But she was profoundly influenced by the work of contemporary musicians. She wanted her writing to emulate, ... ‘all of the intricacy, all of the discipline, that she heard in black musical performance.’” In this course, we will explore Toni Morrison’s canonical oevure from novels, Jazz and Song of Solomon to Sula and Beloved. In addition to Morrison’s works, we will examine the intersection of African American literature and music, as well as race, gender and spirituality. This seminar will juxtapose Morrison’s renowned literature with the performances of black musicians from Nina Simone and Curtis Mayfield to Issac Hayes and Aretha Franklin. As both text and performance, prose and poetry, and literature and music, studying the works of Toni Morrison offers an excellent resource for our investigation of black literary studies. This seminar is designed to give students a profound examination of Toni Morrison’s writing, and involve students in the kinds of research that the discipline of literary studies currently demands, including: working with primary sources and archival materials; reviewing the critical literature; using online databases of historical newspapers, periodicals, and other cultural materials; exploring relevant contexts in literary, linguistic, and cultural history; studying the etymological history and changing meanings of words; experimenting with new methods of computational analysis of texts; and other methodologies.

His presence is so strong during the holidays for African Americans because he is one of the distinctive cultural markers of the season. The question at hand is why is he relegated to the Christmas season but what about the rest of the year. In 2010, National Public Radio (NPR) created the series 50 Great Voices as a way to expose NPR listeners to artists who were not at the forefront of public consciousness. On June 26, 2010 Donny Hathaway debuted as the “Neglected Heart of Soul” but does “neglected” hold up. I believe “neglected” becomes situational depending on who is doing the remembering. The objective of my dissertation is to locate Donny Hathaway as a central figure in 1970s Soul music, to understand his growing influence over contemporary artists, and his musical legacy. I used Stuart Hall’s “representation” as my overarching theoretical framework. I wanted a theory that would be fluid enough to be relevant in the different phases of Donny Hathaway’s musical career. By using representation I was able to identify and understand the musical influences on Donny Hathaway.

WHO? This SongVersation was sparked AGAIN, over a year ago now, in January of 2015. As I sat on the set of BET’s one hour drama series Being Mary Jane, I became very frustrated as I searched for words to explain spiritual principles to intellectual people. That experience haunted me, and compelled me to do just that, to best of my ability, here. The truth is, my highest hope with my platform has always been, to bring spiritual truths and love to the world through words and music, and these challenging experiences of the past 2 years (culminating on the set of Being Mary Jane) has shown me that it’s time for me to be able to speak that message as clearly as I can sing it. I remembered, (I didn’t exactly forget, but sometimes we need to be reminded of things) just last night, that I come from 7 generations of preachers, evangelists, singers and musicians that I can actually trace genealogically.
