Next Thursday, November 1, the Grateful Dead will resume a tradition by sharing the first of 30 tracks from the band’s vault as part of their yearly 30 Days Of Dead promotion. Twenty-nine more tracks will follow over the course of the month, each freely downloadable as a high-quality 320kbps MP3. 30 Days Of Dead 2018 was announced in the new Grateful Dead Almanac newsletter. A new, free track selected by Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux will be shared here each and every day in November. As always, the track will be unveiled without a date and venue, so Deadheads can guess when and where the version took place. Those who correctly name the date and place of the track shared will have a chance to win swag from the band. Google Pay was refreshed late last year with an all-new interface and a reworked direction. In addition to mobile payments, the app has expanded to support food orders, online shopping with exclusive discounts, and budget tracking. It's a big switch for users, and while many have likely adjusted to the new experience by now, others have stayed on the older, simplified UI. Unfortunately, time has run out for anyone procrastinating on downloading the new app, as Google has put one final nail in the coffin of the legacy version of Pay. As of today, the old Google Pay app and website no longer allow for sending or receiving money in the US, leaving it left without much functionality. Users had initially received a warning about this upcoming change back in February, with an expected deadline of April 5th. Although it's been a month since that date passed, Google has finally made the change official on its support page as of May 10th. If you have a balance in your account, you can still claim your cash without any issues, but new transactions will require the refreshed app. Since its launch last November, Google has been pushing its users towards the new Pay experience, even going as far as to launch a $30 credit campaign by completing various tasks. With the app officially out of beta, there's no reason to keep two versions of the software actively running in the US. If you have yet to upgrade to the latest version of Google Pay, you can grab the app from the Play Store link below or download the newest APK from APK Mirror. No more claiming money with the old app. Yet another change has appeared in the support documentation for Google Pay. As of yesterday, June 1st, it's no longer possible to claim funds sent to Google Pay via the older version of the app. It's not an insurmountable issue; those who've been sent money via Google Pay merely need to upgrade to the new app in order to claim any remaining money. Which probably isn't a great comfort if you're actively trying to avoid the new Google Pay, but them's the breaks. The Curtain With. Answer: Boston Music Hall - Boston, MA - September 16, 1972 This rarely-played combination of "Dark Star>Brokedown Palace" features the best of two Grateful Deads, the psychedelic masterpiece that defined the band in the late 60s, and a beautiful ballad from the Americana classic American Beauty. 2. Picasso Moon - 1991-05-12 - Shoreline Amphitheatre - Mountain View, CA Hint: A Bob Weir-John Barlow masterpiece from the late 1980s. Answer: Shoreline Amphitheatre - Mountain View, CA - May 12, 1991 Although occasionally maligned by fans, "Picasso Moon" allowed the band the opportunity to rock out with a raunchiness that was unheard since the demise of "Passenger" in the early 1980s, especially with the huge ending like on this version. 3. Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo > Franklin's Tower - 1979-09-01 - Holleder Stadium - Rochester, NY Hint: Two Garcia-Hunter songs, the second of which was joined to this first song after it lost its usual partner in 1977 Answer: Holleder Stadium - Rochester, NY - September 1, 1979 "Half-Step > Franklin's" was quite common in that time between performances of "Help>Slipknot," which disappeared from the repertoire 1977-1983, and 1985-1989. 4. Victim Or The Crime > Foolish Heart - 1988-06-28 - Saratoga Performing Arts Center - Saratoga Springs, NY Hint: Two brand-new songs, both debuted just over a week earlier, one by Bob and one by Jerry. Answer: Saratoga Performing Arts Center - Saratoga Springs, NY - June 28, 1988 These two songs, which would be a big part of the repertoire until 1995, still hadn't found a permanent place in the setlist, appearing in both the first and second sets for the nest year or two, until they both became staples of the second set by 1991. 