Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. For further information, see the references on the last page. The 5th Annual Colorado Rare Plant Symposium: G2 Plants of Colorado September 5, 2008 8 am - 4 pm Holiday Inn Express Montrose, Colorado Meeting Minutes Sponsors: CoNPS, FWS, CU Herbarium, CNHP, USFS Recorders: Betsy Neely, Peggy Lyon, Jill Handwerk Introduction and ground rules: Steve Popovich, USFS Thanks to USFS, CNHP, CONPS, USFWS, and University of Colorado Herbarium for supporting this symposium with time and funding. The first symposium was held in Steamboat Springs in 2004, and covered all of Colorado’s threatened, endangered, candidate, and petitioned plant species. The second symposium, held in Pagosa Springs in 2005, covered the globally critically imperiled (G1) plant species of Colorado that are not federally listed species. The third symposium was held in Colorado Springs and covered imperiled (G2) plants species of southeastern Colorado. The fourth symposium was held in Boulder and covered the imperiled and vulnerable (G2 and G3) species known from the northeast quadrant of Colorado. This year we will review imperiled (G2) species known from the southwest quadrant of Colorado. In addition, G2 plants from northern and central Colorado were introduced. This year, the symposium is focused on G1 plants of Colorado. Current conservation status and needs of the G1 species will be covered. At the end of the symposium, there will be a review of species from previous years. The Museum of Southwestern Biology performs and supports scientific research and is a nucleus for new and integrative research and education opportunities at UNM. It is important to recognize, however, that curators and staff are obliged to serve as stewards for extensive natural history collections and all the materials entailed therein, including (but not limited to) animal and plant specimens, field notes, other archival materials, and electronic archives and inventories. Our curators and staff routinely obtain research funding for special projects, but it is nearly impossible to generate sustained extramural funding for maintenance and preservation of a natural history collection. -

Abstract This checklist has 785 species and 801 taxa (for taxa, the varieties and subspecies are included in the count) in 90 plant families. The most common plant families are the grasses (Poaceae) and the sunflower family (Asteraceae). Of this total, 513 taxa are definitely known to occur on the Comanche National Grassland. The remaining 288 taxa occur in nearby areas of southeastern Colorado and may be discovered on the Comanche National Grassland. The Author Dr. Donald L. Hazlett has worked as an ecologist, botanist, ethnobotanist, and teacher in Latin America and in Colorado. He has specialized in the flora of the eastern plains since 1985. His many years in Latin America prompted him to include Spanish common names in this report, names that are seldom reported in floristic pub- lications. He is also compiling plant folklore stories for Great Plains plants. Since Don is a native of Otero county, this project was of special interest. DESERT PLANTS OF UTAH Original booklet and drawings by Berniece A. Andersen Revised May 1996 HG 505 FOREWORD The original Desert Plants of Utah by Berniece A. Andersen has been a remarkably popular book, serving as a tribute to both her botanical knowledge of the region and to her enthusiastic manner. For these reasons, we have tried to retain as much of the original work, in both content and style, as possible. Some modifications were necessary. We have updated scientific names in accordance with changes that have occurred since the time of the first publication and we have also incorporated new geographic distributional data that have accrued with additional years of botanical exploration. The most obvious difference pertains to the organization of species. In the original version, species were organized phylogenetically, reflecting the predominant concepts of evolutionary relationships among plant families at that time. In an effort to make this version more user-friendly for the beginner, we have chosen to arrange the plants primarily by flower color. We hope that these changes will not diminish the enjoyment gained by anyone familiar with the original. We would also like to thank Larry A.
