The regime has increasingly used Administrative Code Article 23.34 ("Violation of the procedure for organizing or conducting a mass event or demonstration") against those taking part in public prayer events.

Letter from the publisher HELLO THERE! DEAR READER, 1 We’ve all heard the same advice when it comes to dieting: no late-night food. It’s one of the few pieces of con- ventional wisdom that most diets have in common. But as it turns out, science doesn’t actually support that claim. In Always Eat After 7 PM, nutritionist and bestselling author Joel Marion comes bearing good news for nighttime indulgers: eating big in the evening when we’re naturally hungriest can actually help us lose weight and keep it off for good. He’s one of the most divisive figures in journalism today, hailed as “the Walter Cronkite of his era” by some and deemed “the country’s reigning mischief-maker” by others, credited with everything from Bill Clinton’s impeachment to the election of Donald Trump. But beyond the splashy headlines, little is known about Matt Drudge, the notoriously reclusive journalist behind The Drudge Report, nor has anyone really stopped to analyze the outlet’s far-reaching influence on society and mainstream journalism—until now. In The Drudge Revolution, investigative journalist Matthew Lysiak offers never-reported insights in this definitive portrait of one of the most powerful men in media. We know that worldwide, we are sick. And we’re largely sick with ailments once considered rare, including cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease. What we’re just beginning to understand is that one common root cause links all of these issues: insulin resistance. Over half of all adults in the United States are insulin resistant, with other countries either worse or not far behind.
