DRMS DEMIL BULLETIN FY 07-006a February 16, 2007 Updated March 1, 2007 MILITARY COMBAT UNIFORMS
EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY FOR ALL DRMO’s WORLDWIDE: Military combat uniforms will only be released to Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and their Guard or Reserve components. This restriction applies to all Combat Uniforms (BDU, ACU, DCU, MARPAT, BDU 6-Color Desert AKA “Chocolate Chip”, NWUs, AFBDU or ABU) worn by the armed forces of the United States (See Attachment 2 for a detailed description). This restriction includes the trousers, shirts, jackets, and associated headwear or helmet covers. A partial list of NSNs is attached, however, DRMOs must ensure that no military combat uniforms are released to non-military units regardless of stock number or if identified by an LSN. Additionally, DRMO’s will not issue any combat uniform items to DODAACs: W91MQS or W9008Z.
Receipt: Military combat uniforms will be received or batched in accordance with established procedures. Combat uniforms will not be mixed with other clothing items during accumulation to facilitate ultimate disposal at ESD.
Reutilization: DRMO’s will only allow release to Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and their Guard or Reserve components. Release to any other Special Programs, Transfer, or Donation is not authorized.
At ESD: DRMOs will hold combat uniforms pending receipt of further guidance.
This guidance applies to all DRMO’s, CONUS and OCONUS.

1. Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) in camouflage colors. The BDU was the field utility uniform for all branches of the United States Armed Forces, although the Navy and the Marine Corps used a distinctive cap. The Navy, Marines, and Army have also developed distinctive uniforms to replace the BDU. See http://www.fas.org/man/dod- 101/sys/land/bdu.htm. The BDU camouflage patterns are:
• regular 3-color green BDU (USA and USMC issue);
• desert 3-color BDU;
2. BDU in 6-color desert (also known as "chocolate chip"). The 6-color chocolate chip is obsolete, but is being used to support ISF.

3. The Army Combat Uniform, or ACU, is a new combat uniform (battledress) to be worn by the United States Army. It uses a universal camouflage pixelated pattern of camouflage. It blends green, tan, and gray to work effectively in woodland, desert, and urban environments (see attached):

4. MARPAT (short for MARine Disruptive PATtern) is a pixelated camouflage pattern in use by the United States Marine Corps. MARPAT is a trademark of the United States Marine Corps. It is the new camouflage design now used by the Marine Corps. MARPAT has patterns produced by highly complex fractal equations due to a positive feedback. In addition to the Marines trademarking the name, they are also in the process of patenting the camouflage patterns. It should be noted to make the pattern strictly Marine Corps, the Marine Corps emblem has been incorporated into the pattern.
5. Naval Work Uniform (NWUs). The new NWU uniform, like its MARPAT cousin, is a combat utility-style uniform, but unlike the tactical MARPAT, the new NWU uses a non-tactical, predominately blue digital pattern with gray and black serving as the supplementing colors. The digital pattern also has the same infrared readback patterns like that of the MARPAT uniform, allowing U.S. Marines to easily identify Naval personnel using IR equipment.

6. Air Force BDU. The Air Force currently continues to wear the regular and desert 3- color BDU (see item 1 above). The Airman Battle Uniform(ABU) is the new camouflage battledress uniform for the United States Air Force. It is currently in the beginning stages of being phased into service and will replace the Battle Dress Uniform by Fiscal Year 2011. The ABU will be "wash and wear," meaning the only care needed will be to wash and dry it. The ABU will replace the familiar camouflage-pattern Battle Dress Uniform (BDU), which replaced the olive drab "fatigues," and has been in use since 1981.
