From 2000 through 2005, the Chinese women earned seven medals (gold medals in Bali and Milan) by Tian and Fei Wang. Since the start of the 2006 season, the Chinese women have captured 35 medals led by Tian and Jie Wang (19) and Chen Xue and Xi Zhang (10). With the women’s FIVB Beach Volleyball competition beginning in 1992, the Chinese drought for a men’s medal was even longer since the start of the international events in 1987. The Chinese men had never placed higher than 12th in a SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event (1990 by Cheng Lu and Meng Qi in Enoshima, Japan) until Penggen Wu and Linyin Xu posted a ninth in the 2006 season opening event in Shanghai event. Later in the 2006 season, Wu and Xu gained China's first-ever men's medal in Poland by defeating Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes of Brazil (FIVB Men's event No. 189 of the 208 played to date). Wu and Xu added a second medal in 2007 after losing a 72-minute three-setter of Marcio Araujo and Fabio in the semi-finals as the Chinese upset Russia’s Dmitri Barsouk and Igor Kolodinsky for the bronze medal at the Norwegian Grand Slam in Stavanger. At the 2008 FIVB season opener in Adelaide, Australia, Wu and Xu became the first Chinese men’s team to compete in a SWATCH gold medal match. While Brazilians have dominated the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour with 573 “major” medals, including two Olympic and seven world championship titles, the Chinese rank fifth in combined men’s and women’s podium placements (41 medals, three for men and 38 for women). The United States (256), Switzerland (46) and Australia (43) also rank ahead of the Chinese in SWATCH podiums followed closely by Germany (40).

· CHINESE MEN - Wu and Xu, the most-successful Chinese team on the men’s SWATCH-FIVB World Tour since the formation of their partnership at the end of the 2005 season, appear headed to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games along with Jian Li and Shun Zhou. Wu and Xu are currently ranked fifth with 3,780 points for their best eight SWATCH participations since May 2007 while Li and Zhou are 18th. Wu and Xu have competed in 29 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event together with four “final four” finishes together to rank 35th on the all-time FIVB earnings list with $252,550 and a 90-56 match mark. For their FIVB careers, Wu has competed in 38 SWATCH stops with $128,775 in earnings to rank 82nd while Xu has 46 FIVB participations with $138,650 in winnings to rank 71st all-time. Xu and Russia’s Dmitri Barsouk were voted as the FIVB’s most improved players for the 2007 season. Li and Zhou, fifth-place finishers at the 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Championships in Switzerland for their best SWATCH effort, have competed in 24 FIVB events together with $68,500 in earnings and a 32-42 match mark. Wu and Xu also placed fifth at the 2007 worlds in Gstaad.

· CHINESE WOMEN - The 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour campaign was the best-ever for the Chinese women as the Asian country placed three teams among the top 15 on the international ranking list, including led by the tandems of Jia Tian/Jie Wang, Chen Xue/Xi Zhang and Lu Wang/Man Zou.. Also Tian/Jie Wang (5,200 points for their best eight SWATCH finishes since May 2007) and Xue/Zhang (4,260) rank third and fourth, respectively, on the qualifying list for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Five of China’s seven SWATCH gold medals have been won by the two teams - Tian/Wang (three) and Xue/Zhang (two). The Chinese pairs have captured the past two Shanghai women’s even with Xue and Zhang the 2006 winners when the tandem became the youngest team ever to win an international Beach Volleyball team (combined age of 38 years, four months, 19 days). Xue, the 2006 women’s FIVB rookie-of-the-year, also became the youngest player ever to capture a SWATCH medal at the 2006 Shanghai stop (17 years, three months, 10 days). Tian and Jie Wang have competed in 30 FIVB events since the start of their partnership in 2006 with 20 podium placements (a 2007 Satellite gold medal in Hong Kong), 21 “final fours”, a 140-42 match mark and $552,700 in earnings to rank sixth on the all-time list. Xue and Zhang also started their partnership in 2006 with 30 FIVB participations enroute to 11 podium placements, 14 “final fours”, a 126-53 match mark and $425,000 in earnings to rank 10th on the all-time list. Prior to 2006, Tian and Fei Wang, bronze medalists at the 2005 SWATCH-FIVB World Championships in Berlin and ninth-place finishers at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, were China’s top ranked team with seven podium placements, 10 “final fours”, a147- 89 match mark and $403,750in earnings to rank 12th on the all-time list. Wang and Zou, who are 1,660 points behind Xue and Zhang on the Olympic qualifying list, have competed in 16 SWATCH stops together with a 39-30 match mark and $90,800 in earnings. The volleyball ground contains 17,000 tons of fine sand imported from Hainan. Construction for the facility was started December 28, 2005 and was completed for an “Olympic” test event for women in August 2007. Practicing the concept of "Green Olympics," the beach volleyball event organizers had the previously existing workshops and industrial storerooms on the grounds converted into office space rather than having new offices built. A "sun- chasing" solar power generation system installed at the Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground will be the first such power generation system used at an Olympic venue. The sun-chasing mechanism controls a rotating battery that switches according to where the sun shines, thereby maximizing the amount of solar power collected. The completely automatic 11-kW sun-chasing solar power generation system measures 11 m high x 7 m wide, and the battery is capable of rotating 270 degrees. The system can generate 30% more power than the average solar power generation system. With a lifespan of more than 25 years, the system can generate 72,000 kWh per year, with an average of 200 kWh per day. Moreover, it is environmental-friendly. As a solar energy power generation system, it produces 23.4 tons less carbon dioxide and 1.5 tons less sulfur dioxide emissions than regular generators. · A $50,000 FIVB Challenger stop at the Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground was held in 2007 (August 13-19) to serve as a “test” event for next August’s Summer Games in the Chinese capital. · Twenty-four women's teams competed in the fifth of six Challenge/Satellite events on the 2007 FIVB calendar following the same Olympic format for the Olympic Beach Volleyball competition to be held August 9-22, 2008.
