ALL THINGS TWIDDLE Some of you may remember that in a previous Village Life I asked for wool and keys and bits and bobs to make twiddle muffs. 'Twiddle muffs' are a knitted or crocheted band with items attached that patients living with the advanced stages of dementia can twiddle in their hands during their hospital stay. They help provide stimulation whilst on the wards and are valuable to patients. My mum who is 89 knits and crochets these along with twiddle blankets for her local hospital and they are very much welcome on the dementia ward. I would like to say a really big thank you to all of you who have left wool or other bits and pieces in the churches for this purpose. I have today been to Pickhill to pick up an enormous bag of wood so I would like to say a special thank you to that person. I have not been able to get your donations because of the pandemic so I am sorry if this thank you seems a little delayed. If anyone is able to donate wool or keys or other bits to go on a twiddle muff please feel free to give me a call and I can come and collect. Thanks again – Elaine McDonald 07732930772

RINGING THE CHANGES Calling all budding bell ringers, or those that have been bell ringers and want to take it up again

Ever wondered how the bells in the church ring? Ever thought of having a try? Why not come along and see what it is all about? Bell ringing or campanology is a really excellent skill and a good way of meeting new people.

After the lockdown the bell ringers are starting to meet up again to practice on a MONDAY evening (used to be Thursday from 7.30 pm) from 9 August 2021.

The bell ringers are a friendly and welcoming bunch and meet at St Michael’s Kirklington.

Just come along and give us a try and see if it is something you might be interested in. All ages from 11 years upwards are welcome. There is no upper age limit.

FAREWELL WORDS FROM KIRKLINGTON POSTMAN OF 30+ YEARS ROB FIGG

He shares with us all : ‘I was going to fill in the ‘things about me for My Favourite Things’ but then you all know me so well …

Then I was going to tell you about me falling off my bike on black ice when the bike went one way and I went the other when I first became a postman.

But then there is the time when I got my van stuck in the snow …. there was no mobile phone so I put it into drive and then pushed it out …. then having to run after it!!

But really I would like to thank you all for all your friendship that you all have given me and the love and care that you have shown to me and my family after 30 some years. I have had some amazing things given to me … one of THE best was going to Buckingham Palace to see the Queen (thanks Jo Ropner!)

I am going to miss coming around to see you all and having our little catch ups – you have been my life so again the biggest THANK YOU for looking after me.

Rob your Postman

NEW RESIDENTS

The other Sunday late afternoon (after ’s first match and win in EURO 2020) I grabbed my notebook, pen and mask and and went on my rounds to meet new residents. In Melmerby I noticed about 6 to 8 teenagers playing cricket on the grass next to the playground, and when I got out of the car I could smell bbqs going on all around and hear people chatting and laughing. So for me all was well with the world.

I think/hope I am finally catching up as I now have met Chloe who with Jack, (3 years) and Theodore (5 months) moved from Ripon to Melmerby last November - I let them get back to their bbq.

In Wath I met Mark Forder and Amy Gudgeon who have moved out from . They arrived about a month ago and have been busy sorting out their new home and garden. They told me they felt they already knew quite a lot about Wath as people walking by would stop, say hello and chat.

I hope I haven’t missed any new resident, but if I have I am very sorry as we would like to wish everyone welcome to and hope you will be very happy among us. (Lilian)

WHATS USUALLY ON AT MELMERBY VILLAGE HALL?

PRODUCTION: Mrs. Beeton, My Sister

On Saturday September 11th in Melmerby Village Hall, award-winning playwright Alison Neil puts on her one-woman production of “Mrs Beeton, My Sister”. The production is a new interpretation of her successful play “Bella – The Story of Mrs Beeton” which toured the UK for 14 years and was broadcast on BBC Radio 4.

The original baking superstar, Isabella Beeton is best known for publishing her Book of Household Management in 1861 which sold 60,000 copies in its first year and was still in print until recently. She was the eldest of 21 children and this production features her younger sister Bessie reflecting on the extraordinary, but short, life of her famous sister who was undoubtedly the cooking celebrity of the Victorian age. Funds raised will go to St Mary’s Church in Wath. Meri Snowdon, one of the organising committee, said: “Alison’s shows have been described as ‘lively, humorous and engaging’ and we feel this is a performance not to be missed.
