Not only in real life, but on-screen as well. In this thesis nine reality-based programs of the Dutch television landscape are analysed on the awkward moments they show and how these moments are constructed. The different positions of respectively the maker, the subject and the viewer are all examined in relation to the construction of awkward moments. Drawing upon genre theories and the book on awkwardness of Jason Middleton, this thesis identifies how awkwardness is constructed in contemporary reality-based media products. Awkwardness is a strong, affective narrative tool that is used commonly, either intended or unintended. En Europa vond dat het plaatje klopte: The Common Linnets werden tweede in de finale. Bleek dat het project van DeLange is, er een haar in de boter zat met Waylon (al in de aanloop van het Eurovisiesongfestival waren die geruchten er) en The Common Linnets eerder een – ja hoe benoem je dat eigenlijk – een soort collectief is. DeLange is dus lang niet de frontvrouw, soms neemt een van de Crosby's (Matthew of Rob), JB Meijers of Jake Etheridge de zang voor zijn rekening en neemt DeLange (tijdens "Runaway Man“ bijvoorbeeld) de backings voor haar rekening. Bonne chance voor organisatoren en het  record label om – zeker in tijden waar een consument duidelijkheid en transparantie weet te waarderen – dit te verkopen aan muziekliefhebbers. Waarom het makkelijk maken als het moeilijk ook kan? Zo lijkt het verhaal van The Common Linnets wel te lezen. Mochten wij een managementfunctie hebben, we hadden het project al snel hertimmerd tot een duo met een bandje. Waarom? Omdat het blijkbaar werkt, omdat Europa dit lekker vindt. Dus moet je soms gewoon aanbieden wat de consument wil. Countryworst inderdaad. Als ze een moderne Cash en Carter willen zien, dan gééf je ze die gewoon. Nu goed, The Common Linnets heeft die keuze dus niet gemaakt, wat volgens ons commercieel gezien niet al te slim is, toch zeker live niet. Aan spontaniteit geen gebrek bij The Common Linnets nochtans.
