Photo supplied.

Are you the Waipa’s champion couch potato? If so, you’ve now got the chance to prove it. Entries are now open for The Selectrix Classic Hits Couch Potato Competition, which starts on June 30. Contestants will be set up on a lounge in the windows of both the Te Awamutu and Cambridge Selectrix stores, with the simple task of staying awake for as long as possible. The contestants will have a television to watch and regular but short breaks, with food supplied by local eateries, but outside these times they must remain seated. However, if they fall asleep, they will - in the best traditions of reality TV - be eliminated from the competition. The fi nal person awake between the two stores will be declared the winner. While there will be regular pee breaks, it won’t be for the methamphetamine variety, with artifi - cial stimulants off limits. Store owner Joe Scaramuzza said the competi- tion had been done in New Zealand before, but certainly nothing like it in Te Awamutu, as far he was aware. While the previous competition had seen contestants battle on with drooping eyes for about three-and-a half days, he expected four days would be the limit for anyone’s powers of endurance - no matter how much they wanted a new TV. Entry forms are available from Selectrix stores in both Cambridge (Duke Street) and Te Awamutu (Alexandra Street), with entry restrict- ed to residents of either town. There’s room on the couch in Cambridge for about 10 people, while the Te Awamutu window can hold about six. Contestants will be selected in conjunction with Classic Hits. The prize pool so far is yet to be confi rmed but is hoped to top $10,000 and will include a $2000 bed package, and $3000 television. The competition starts on Thursday June 30, with live radio crosses to the contestants and plenty of other activities in the two stores. Magic aim to repeat ‘trick’ From page 3.