5. Weather Report Suite > Stella Blue - 1974-02-23 - Winterland Arena - San Francisco, CA Hint: Two songs from the album released four months before this performance, a Bob behemoth, and a Jerry ballad. Answer: Winterland Arena - San Francisco, CA - February 23, 1974 These songs were debuted in 1973 (WRS), and 1972 (Stella Blue) and were central players on the recently-released Wake Of the Flood. "Stella Blue," and the third part of Weir's suite, "Let It Grow," would be part of the repertoire until 1995. 6. The Music Never Stopped - 1976-10-02 - Riverfront Coliseum - Cincinnati, OH Hint: The first single from their last studio album on their own label. Answer: Riverfront Coliseum - Cincinnati, OH - October 2, 1976 This song debuted in 1975, and was the first single from Blues For Allah. This was recorded to reel-to-reel tape, and is from the PA mix. 7. Attics Of My Life - 1970-12-27 - Legion Stadium - El Monte, CA Hint: One of the most beautiful, and rarely-played, songs the Dead ever recorded. Answer: Legion Stadium - El Monte, CA - December 27, 1970 This is the last live performance until the pair of live renditions in Fall 1972, and 1989, when it was brought back until 1995. 8. Doin' That Rag - 1969-04-25 - Kinetic Playground - Chicago, IL Hint: A song that was a few months away from being recorded for the Dead's third album, and which would only be played in 1969. Answer: Kinetic Playground - Chicago, IL - April 25, 1969 Played for a short nine month period, January through September of 1969, "Doin' That Rag" was a mix of classic psychedelic Grateful Dead mixed that was bridging the gap to the songs that would appear on the 1970 acoustic Dead albums.

    Forces of Chaos and Anarchy: Rock Music, the New Left and Social Movements, 1964 to 1972 Jordan Louis Cummings A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Political Science York University Toronto, Ontario September 2017 © Jordan Louis Cummings, 2017 Abstract This dissertation engages an unresolved debate on the ‘rock aesthetic’ in New Left Review, between Perry Anderson and David Fernbach while pointing toward a new dialectical social theory with which to analyze cultural form in general and music in particular. The debate was in the first instance methodological, formal/technical vs. lyrical contextual analysis. Within this methodological debate we see inscribed the misunderstanding the sixties New Left had of the sixties counterculture, and thus the conditions of possibility for a missed encounter. Rock music was neither a direct instantiation of the times, as Anderson implies, nor was it an entirely new form that must be schematized sui generis with a new set of axioms, as suggested by Fernbach. Indeed, it was both and then some. In engaging this debate, I use canonical figures of the era as my primary case studies as well as what I call my excursions – miniature analyses that capture the broader point I am making in my cognitive mapping of the cultural production of the long sixties. From this project’s standpoint, it was the Left that missed an encounter with the counterculture, not the counterculture that missed an encounter with the Left. To continue this engagement, I have deployed what I have called a theory of the missed encounter.

GRATEFUL DEAD: Dick’s Picks Vol. 21— Richmond, Virginia 11/1/85 (3-CD Set) Though 1985 is reckoned as one of the better years for Dead tours in the ‘80s, this particular Pick remains the only show from that year to see DEAD an official release. And it’s no wonder that the producers of the series selected this date; it offers an unusual song selection and strong performances throughout. “Stagger Lee,” “Comes a Time” and Dylan’s “She Belongs to Me” are all seldom-heard revivals peculiar to 1985 and receive sterling renditions, and Bob Weir’s rave-up on the rarely-performed “Gloria” caps the show in grand fashion. Collector types will also note that this show provides the only instance of “Lost Sailor” and “Saint of Circumstance” being separated from each other in a set. Disc three adds nearly 40 minutes of bonus material from a September 2, 1980 show at the Community War Memorial in Rochester, NY, and all 40 minutes are devoted to a sublime medley of “Space”/”Iko Iko”/”Morning Dew”/”Sugar Magnolia.” Late-period Dead at its best!
