From Conformity to Protest: The Evolution of Latinos in American Popular Culture, 1930s-1980s A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in the partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of History of the College of Arts and Sciences 2017 by Vanessa de los Reyes M.A., Miami University, 2008 B.A., Northern Kentucky University, 2006 Committee Chair: Stephen R. Porter, Ph.D. Abstract “From Conformity to Protest” examines the visual representations of Latinos in American popular culture—specifically in film, television, and advertising—from the 1930s through the early 1980s. It follows the changing portrayals of Latinos in popular culture and how they reflected the larger societal phenomena of conformity, the battle for civil rights and inclusion, and the debate over identity politics and cultural authenticity. It also explores how these images affected Latinos’ sense of identity, particularly racial and ethnic identities, and their sense of belonging in American society. This dissertation traces the evolution of Latinos in popular culture through the various cultural anxieties in the United States in the middle half of the twentieth century, including immigration, citizenship, and civil rights. Those tensions profoundly transformed the politics and social dynamics of American society and affected how Americans thought of and reacted to Latinos and how Latinos thought of themselves. This work begins in the 1930s when Latin Americans largely accepted portrayals of themselves as cultural stereotypes, but longed for inclusion as “white” Americans. The narrative of conformity continues through the 1950s as the middle chapters thematically and chronologically examine how mainstream cultural producers portrayed different Latino groups—including Chicanos (or Mexican Americans), Puerto Ricans, and Cubans. -

Fox. The shows they wrote for included “The Honeymooners,” ‘The Phil Silvers Show,” “The Red Skelton Hour,” Bob Hope specials, “Here’s Lucy,” “All in the Family,” and “Maude.” These five writers were working in the earliest days of the medium and spent years writing for the personalities—from performers to producers—who pioneered and defined it. In the History of American Primetime Television, Very Few Programs, If Any
“T HOSE WERE THE DAYS …”: ALL IN THE FAMILY AND THE ‘P RIMETIMING ’ OF U.S. DIVERSITY AND COUNTERCULTURE Dennis TREDY Université Paris III – Sorbonne Nouvelle In the history of American primetime television, very few programs, if any, have had as startling and as permanent effect on the television landscape or have broken as many barriers as Norman Lear’s All in the Family . The program, along with the spin-offs and lookalikes spurred by it throughout the early 1970’s, brought long overdue change to the American identity that network television chose to reflect, finally bringing civil strife and intergenerational conflicts regarding race, equal rights for women and minorities, anti-war sentiment and youth culture into America’s living rooms and thereby into the forefront of public discourse. Lear’s go-for-the-jugular approach to dealing with the most divisive and politically incorrect social issues is indeed legendary, as he cleverly used the Trojan horse of laughter to deliver hard truths, and as he understood that America’s deep-seated problems had to be dealt with head-on if they were ever to be overcome—so as to root out the evil, as it were, so that the country could heal. In order to appreciate the true impact that this ground-breaking CBS sitcom had on the television landscape, it is essential to first understand just how “out of touch” the television landscape of the late 1960’s was, the laughably meager steps that had been taken to touch on themes of diversity and counterculture, and the confluence of circumstances that made such a radical change even imaginable, let alone possible. -

This study represents a new examination of modern television and explores why and how stereotypes are perpetuated and challenged on Latino-oriented shows. The paper also critiques, reviews and describes prominent Latino figures throughout the past century on American television and film and examines how they’re represented. Comparable studies were analyzed to provide further insight in the coverage and portrayal of Latinos in American television. -

1 LATINA/OS ON TV! A Proud (and Ongoing) Struggle Over Representation and Authorship Mary Beltrán Of the myriad realms of U.S. popular culture in which Latina/o images and narratives circulate and Latina/os themselves serve as storytellers and creative practitioners, arguably none has had as profound an impact as television. As an entertainment medium that people watch daily in their own homes, television has played an instrumental role over the decades. In the case of English-language television, it has showcased, reinforced, and occasionally challenged popular notions regarding Latina/os and their place in the nation and national history. In addition, Spanish-language television has played an influential role in the lives of many Latina/os; as a diasporic medium, it has long contributed to the Latina/o imaginary, or Latina/os’ understandingRoutledge of the imagined Latina/o 2017 community, regarding discourses of race, gender, class, nationality, citizenship, and global politics. More recently, bilingual television has also found a small niche, catering to younger, acculturated Latina/os interested in media that connects with their culturallyNot hybrid for identities Distribution and lives. With regard to Latina/os and these three realms of television, English-language programming arguably has had a particularly substantial impact on U.S. popular culture, given the size of its audience and the way that these television story worlds come to stand in for idealized North American ideals. As my own area of expertise, both as a researcher and as a Latina who grew up “Spanish-impaired” because of lack of exposure, it will be the main focus of this chapter.1 Latina/os unfortunately have been marginalized in English-language television story worlds, to a degree that’s only beginning to be countered. -
