Career at Merchant Navy The Merchant Navy mainly deals with transporting cargo and occasionally, passengers, by sea. It has different fleets composed of Passenger Vessels, Cargo Liners, Tankers, Bulk Carriers, Car Carrier, containers as well as the other special types of vessels. Merchant Navy is the backbone of international trade, carrying cargo across the globe for Import & Export business. The Merchant navy career option mainly includes the following category ; Navigating officers (Deck side officers) Marine engineering Officers (Engine side officers) Crew members (To assist the officers) Specialized officers (Electrical officer, Radio officers) Shipping companies offer these positions on contracts for a period of 4 to 9 months. After finishing the contract period, the officers can enjoy leave and whenever they want to join back, the company will absorb them immediately. Presently the demands for Marine Engineers and Deck officers are high worldwide. The shipping companies are facing great shortage for the Deck and Engine officers. Hence the trained persons are getting immediate job opportunities all over the world. NAVIGATING OFFICERS TEAM They are responsible for the navigation of the Ship, the loading / discharge of cargo, radio communication and the control / safety of the crew, and passengers. The chief navigator of the ship is the master, who decides the course of the voyage and maneuvers the vessel. He exercises complete control over the officers, crew and any passengers on board the ship. From the trainee cadet level, one will be promoted to captain of the ship with proper sea- experience and further exams. 1. Captain 2. Chief Officer 3. Second Officer 4. Third Officer 5. Trainee Cadets ENGINEER OFFICERS TEAM : The ship's engineers have complete responsibility of the ship's engine room i.e., the main engine,boilers, pumps, hydraulic fuel systems the ship's electrical generating plant and distribution system. From the trainee engineering officer level, one will be promoted to Chief Engineer of the ship with proper sea-experience and further exams. 1. Chief Engineer 2. Second Engineer 3. Third Engineer 4. Fourth Engineer 5. Junior Engineering cadets CREW TEAM : The GP crew involve with all kind of day to day activities to assist either to Chief officers in Deck side or Second Engineer in Engine side. One can get Promotion from GP crew position to Captain level or Chief Engineer level with proper exams and sea experience. The catering crew will perform the food preparation and kitchen activities. The specialized fitters & welders are very much needed for various types of vessels. 1.GP Crew ( Deck & Engine crew) 2.Catering crew ( Saloon Department) 3.Fitters, Welders Etc., The fleet of ships in the Merchant Navy comprises vessels of varying sizes and categories. These include passenger ships, cargo ships, oil/gas/chemical tankers, oilrig and other specialized vessels. These ships are owned, managed, and operated by various private and public shipping companies. Trained, technical personnel from various nationalities across the world man these ships. Merchant Navy, as a career, provides a unique opportunity for visiting foreign lands and experiencing varied culture and all this, while getting paid for it! Remuneration wise, Merchant Navy is one of the best-paid professionals in the world. What more could one ask of a career? Career as a Deck Officer A career at sea is both arduous and rewarding. It offers a high level of job satisfaction; a wide experience and challenging work environment. Experienced Mariners are in great demand in various shore assignments because of their ability to handle all types of job, their resourcefulness, sense of responsibility and ability to work under most demanding circumstances. A Deck officer is a very valuable and responsible member of a shipping crew. He has to navigate the ship from one port to another in all circumstances with caution and safety at all times and maintains the equipment operated by him in good working order. This gives him watch keeping experience and tremendous confidence. However, it must be understood that the life of an officer is tough, and not suited for the weak hearted. But there are compensations as well. A class III Certificated of Competency holder starts as a third officer (approx. Salary US$ 3500) with prospects of becoming a Master in about 8-10 years (approx. Salary US$ 10000 - 14000) plus leave and allowance. Following courses are conducted by Government approved training institutes. Course Name: One year Pre-Sea Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B.Sc Nautical Science affiliated to Indian Maritime University Eligibility : (a ) Pass in (10+2) or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate subjects with a PCM average of not less than 60% (b ) B.Sc. in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or Electronics with Physics as individual subject in one of the year, with an average of not less than 55% of marks in the final year. (c ) B.E./B. Tech. Degree from I.I.T. or from a college recognized by AICTE with an average of not less than 50% of marks in the final year. The candidates should have obtained 50% marks in English language at 10th or 12th Std or in the Degree course conducted by recognized Board or any University.
