Layout 1 (Page 1) Dick's Picks “Dick” was Dick Latvala, the official tape archivist for the Grateful Dead until 1999, whose inspiration and encyclopedic knowledge of the band’s vaults spawned the fabled Dick’s Picks series of live Dead concert recordings. Comprised of 36 volumes, Dick’s Picks follows the band on its long, strange trip through a multitude of eras, tours and venues, featuring handpicked shows that display the band at its visionary, improvisational height. Now, Real Gone Music is finally bringing this unparalleled cache of Dead concert brilliance to record stores—many of these volumes have never been available at music retail, and the others have been unavailable for close to a decade! GRATEFUL DEAD: Dick’s Picks Vol. 21— Richmond, Virginia 11/1/85 (3-CD Set) Though 1985 is reckoned as one of the better years for Dead tours in the ‘80s, this particular Pick remains the only show from that year to see DEAD an official release. And it’s no wonder that the producers of the series selected this date; it offers an unusual song selection and strong performances throughout. “Stagger Lee,” “Comes a Time” and Dylan’s “She Belongs to Me” are all seldom-heard revivals peculiar to 1985 and receive sterling renditions, and Bob Weir’s rave-up on the rarely-performed “Gloria” caps the show in grand fashion. Collector types will also note that this show provides the only instance of “Lost Sailor” and “Saint of Circumstance” being separated from each other in a set. Disc three adds nearly 40 minutes of bonus material from a September 2, 1980 show at the Community War Memorial in Rochester, NY, and all 40 minutes are devoted to a sublime medley of “Space”/”Iko Iko”/”Morning Dew”/”Sugar Magnolia.” Late-period Dead at its best! GRATEFUL DEAD: Dick’s Picks Vol. 13—Nassau Dick's Picks Coliseum, Uniondale, NY 5/6/81 (3-CD Set) This show, which appears here in its entirety, was already some- thing of a legend among Dead collectors before archivist Dick Latvala selected it for Dick’s Picks Vol. 13. Only the second GRATEFUL concert (at the time) from the ‘80s to be tapped for the series, it was (and is) widely regarded to be among the best perform- DEAD ances of the decade, particularly notable for a stunning sec- ond-set sequence featuring “He’s Gone” leading into the SELLING POINTS: last-ever performance of the “Caution Jam,” which then morphed into the first performance of the “Spanish Jam” in five years. A real high point • Dick’s Picks Vol. 13 Presents One of the Most of the era. But before that, you are treated to a hidden (and fiery) 35-minute version of Legendary Dead Shows of the ‘80s “Scarlet Begonias”/”Fire on the Mountain” from a show at the same venue hailing from 1979, as well as a very tight first set winding up with a rollicking “Deal!” A good one for fans of Brent Myd- • Features an Amazing Second Set Sequence of land, too.

  • This Is a Great Band, and I Had a Great Time” Bob Weir, Grateful Dead Founding Member (Guitar/Vocalist)
“This is a great band, and I had a great time” Bob Weir, Grateful Dead founding member (guitar/vocalist) “Inspired and accomplished musical discourse at such a deep and serious level: I had no problem at all believing that this was what the Grateful Dead sounded like 40 years ago.” David Gans, Grateful Dead Hour “I've always been impressed by DSO, but the other night I thought they'd taken it to a new level. It was some of the best Grateful Dead music I've heard in the past 20 years, and that covers some ground. Somehow, Jeff Mattson manages to play Jerry's parts perfectly in the spirit, but without any sense of being imitative. And boy, does the band pick up on this energy. Big fun!” Dennis McNally, Grateful Dead publicist & biographer 1980 – 1995; Author “A Long Strange Trip: The History of the Grateful Dead” “As one who is classically trained, I actually always thought that DSO was very cool, treating Grateful Dead music as repertoire- much as I've tried to do in my various bands.” Phil Lesh, Grateful Dead founding member (bass/vocals) “Playing with Dark Star Orchestra is something that feels just exactly like it felt when I was playing with the Grateful Dead.” Donna Jean Godchaux, Grateful Dead vocalist, frequent DSO guest “There are moments where I can close my eyes and go back 30 years and have it be every bit as rewarding and satisfying. Dark Star is an amazingly legitimate representation of the Dead.” Dan Healy, Grateful Dead sound engineer 1966 -1994 “Thank you for a real good time.” Jon Fishman, Phish drummer after sitting in with DSO “The Dark Star Orchestra re-creates Grateful Dead shows with a flashback-inducing meticulousness.” The New Yorker “...recreates the Dead concert experience with uncanny verisimilitude.
