COURTSIDE YOUR WEEKLY UPDATE ON NETBALL’S 2006 NATIONAL BANK CUP Semi Finals A & B Review – 19 June 2006 Magic though to final, Sting get second chance in Major Semi Final Waikato/BOP Magic supported by Sleepyhead regained their top form in their semi final match against Ascot Park Hotel Southern Sting on Friday, booking Magic a home final. Magic’s Irene van Dyk outplayed the Sting defenders to record 43 goals from 44 attempts (98%), while Tanya Lund shot at 78% (25/32). Sting coach Robyn Broughton made the most of her attacking depth rotating Tanya Dalton, Belinda Colling and Natalie Avellino in the shooting circle, finally having all three on court with Avellino donning the Wing Attack bib, but Magic’s Casey Williams (player off the match) limited the Sting’s ability to convert the their attacking ball to goals. Fujifilm Force hosted Ballantynes Canterbury Flames on Sunday in a hotly contested semi final at North Shore Events Centre. Although the Flames led the game 10-8 at the end of the first quarter, Force turned the game around in the second quarter, and led for the remainder of the game winning 42-39, with captain Temepara George winning player of the match. The winning Force have now earned a place in the major semi final against the Sting on Friday 23 June, with the winner facing the Magic in the 2006 National Bank Cup final in Hamilton at Mystery Creek on Friday 30 June. • National Bank Cup Semi Finals Preview Losses Add Extra Edge To
National Bank Cup Semi Finals Preview Losses add extra edge to Sting v Magic clash Qualifying in second spot has given the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic supported by Sleepyhead a new lease of life, coach Noeline Taurua said ahead of Friday’s first National Bank Cup netball semifinal in Invercargill. Buoyed by the prospect of the two-life system for the two top qualifiers, the Magic headed south confident of resurrecting their season and starting with a clean slate against the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Sting in the first of the playoffs. With both teams coming off last round losses, the match is poised to be tight and highlighted by the prospect of some tantalising individual match-ups. Both teams are brimming with talent and have a place in the final at stake. The loser gets a second chance, playing the winner of Sunday’s second semifinal between the Fujifilm Force and the Ballantynes Canterbury Flames on June 23 to find the other finalist. The Magic have struggled to play to their potential this year but Taurua believes she has identified areas that need a slight tweaking as she searches for the elusive formula that will ignite the obvious talent in the team. The Magic have effectively gone into camp for the match, taking three days to get to Invercargill with trainings interspersed at various stopovers on the way. ``We have no fear going down there (Invercargill),’’ Taurua said. ``There’s more positives for us and if anything we play better away from home. At the moment we need team unity and hopefully it will pull us together even tighter.’’ There will be a change of tactics for the match and probably personnel as the Magic look for more control.

COURTSIDE YOUR WEEKLY UPDATE ON NETBALL’S 2006 NATIONAL BANK CUP Round Two - 8 May 2006 Flames and Magic top table after round two of the National Bank Cup Last years’ National Bank Cup champions Waikato/BOP Magic supported by Sleepyhead were on the receiving end of a strong challenge from Genesis Energy Shakers during the first half of Saturday’s round two game. Player of the match Frances Solia led the Shakers to a 15-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. Magic took control in the second half of the match, buoyed by the introduction of Silver Ferns defender Casey Williams, who made a strong return from injury to help Magic win the game with a final score of 62-43. Fujifilm Force dominated during the first half of the game against Ballantynes Canterbury Flames, ahead of the Flames 11-4 after the first quarter. Force extended their lead to 23-11 by the half time break. Flames made a steady comeback in the second half, winning the third quarter 11-7 and restricting Force to four points in the final quarter. • Hertfordshire Mavericks Announce Their NSL Coaching Team for Season 2015-16
Hertfordshire Mavericks Announce their NSL Coaching Team for Season 2015-16 Hertfordshire Mavericks are delighted to announce they have reappointed Sam Bird as the Hertfordshire Mavericks Head Coach and she is to be joined by Mel Mansfield and New Zealander Robyn Broughton as her two assistant coaches for this season’s Superleague campaign. We are delighted that Mel has re-signed her coaching contract following her move to Hertfordshire Mavericks last year from Surrey Storm. As well as being the assistant coach Mel will continue to focus as the specialist shooting coach for the squad this year. Robyn joins this coaching team having been Head Coach for two ANZ teams since 2008 (Southern Steel and Central Pulse). She has also been the Assistant Coach for the New Zealand Silver Ferns and a New Zealand National Selector. Robyn will be working predominantly with the Defending end of the squad. Sam Bird said: “I am really pleased to be reappointed as Head Coach again and be joined by Mel and Robyn. Having spoken with Robyn about the role, I am very excited to welcome her to Hertfordshire Mavericks and to introduce her to our new long squad, coaches, staff and sponsors. We have some great pre- season matches this year against Scotland, Northern Ireland, Surrey Storm, Team Bath and Loughborough Lightning and this will be a chance to work together in a competitive environment before the Superleague starts”. The trio of coaches will also coach the newly formed Mavericks U23 Squad that will compete in a new “bridging” competition against Surrey Storm, Loughborough Lightening, Team Northumbria, Manchester Thunder and Yorkshire Jets over three Saturdays in October and November.

  • Women, Sport and Ethnicity: Exploring Experiences of Difference in Netball
WOMEN, SPORT AND ETHNICITY: EXPLORING EXPERIENCES OF DIFFERENCE IN NETBALL Tracy Lynn Taylor Submitted for the qualification of: Doctor of Philosophy 2000 Acknowledgments I would like to express my appreciation to the following individuals for their guidance, assistance, motivation and perseverance in the completion of this thesis. From the initial selection of the topic, through its various stages of conceptualisation and re conceptualisation through to completion my supervisor, Richard Cashman, has been invaluable. Richard provided direction and feedback that allowed me the opportunity to move at my own pace and in my own way. In particular, his eye for detail was greatly appreciated. I would also like to acknowledge Kristine Toohey’s role in partnering a number of research projects from which the idea for this thesis emerged. Researching cultural diversity presented a huge learning curve for both of us and opened my eyes to a different way of looking at sports organisation and discourse. My appreciation also to Tony Veal and Bob Barney who agreed to read and comment on the final draft and probably didn’t know what they were in for! Many thanks for your insightful comments and generously giving up your leisure time to do so! Finally, my appreciation to Peter McGraw for his proof-reading skills, suggestions on structure and language, and honest appraisal of content. Certificate of Originality I hereby declare that this submission is my own work and to the best of my knowledge it contains no materials previously published or written by another person, nor material to a substantial extent has been accepted for the award of any other degree or diploma at UNSW or any other educational institution except where due acknowledgement is made in the thesis.
