Courtside Round Seven Review COURTSIDE YOUR WEEKLY UPDATE ON NETBALL’S THE NATIONAL BANK CUP Round Seven Review - 5 June 2007 Sting and Magic to host Semi Finals The top four teams have been found following the end of the Round Robin for The National Bank Cup. Ascot Park Hotel Southern Sting beat a determined Goldair Flames side 54-46 to take top place and earn home advantage in Semi Final A this Friday night. The Sting will play Fujifilm Force, who won against Genesis Energy Shakers 53-49 on Sunday. The winning side from Semi Final A will progress straight through to the Final on 22 June, while the losing team will have a second chance to make the final playing the winner from Semi Final B on Sunday (Waikato/BOP Magic v The Trusts Diamonds) in Rotorua. Then came February and Christchurch was devastated with another earthquake that took a horrendous toll on human life, with people badly injured and many homes and building destroyed. The aftermath of this calamity continues to dominate our country’s news and its effects still reverberate around New Zealand. Just recently, too, our clean green image took a battering when a foreign vessel, Rena, was shipwrecked on a reef outside Tauranga, spewing tonnes of oil on to pristine beaches. There is much to be proud of and much work still to be done, which is the nature of our establishment phase. Firstly, there are many to thank and acknowledge for the progress that has been made. None of this would have been possible without the dedication and ongoing support of our staff, centres, sponsors, funding partners, Netball NZ, TTNL and the wider netball community, whether they be players, coaches, umpires, officials or administrators. Ultimately we are all in this together for the benefit and future growth of netball at all levels of the game. On behalf of the NCZ board, we cannot thank you enough for your ongoing contribution. The Haier Pulse enjoyed its most successful year to date in 2013, with some fantastic results on the court in front of packed crowds at our home games. I would like to acknowledge the contribution of our coach Robyn Broughton and her management team to the team’s continued development, along with the players led by their inspirational captain Katrina Grant. Establishing the NCZ board and management team, implementing key recommendations of the Zone working party and setting and implementing a clear strategic direction for the Zone have been a major focus of the Board, as has been finding the right staff, coaches, players and funds to ensure its sustainability.

    COURTSIDE YOUR WEEKLY UPDATE ON NETBALL’S 2006 NATIONAL BANK CUP Semi Finals A & B Review – 19 June 2006 Magic though to final, Sting get second chance in Major Semi Final Waikato/BOP Magic supported by Sleepyhead regained their top form in their semi final match against Ascot Park Hotel Southern Sting on Friday, booking Magic a home final. Magic’s Irene van Dyk outplayed the Sting defenders to record 43 goals from 44 attempts (98%), while Tanya Lund shot at 78% (25/32). Sting coach Robyn Broughton made the most of her attacking depth rotating Tanya Dalton, Belinda Colling and Natalie Avellino in the shooting circle, finally having all three on court with Avellino donning the Wing Attack bib, but Magic’s Casey Williams (player off the match) limited the Sting’s ability to convert the their attacking ball to goals. Fujifilm Force hosted Ballantynes Canterbury Flames on Sunday in a hotly contested semi final at North Shore Events Centre. Although the Flames led the game 10-8 at the end of the first quarter, Force turned the game around in the second quarter, and led for the remainder of the game winning 42-39, with captain Temepara George winning player of the match. The winning Force have now earned a place in the major semi final against the Sting on Friday 23 June, with the winner facing the Magic in the 2006 National Bank Cup final in Hamilton at Mystery Creek on Friday 30 June.     National Bank Cup Semi Finals Preview Losses add extra edge to Sting v Magic clash Qualifying in second spot has given the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic supported by Sleepyhead a new lease of life, coach Noeline Taurua said ahead of Friday’s first National Bank Cup netball semifinal in Invercargill. Buoyed by the prospect of the two-life system for the two top qualifiers, the Magic headed south confident of resurrecting their season and starting with a clean slate against the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Sting in the first of the playoffs. With both teams coming off last round losses, the match is poised to be tight and highlighted by the prospect of some tantalising individual match-ups. Both teams are brimming with talent and have a place in the final at stake. The loser gets a second chance, playing the winner of Sunday’s second semifinal between the Fujifilm Force and the Ballantynes Canterbury Flames on June 23 to find the other finalist. The Magic have struggled to play to their potential this year but Taurua believes she has identified areas that need a slight tweaking as she searches for the elusive formula that will ignite the obvious talent in the team. The Magic have effectively gone into camp for the match, taking three days to get to Invercargill with trainings interspersed at various stopovers on the way. ``We have no fear going down there (Invercargill),’’ Taurua said. ``There’s more positives for us and if anything we play better away from home. At the moment we need team unity and hopefully it will pull us together even tighter.’’ There will be a change of tactics for the match and probably personnel as the Magic look for more control.
