  • BIO INDIA.ARIE Lauded As a Soul Music Superstar from Her Early
BIO INDIA.ARIE Lauded as a soul music superstar from her early twenties, India.Arie has always been at once angelic and mystical while managing to never isolate her audience – she is as at home accompanying a hip hop artist as she is producing truly spine-tingling soul music. India’s message of healing, love, and compassion viewed through the lens of her indelible artistry and spiritual practice has made her a global difference-maker for nearly two decades. It was 2001’s seminal Acoustic Soul (nominated for seven GRAMMYs) and the groundbreaking self-acceptance anthem “Video”, that established her as a bold new transformative force in music. Twenty-two GRAMMY nominations later (with four GRAMMY wins), she endures as one of the most empowering artists in music history (she launched her own lifestyle/music brand SoulBird in 2011), notching multiple award-winning albums and influential, chart-topping singles, meshing soul, folk, pop, R&B and hip hop and redefining the boundaries of the socially conscious singer/songwriter. Recognized as a major influence for a new generation of socially aware artists, India is both ahead of her time and of it - an evocative creative force on a mission to spread healing, peace, love and unconditional self-acceptance through the power of words and music. It’s no secret to India.Arie fans that the word ‘worthy’ has been an empowering expression of self-love for her and her audience over the years. Faithfully repurposed as the title and theme of her brand new 16-track album, including 13 songs and 3 interludes, India’s first full-length offering in five years is set to impact a world finally attuned to the kind of empathic sea-change the humanitarian singer/songwriter has embraced her entire career.

Diggin’ You Like Those Ol’ Soul Records 181 Diggin’ You Like Those Ol’ Soul Records: Meshell Ndegeocello and the Expanding Definition of Funk in Postsoul America Tammy L. Kernodle Today’s absolutist varieties of Black Nationalism have run into trouble when faced with the need to make sense of the increasingly distinct forms of black culture produced from various diaspora populations. The unashamedly hybrid character of these black cultures continually confounds any simplistic (essentialist or antiessentialist) understanding of the relationship between racial identity and racial nonidentity, between folk cultural authenticity and pop cultural betrayal. Paul Gilroy1 Funk, from its beginnings as terminology used to describe a specific genre of black music, has been equated with the following things: blackness, mascu- linity, personal and collective freedom, and the groove. Even as the genre and terminology gave way to new forms of expression, the performance aesthetic developed by myriad bands throughout the 1960s and 1970s remained an im- portant part of post-1970s black popular culture. In the early 1990s, rhythm and blues (R&B) splintered into a new substyle that reached back to the live instru- mentation and infectious grooves of funk but also reflected a new racial and social consciousness that was rooted in the experiences of the postsoul genera- tion. One of the pivotal albums advancing this style was Meshell Ndegeocello’s Plantation Lullabies (1993). Ndegeocello’s sound was an amalgamation of 0026-3079/2013/5204-181$2.50/0 American Studies, 52:4 (2013): 181-204 181 182 Tammy L. Kernodle several things. • ARTICULATIONS of COLORISM in POPULAR MEDIA, 1982-2012 By
THE PUBLICNESS OF THE PRIVATE: ARTICULATIONS OF COLORISM IN POPULAR MEDIA, 1982-2012 by NICOLA AMANDA CORBIN (Under the Direction of James F. Hamilton) ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the discursive production of colorism (intra-race gender and skin-color discrimination) in select popular media by using articulation as a theoretical and methodological foundation. Materials examined include Alice Walker’s (1983) nonfiction collection In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens: Womanist Prose and accompanying literary reviews, a random sample of 133 issues of Essence magazine, and the promotional trailer for the documentary Dark Girls, the film’s official online promotional materials and sites, and corresponding online responses. The project concludes that a key way colorism is produced discursively is through the articulation of a black women’s historically produced politics of respectability within a broader opposition between the private and the public. This articulation inhibits the critical potential of some challenges that have been made to colorism. The study concludes by suggesting ways for progressive challenge to colorism. Hill Office Hours: Tuesdays from 1:00 PM-2:00 PM and by appointment Location: Hill Hall 512 Phone: (973) 353-5182 Email: [email protected] Course Overview: In an article in The New Yorker entitled, “Toni Morrison and Nina Simone, United in Soul,” Emily Lordi writes, “Toni Morrison was such an exceptional talent and seemed to float so high above the fray, that it’s easy to forget she was a product of her time. But she was profoundly influenced by the work of contemporary musicians. She wanted her writing to emulate, ... ‘all of the intricacy, all of the discipline, that she heard in black musical performance.’” In this course, we will explore Toni Morrison’s canonical oevure from novels, Jazz and Song of Solomon to Sula and Beloved. In addition to Morrison’s works, we will examine the intersection of African American literature and music, as well as race, gender and spirituality. This seminar will juxtapose Morrison’s renowned literature with the performances of black musicians from Nina Simone and Curtis Mayfield to Issac Hayes and Aretha Franklin. As both text and performance, prose and poetry, and literature and music, studying the works of Toni Morrison offers an excellent resource for our investigation of black literary studies. This seminar is designed to give students a profound examination of Toni Morrison’s writing, and involve students in the kinds of research that the discipline of literary studies currently demands, including: working with primary sources and archival materials; reviewing the critical literature; using online databases of historical newspapers, periodicals, and other cultural materials; exploring relevant contexts in literary, linguistic, and cultural history; studying the etymological history and changing meanings of words; experimenting with new methods of computational analysis of texts; and other methodologies.
