Unlike others in this series, this working paper is unique in the sense that it emerges from a research project commissioned by ippr and therefore contains new evidence and information which has not previously been available. Although there is heightened interest amongst policy makers and the public about minority integration, social cohesion and identity, the voices of migrants themselves are often missing from discussion and analysis. By contrast this paper provides a contemporary ‘snapshot’ of what migrants themselves think about these issues. We believe that the result is an important contribution to the literature on the experiences of migrants in the UK. It makes no pretence of dealing with all of the complex and sometimes contradictory issues surrounding minority identities in the UK, but the evidence, its analysis and the policy prescriptions arising from that analysis are firmly rooted in local experience and may have broader relevance and appeal. Notions about identity continue to be central to discussions of migration, race and ethnic relations in the UK and elsewhere. This working paper highlights the importance of understanding the complexity and nuances of ‘Britishness’ in one particular context. The result is reassuring in many ways – most of the British Asians interviewed seem to feel ‘British’ – but is also a reminder of the work that needs to be done to integrate migrant and minority communities. The working paper also points to the importance of local characteristics. Not only do interviewees identify the importance of local issues but differences between Tameside and neighbouring Oldham, site of rioting in 2001, seem to reinforce that importance. In Tameside, strong political leadership, relatively low rates of unemployment, less residential segregation and a more responsible press all seem to make for a more cohesive community. Like the authors, we hope to use this Working Paper as a first step in a broader research agenda that delves deeper into issues surrounding the integration and identity of ethnic minorities in the UK. The Working Paper brings to mind questions that seem deserving of further exploration: how much are the views of Tameside’s Asians reflective of the whole British Asian population? do younger generations and newer arrivals conceive of identity differently? what are the implications of this research for promoting social cohesion? We approached the subject from somewhat different perspectives, one of us working in a university History department, the other in a local authority’s equality and diversity unit. However, we shared the same conviction that, if the life stories of first generation Asian migrants in Lancashire and Yorkshire1 were not soon recorded, the opportunity may be lost forever. Our project has since developed in several unanticipated directions. We hope, however, not to have lost sight of our original goals, namely to explain why Asian migrants came to Britain, what life has been like for them since they arrived, and how far they now feel that they belong here. In gathering our data and writing this report we have incurred many debts. Particular thanks go to the local authority co-workers who were the lynchpin of the project: Jayshree Chauhan, Hansa Mistry and Nila Mistry from the Indian community in Ashton; Shamin Akhtar, Nazia Akram and Iqbal Atchig from the Pakistani community in Ashton; and Abdul Hannan from the Bangladeshi community in Hyde. Their patience and good humour helped the project run smoothly and to schedule. Nor could we have managed without Reba Begum, who volunteered for too many tasks to mention and kept smiling throughout three days of intensive interviewing. Venues for the interviews were offered by the Indian Community Centre and Age Concern in Ashton and Hyde Town Hall: we were fortunate to have access to each. It draws upon in-depth qualitative research in which women provided testimony about their dress biographies, wardrobe collections and aesthetic agency. The aim is to complement, and advance, past research that considered the production and marketing of ‘South Asian’ fashions and textiles in Britain (e.g. Bhachu 2003, Dwyer & Jackson 2003) through a more sustained analysis of the consumption and use of styles and materials. The research is situated in relation to both specific bodies of scholarship – such as that on contemporary British Asian fashion cultures – and wider currents of thought – in particular on diasporic geographies and geographies of fashion. The approach taken draws especially from work within fashion studies that has sought to recognise lived experiences of dress. The thesis develops its argument through four complementary perspectives on the testimonies constructed in the empirical research. First, it considers the role of dress in inhabiting what is termed ‘British Asian fashion space’ and ideas of British Asian identity. Second, it then examines how dress functions as a technology of diasporic selfhood, focusing on the practice of dress choices both in everyday life and in significant ceremonies such as weddings.

    View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Leeds Beckett Repository “Who do ‘they’ cheer for?” Cricket, diaspora, hybridity and divided loyalties amongst British Asians Dr Thomas Fletcher Carnegie Faculty for Sport Leisure and Education Leeds Metropolitan University [email protected] This article explores the relationship between British Asians’ sense of nationhood, citizenship, ethnicity and some of their manifestations in relation to sports fandom: specifically in terms of how cricket is used as a means of articulating diasporic British Asian identities. I place Norman Tebbit’s ‘cricket test’ at the forefront of this article to tease out the complexities of being British Asian in terms of supporting the English national cricket team. The first part of the article locates Tebbit’s ‘cricket test’ within the wider discourse of multiculturalism. The analysis then moves to focus on the discourse of sports fandom and the concept of ‘home team advantage’. I argue that sports venues represent significant sites for nationalist and cultural expression due to their connection with national history. I highlight how supporting ‘Anyone but England’, thereby rejecting ethnically exclusive notions of ‘Englishness’ and ‘Britishness’, continues to be a definer of British Asians’ cultural identities. The final section situates these trends within the discourse of hybridity and argues that sporting allegiances are often separate from considerations of national identity and citizenship. Rather than placing British Asians in an either/or situation, viewing British ‘Asianness’ in hybrid terms enables them to celebrate their traditions and histories, whilst also being proud of their British citizenship.

