Photo MEDIA SPOTLIGHT Monument Valley Cinematic Symbol of the American West For the complete photos with media resources, visit: http://education.nationalgeographic.com/media/cinematic-symbol-west/ Monument Valley is a wide expanse straddling the border of the U.S. states of Arizona and Utah. It is marked by enormous rock features, including mesas, cliffs, and buttes. The most famous landscape of Monument Valley probably includes the Mittens, a pair of buttes with thin "thumb" outcrops. In dozens of films stretching back almost a century, Monument Valley has stood as a symbol of the American West. What "the West" means has changed over time. The first movie to bring Monument Valley to the attention of the American public was Stagecoach (1939). Stagecoach is the story of a group of white settlers, violently attacked by Apaches while traveling across the Arizona and New Mexico territories. The settlers, including the outlaw the Ringo Kid, are looking to start new lives for themselves in the West of the 1800s. The Ringo Kid is played by John Wayne, an American actor who soon became associated with Western movies and, often, America itself. The film was directed by John Ford, one of the most iconic and influential directors of all time. Ford went on to make nine moves in Monument Valley. John Ford was also the director of My Darling Clementine (1946), a retelling of the famous "Gunfight at the O.K.

  • Beyond Cognitive Estrangement – the Future of Science
EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF MEDIA STUDIES www.necsus-ejms.org NECSUS Published by: Amsterdam University Press Beyond cognitive estrangement The future of science fiction cinema Stephen Zepke NECSUS 1 (2):91–113 DOI: 10.5117/NECSUS2012.2.ZEPK Keywords: cinema, cognitive, dystopia, future, science fiction, utopia Introduction Science fiction is about the future. This is an obvious thing to say, though its obviousness conceals a debate that has perhaps not yet taken place – a debate over the nature of this future. Science fiction generally takes the future to be self-evident; the future is ‘the day after tomorrow,’ or another day more distant, but in any case a day on which the human struggle continues. As we will see, science fiction futures in this sense express our utopian hopes and dystopian nightmares, distilling in often spectacular visions what we see as best and worst about our present. Both Darko Suvin and Frederic Jameson have argued for a science fiction future in this sense, as a ‘critical’ exploration of our present conditions and their limits. However, there is an alternative future, a future undetermined by the present – a future that explodes in an event that changes the condi- tions of life and takes us beyond the merely existent. This would be a future that was not simply a reflection of current modes of being, but the eruption of a becoming capable of producing something genuinely ‘new’. Such an understanding of the future can be found in Friedrich Nietzsche’s concept of the ‘untimely’ and in the work of Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze, and Felix Guattari that follows and makes use of it.1 It can also be found in certain rare but invaluable science fiction films that escape their conditions of possibility to give us visions of…something else.

It challenges many of the assumptions underlying prevailing accounts of the period, including the makeup of the orthodox “canon” of New Hollywood movies, the time frame within which the movies were contained, and the role played by the critical establishment in determining the ways in which the movies of the period were understood. Bringing together industrial context, textual analysis and critical (re)interpretation, it examines the complex interplay of factors that allowed a movie such as Easy Rider to achieve commercial and canonical success, while so many of its contemporaries and imitators failed to make an impact, either at the box office or within the annals of film history.

  • A History and Theory of the Post-Apocalyptic Genre In
VISIONS OF AFTER THE END: A HISTORY AND THEORY OF THE POST-APOCALYPTIC GENRE IN LITERATURE AND FILM by BRETT SAMUEL STIFFLEMIRE JEREMY BUTLER, COMMITTEE CHAIR JASON BLACK SUZANNE HORSLEY KRISTEN WARNER FRED WHITING A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Communication & Information Sciences in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2017 Copyright Brett Samuel Stifflemire 2017 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Textual genre criticism and close readings of novels and films reveal that, in addition to chronicling catastrophes’ aftermaths, the post-apocalyptic genre envisions a future world in which traditional apocalyptic ideology is inadequate and unsatisfactory. While the full apocalyptic trajectory traditionally includes an end met by a new beginning, moments of cultural crisis have questioned the efficacy of apocalyptic metanarratives, allowing for a divergent, post- apocalyptic imagination that has been reflected in various fictional forms. The post-apocalyptic genre imagines a post-cataclysmic world cobbled together from the remnants of our world and invites complicated participation as readers and viewers engage with a world that resembles our own yet is bereft of our world’s meaning-making structures. The cultural history of the genre is traced through early nineteenth-century concerns about plagues and revolutions; fin-de-siècle anxieties and the devastation of the First World War; the post- apocalyptic turn in the cultural imagination following the Second World War, the atomic bombs, and the Holocaust; the Cold War and societal tensions of the 1960s and 1970s; late twentieth- century nationalism and relaxation of Cold War tension; and renewed interest in post- apocalypticism following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
