My trips have usually been long; and I have spent the best part of my time in the archives. One of the most extraordinary aspects of this experience has been what I encountered when I would emerge from the archives: the world around me was changing at an unbelievable rate. In my work as an historian of the Soviet Union, I could hardly avoid taking into account what I was seeing and thinking as I walked through the streets, first in Soviet, then in post-Soviet Moscow, Tashkent, Almaty or other cities. I looked at the world through the eyes of an historian; but I needed other tools to interpret what was happening around me. As a result, I became interested in urban history and began to read the works of anthropologists, sociologists, town planners, and geographers. I found another clue pointing in the same direction in the very city where I live in Italy, and the same can be said for the cities where most of you live, too: the immigrants from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, whom we meet in ever greater numbers, tell us of the transformations taking place in their cities of origin. They contribute to these transformations through their absence, through the remittances they send, and their influence on relatives and friends who have not migrated, as well as through their re- turn visits. This volume reflects these two perspectives and contains studies with different disciplinary approaches, investigating changes that have come about in the last twenty years in some cities of the East. In the same years, independently of what was happening in the East, migratory flows have become more consistent all over the world, cultural contacts and the circulation of information more intense. There are cities where the population has increased and become more complex in its cul- 8 Changing Urban Landscapes ture, others where the population has diminished through emigration. The specificity of these countries is due to their having had communist regimes for decades and having been dragged down by their collapse, a collapse that plunged many cities in the East into deep crisis and induced many of the inhabitants to emigrate, while other cities successfully entered global networks. The opening up of frontiers and the change-over to market econ- omies effectively brought these countries and their cities very abruptly into the world of globalisation.1 Today many of these cities boast a modernity signalled by member- ship in international business networks, and they underscore this belonging by adapting their image. In the first years after the collapse of the commu- nist regimes, the urban landscapes began to change following the build- ing of skyscrapers by banks and multinational companies, later becoming increasingly vertical. Even the cities on the margins of development were not unaffected by this craze for modernity: the “European style” spread everywhere, indicating a will to conform to standards and canons of taste that identified with those of Western Europe. This “European style” af- fects, above all, the houses of families whose relatives are working abroad. Around the world people have come under the spell of an imaginary West, which informs the changes in their cities. This might be defined as “occi- dentalism,” implying something like “orientalism,” but in reverse. In their physical structure, cities tend to resist this urge to remodel: it is difficult to demolish or completely alter buildings, squares, and monuments. As a new rhetoric, post-Soviet modernity triumphs when the political forces have the strength to be ag- gressive and where there are areas that are free from signs of the past. In the East, one example of this is Astana, the new capital of Kazakhstan, built in recent years practically from scratch. Here the “Western” model is Dubai or Shanghai, and architects have come from all over the world, fascinated by the freedom made possible by the absence of the past. The model that appeals to these cities is, in reality, an abstract reference that has by now taken root all over the world, independently of Europe. In new cities like Astana, the buildings not only lead towards a science- fiction concept of the future, but also tell their own version of the past. If you take the time to glance through the photographs of Astana, you will find in the designs of the buildings, their decorations, colours, and imagery, continuous references to traditions that lend themselves to the composition of a national style.2 Here even the invention of the past has no limits, since there has never been a significant urban past for the Kazak people, who were semi-nomadic until forced to settle in the 1930s. By contrast, in other cities the constraints to rewriting the past are significant, though the politi- cal and cultural operation is similar. During the years of the communist regimes, the population of Eastern cities was affected by systematic policies of integration and assimilation aimed at erasing previous cultural heritage and national specificities. These cities were the object of broad nationalisation of land and properties, state planning, and the symbolic construction of the urban landscape promoting communist political power. After the collapse of these regimes, the birth of new states entailed the transformation of the meaning of belonging to a specific national, ethnic and religious group, and the redefinition of citizen- ship rights through policies of inclusion and exclusion. Among other con- sequences, the demise of the state-controlled economy brought about the privatisation of real estate. The legal recognition, application, and enforce- ment of property rights were indispensable conditions for the development of the market, the birth of enterprise, and the arrival of foreign investment. 2. Several cities changed very rapidly, succeeding in attracting wealth and migrants seeking work. Other cities saw the impoverishment and emigration of the greater part of their population.

The chapters of this dissertation explore the ways in which masculine values and priorities from the 1930s persisted in the Red Army despite the distinguished service of female combatants and divisions among male soldiers, commanders, and propagandists. Motives and actions such as hating and killing, comradeship and revenge, or serving Stalin and using skill, appeared as exclusively masculine in frontline culture, in contrast to depictions of vulnerable women as non-combatants and passive victims in the civilian realm. Analyzing Russian archival materials, military newspapers, and soldiers’ letters and memoirs, this study investigates the interaction and evolution of official and popular notions of soldiers and heroes as masculine subjects.

