An analysis of the Energy Payback Ratio (EPR) has been conducted, with special attention being paid to what happens when a wind turbine is placed in different environments (i.e. the open field vs. the forest), and what happens to these scenarios when recycling is applied to the energy balance. The results of the research demonstrate that the EPR values are highly dependent on the prerequisites chosen. It was found that the wind turbine placed in the open field had more favourable EPR values than the wind turbine in the forest, a result that is dependent upon the road being shorter and this scenario being placed closer to the existing electrical infrastructure. -

News release from Vestas Wind Systems A/S Aarhus, 27 June 2012 Page 1 of 2 Home furnishing giant IKEA invests in 90 MW of Vestas wind power Project of 30 V90-3.0 MW turbines is IKEA’s biggest investment in wind to date. The deal testifies that carbon conscious companies such as IKEA increasingly achieve their financial objectives while at the same time reducing their carbon footprint and securing a sustainable energy supply. Vestas has received an order for 30 units of the V90-3.0 MW wind turbine for the Glötesvålen project in the municipality of Härjedalen, Sweden. The order is placed by Swedish developer and long standing Vestas customer, O2. Delivery and installation of the turbines is scheduled to be completed in January 2015. Whereas O2 will be responsible for the development, construction and operation of the wind farm, it will be owned by Swedish home furnishing giant IKEA. The Glötesvålen project is IKEA’s largest, single investment in wind to date, bringing the company’s fleet of Vestas turbines to more than 115 MWs across Sweden, France, UK, and Denmark. It is IKEA’s goal to get all of its energy from renewable sources and the 30 Vestas turbines is a major step on that journey: When in operation in 2015, IKEA expects renewable energy to amount to 70-80 per cent of the Group’s global energy usage. In Sweden alone, the investment will make IKEA self-sufficient with electricity. Carbon conscious companies-segment is long-term focus area for Vestas The Glötesvålen project is yet another example of how carbon conscious companies are stepping up their active involvement in wind energy. -

A Road Map to Deliver Smart Grid in the UK Simon Skillings Summary The concept of a ‘smart grid’ involves the combination of instrumentation, communications and analytics that allows power network infrastructure to be operated in a dynamic and efficient manner as opposed to the ‘passive’ operational approach which is currently the norm in the UK. There exists general consensus that the challenges of climate change and system security, in particular the ability to accommodate significant volumes of decentralised and renewable generation, requires that the network infrastructure must be upgraded to enable smart operation. Failure to do so will act as a major obstacle in the transition to a low carbon economy. A second important aspect of network development involves the construction of a number of strategic interconnections across the North Sea to create a new off-shore grid. This opens up the opportunity to more fully exploit the vast untapped potential of off-shore wind energy. However, there are a series of obstacles which have hitherto hindered progress in upgrading the network. In particular, the current regulatory regime is not well designed to encourage network operators to embrace new technological opportunities and this is exacerbated by the extent of the risk and uncertainty involved. The government has a key role to play in injecting the necessary momentum by providing strong direction to the regulator on the outcomes that must be delivered. In addition, the government needs to ensure the appropriate financing routes are in place that will enable Ofgem to set a regulatory framework that leads to a low cost of capital for investors whilst retaining the necessary management incentives on network operators to deliver the required outcomes. -

Of the various forms of renewable energy, wind-generated electricity has a unique set of advantages, which make its potential environmental benefits especially large. Wind power produces relatively low levels of environmental damage over its life cycle (like solar), 1 relies on relatively mature technology, and already comprises a nontrivial share of energy production (like hydro and biomass). It is also based on a potentially enormous natural resource and has been growing rapidly in many industrialized and developing countries (Greene, et al. 2010). Global installed capacity of wind power rose an average of 25% a year from 2001 to 2012, to a total of 282,000 Megawatts (MW), and wind power now generates about 3% of global electricity consumption (data from World Wind Energy Association and BP 2012). 2 Although common experiences with the oil crises of the 1970s and more recent concerns 2 about global warming have motivated most industrialized countries to adopt wind-power development policies, they vary greatly in the extent to which they have successfully developed this renewable-energy source. -