    Journal of History for the Public, Vol. 4, 2007, pp. 77-94 Ethnic Minorities in Britain: The Educational Performance of Pakistani Muslims Manami Hamashita The irrevocable changes that have formed the multi-racial and multicultural British society have their origins in the period of British imperialism. In the postwar period migrants from countries in the New Commonwealth were able to migrate to Britain without any restrictions in accordance with the British Nationality Act of 1948. The influx of migrants from these countries including the West Indies, India and Pakistan bringing with them their culture and customs had a profound effect, and British society was forced to change rapidly as a result. In general, ethnic minority issues are often considered as a matter of ‘assimilation’ into the host society or under the concept of ‘multiculturalism’. In either case education for ethnic minorities plays an important role. For this reason I would like to focus on the educational performance of ethnic minorities, in particular the performance of those of Pakistani origin. According to the 2001 Census, groups of Pakistani origin had the highest percentage of British- (1) born (54.8%), and so the education of this British-born contingent should be one of the most important issues for Pakistanis in Britain. Much has been written about the education issues of ethnic minorities but there is relatively little material concerning the education of Pakistanis. This subject has been given some attention by Muhammad Anwar, who is a leading researcher in (2) the field of Pakistani Muslims. In his book The Myth of Return, published in 1979, he provided evidence that Muslims had started to settle down in Britain in the 1970s, and that a short stay for purely financial reasons was already a ‘myth’.

Abstract Employing the concepts of lifeworld (Lebenswelt) and system as primarily discussed by Edmund Husserl and Jürgen Habermas, this dissertation argues that the lifeworlds of Anglo- Indian and Goan Catholics in the Greater Toronto Area have permitted members of these communities to relatively easily understand, interact with and manoeuvre through Canada’s democratic, individualistic and market-driven system. Suggesting that the Catholic faith serves as a multi-dimensional primary lens for Canadian Goan and Anglo-Indians, this sociological ethnography explores how religion has and continues affect their identity as diasporic post- colonial communities. Modifying key elements of traditional Indian culture to reflect their Catholic beliefs, these migrants consider their faith to be the very backdrop upon which their life experiences render meaningful. Through systematic qualitative case studies, I uncover how these individuals have successfully maintained a sense of security and ethnic pride amidst the myriad cultures and religions found in Canada’s multicultural society. Oscillating between the fuzzy boundaries of the Indian traditional and North American liberal worlds, Anglo-Indians and Goans attribute their achievements to their open-minded Westernized upbringing, their traditional Indian roots and their Catholic-centred principles effectively making them, in their opinions, admirable models of accommodation to Canada’s system.

The ageing of this South Asian population will be rapid over the next decade. The research project Families and Migration: Older People from South Asia, was developed to examine the effect of migration on people as they age in both the United Kingdom and in sending communities in South Asia. In particular, we were interested in the effects of migration on the availability of support for older people. This is a regional report on the findings for older Gujaratis in the United Kingdom.

University faculty of Science Field of study: Genetics University College University of London. 2 ABSTRACT This thesis is about the experience of Muslim British Pakistani families coping with thalassaemia (a chronic, inherited blood disorder) and the implications for service delivery. Its central concern is to illustrate that simplistic and culturally-biased assumptions are an unsatisfactory base on which to devise health service delivery for minority populations, and that with careful study it is possible to deliver culturally sensitive and appropriate services. The thesis is written in four parts. The first part contains the research methods and the clinical aspects of thalassaemia. It also provides an introduction to the families in the study. The British Pakistani population is considered in the context of migration to Britain, which has created a plural society requiring adaptations to services to meet the diverse health needs of the different ethnic minorities. The second part deals with the socio-economic and cultural background of British Pakistanis in Pakistan: this crucial to an understanding of their present situation. Family dynamics, marriage patterns and decision-making processes are explored, as is the central role of religion and kinship networks in the lives of British Pakistanis. It also examines their settlement process and present living conditions and illustrates how the social structures prevalent in Pakistan 3 have been re-established in England, albeit in a modified form.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract This study demonstrates how Indians with French citizenship were able through their stay in Indochina to have some say in shaping their position within the French colonial empire, and how in turn they made then' mark on Indochina itself. Known as ‘renouncers’, they gained their citizenship by renoimcing their personal laws in order to to be judged by the French civil code. Mainly residing in Cochinchina, they served primarily as functionaries in the French colonial administration, and spent the early decades of their stay battling to secure recognition of their electoral and civil rights in the colony. Their presence in Indochina in turn had an important influence on the ways in which the peoples of Indochina experienced and assessed French colonialism.