    Report On Central Asia I spent my last semester abroad at the Kazakhstan Institute of Management, Economics and Strategic Research (KIMEP). In this report I'm going to go into the way Central Asia, and Kazakhstan in particular, has been treated before and during the soviet period, and what the situation is like there today. Early Central Asia Early Central Asia has a long history going back to the Mongol Empire, the Golden Horde and the various Khanates which succeeded it. I didn't study much of this history so I can't explain it in much detail. I do know that for most of this period the peoples of Central Asia were largely nomadic. The exception are the ancient cities which lie along the silk road: Bukhara, Samarkand, the holy city of Turkestan, and Almaty. These are clustered around what is currently eastern Uzbekistan/southern Kazakhstan, and aside from Almaty they show the remains of remarkably advanced and sophisticated societies. Their position on the silk road allowed them to grow out from simple trading posts to proper towns and their strategic position made them good areas to fortify. This split between sedentary and nomadic life probably contributed to the ongoing rivalry between Uzbeks and Kazakhs. That and the fact that Uzbeks at one point invaded and controlled large swathes of Kazakh territory. It seems much of the history around this is slightly distorted by thegoogle national image of each country. The Uzbeks see their conquest of the Kazakh territories as benevolent while the Kazakhs proudly celebrate the anti-colonial warlord Eset Batyr.

Buketov Karaganda State University, Kazakhstan (E-mail: [email protected]) Women of Kazakhstan during the Great Patriotic War: Soviet historiography (1970–1980s) The article is devoted to the analysis of study degree of the issues of participation of women of Kazakhstan in the Great Patriotic War in the Soviet historical science of the 1970s–1980s. The interrelation of all-union and regional historiography is traced. However, it is not an integral phenomenon. The authors focus on rethinking the accumulated Soviet historiographic experience of the women's participation in the War. The relevance of the study of the problem of Soviet historiography is associated with the growing interest in the study of the female theme in wartime. In this regard, there is a need to identify its achievements, shortcomings and un- У solved problems. Particular attention is paid to the works that have made a significant contribution to the study of the women's issues. The historiography of the studied problem began to form during the War itself and by the early 1970s had accumulated considerable historical baggage. The period of 1970s–1980s is theГ period of the most active study of the military and labor feats of women of the wartime. Of the women's theme in the War becomes independent. Historical publications on the period of 1941–1945 are conditionallyр divided into two groups: the works of a general nature that touch upon the female aspect in the War; special work on the military, labor and socio-political activities of the women during the War.

The Bank was founded by the intergovernmental agreement signed in January 2006 by the Russian Federation and the Republic of Kazakhstan. In April 2009 Armenia has completed all the admission procedures and became the third full member of the Bank. Next, in June 2009 Tajikistan joined the Bank. The Agreement on Establishing the Eurasian Development Bank has come into force for Belarus, it is in the process of finalising the required admission procedures. Electric power, water and energy, transportation infrastructure and high- tech and innovative industries are the key areas for Bank’s financing activity. As part of its mission the Bank carries out extensive research and analysis of contemporary development issues and trends in the region, with particular focus on Eurasian integration. The Bank also hosts regular conferences and round tables addressing various aspects of integration. In 2008, the Bank launched an annual EDB Eurasian Integration Yearbook (in English) and quarterly Journal of Eurasian Economic Integration (in Russian). Both publications are available online at www.eabr.org. The Bank’s Strategy and Research Department publishes detailed Industry and Country Analytical Reports and plans to undertake a number of research projects. The EDB System of Indicators of Eurasian Integration has become the first project in the pipeline.

Buchanan, Chair Associate Professor Lilya Kaganovsky Associate Professor Gabriel Solis Professor Thomas Turino Abstract My dissertation examines the interplay between ideology and entertainment as reflected in the holiday cycle of post-Soviet Kazakhstan. During a two-year ethnographic study of holiday celebrations and expressive culture in Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and China between 2004 and 2006, I attended state-sponsored celebrations as well as holiday events at religious establishments, children’s daycares and schools, and observed the social, familial watching of televised holiday programs. I conducted the bulk of my fieldwork in Almaty, the cosmopolitan former capital of Kazakhstan, with shorter stints in Kazakh areas of China and Mongolia. National and transnational ideologies and networks are intricately involved in musical celebrations in Kazakhstan and the Kazakhstani diaspora. My work examines how the state navigates between Kazakh nationalism and multiethnic harmony, a precarious balance that President Nazarbev has thus far has maintained fairly well, and how this managing of diversity dovetails with other important large-scale ideologies like Islam and globalism. In particular, I observe the use of calendars, zodiacs and habits of celebration as tools and reflections of nation building. In Central Asian New Year (Nauryz), for example, I look at the state’s effort to strengthen Kazakh nationhood, on the one hand, and the adherence to alternate identities on the other.
