PRESS INFO – WINTER 2020/21 Freedom on the Kitzsteinhorn at 3000 meters Winter sports fans & excursion guests are treated to extraordinary nature and extraordinarily enjoyable sporting experiences on the Kitzsteinhorn in the Zell am See-Kaprun Region. On the edge of Hohe Tauern National Park, Salzburg’s only glacier ski area is a unique location in the Eastern Alps. In addition to virtually endless opportunities for winter sports, the glacier – including TOP OF SALZBURG/Gipfelwelt 3000 – is home to a high-alpine excursion destination that is open year-round. The K-ONNECTION provides a direct link from the town center of Kaprun and the Maiskogel Family Ski Area to the Kitzsteinhorn, for ultimate Ski-in Ski-out convenience to and from the glacier and never-before-seen perspectives of the surrounding mountain world. K-onnected: Kaprun – Maiskogel – Kitzsteinhorn The K-ONNECTION lift link unites the town center of Kaprun and the popular Maiskogel Family Ski Area with the Kitzsteinhorn. For winter sports fans and excursion guests, this means significantly shorter distances, Ski-in Ski- out between Kaprun and the glacier, and the total convenience of the Kaprun Center with valley station, ticket windows, ski depot and a sports shop. Each section of this ultra-modern cableway reveals unique perspectives and fascinating insights into the pristine, high-alpine winter landscapes. Traveling a total distance of twelve kilometers from the valley station up to TOP OF SALZBURG at 3029 m, you will rise a total of 2261 vertical meters and traverse four different climate zones. For winter sports lovers staying in Kaprun, this represents a convenient alternative rather than having to ride up from the Kaprun valley head. The heart of the K-ONNECTION is the 4.3 km-long 3K K-onnection. This, the most modern lift in the world, links the mountain station of the MK Maiskogelbahn (elev. 1570 m) with the Langwied mid-station (1976 m) on the Kitzsteinhorn. Pure winter sports enjoyment Skiing on the Kitzsteinhorn is a special experience: Both the high elevation as well as the proximity to Hohe Tauern National Park make a day of winter sports on the Kitzsteinhorn one-of-a-kind. The daily routine becomes a distant memory, while the heavens are close enough to touch: The snow-covered peaks and fascinating natural scenery cause you to pause from time to time in veneration. Anyone who has ever stood on the Kitzsteinhorn knows the sense of exhilaration that comes from gazing out on those mighty 3000-meter summits. Until early summer, guests of Salzburg’s only glacier ski area are able to indulge themselves in the full spectrum of winter sports. The broad pistes, state-of-the-art lifts, inviting restaurants and absolute snow-certainty guarantee astonishing variety to fans of winter sports. On- and off-piste: the Kitzsteinhorn for freeriders and ski tourers Thanks to its snowy high elevations, the Kitzsteinhorn is famous for its deep-snow slopes. Freeriders appreciate the five marked routes, the “Freeride Info Base” and the “Info Points” at the entrance to each of the hills, providing important safety tips for everyone venturing out into open terrain. Workshops for beginners and experienced riders are offered in cooperation with two ski schools under the umbrella of “Freeride Monday”. For ski tourers, the Kitzsteinhorn features two marked ascents from Langwied alongside the piste: the “Schneekönigin” variant climbs 474 vertical meters, the goal being the Alpincenter at 2450 meters above sea level. The “Eisbrecher” route, with an 899-meter gain, leads to the mountain station of the Maurerlift at 2875 meters. Guided ski tours are offered every Thursday: Together with the guide, you will make your way to the top of the pristine, 2642 meters-high Tristkogel. The first to open its doors on the glacier is the aptly named “Glacier Park” in October. As of December, the “Easy Park” welcomes all snowboarders and freeskiers eager to take on their first elements. In January, “Central Park” provides yet another winter playground to show off your stuff. The “Maisi Park” features a special fun area and elements that are easy to master – even for the youngest kids. Part of Ski ALPIN CARD The Kitzsteinhorn is part of the ALPIN CARD ticket alliance, which unites three premium ski regions: Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, the Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See as well as Kitzsteinhorn Kaprun. With a single ticket, winter sports fans have access to 408 piste kilometers and 121 different lifts, glacier included. These three top ski resorts boast the widest range of opportunities you can imagine, including theme pistes, ski routes, kids’ zones, snow parks, along with a tempting selection of huts and mountain restaurants. Three interconnected igloos – each twelve meters in diameter – are designed by Carinthian artist Max Seiwald. Around 60 tons of ice and 2500 cubic meters of snow go into this work of art. Construction of this unique world of snow and ice begins in December, while ICE CAMP opens in mid-January. Ingeniously combining a relaxed atmosphere, music and art, an immensely popular gathering spot for winter sports fans and excursioners. Special challenges for winter athletes One genuine challenge of the ski area is the “Black Mamba” piste with gradients as much as 63%. If you like to collect data, Skiline allows you to tally your stats, while the Skimovie hill with giant slalom course on the glacier will allow you to indelibly immortalize your skiing prowess. There are two Skiline speed checks, one on the Kitzsteinhorn and a second on the Maiskogel. And this winter, yet again, you can participate in the Kitzsteinhorn K-ONNECTION CUP involving five Skiline.cc disciplines: Complete four of the five for a chance to win exclusive prizes.
