World Marriage Day Weekend!

Last weekend after 11:30 am mass, John and Maria Elisa Ast, happily told me that they would like to have a special blessing since January 31th was their 60th Wedding Anniversary. I saw a spark of light and joy in their eyes as they briefly shared with me about how they met each other. They showed me the rings they exchanged on their wedding day. They recognized that it has been their deep love for each other, and God’s special grace that has kept their marriage together through all these years. Right after mass, we prayed together in gratitude. And I asked God to continue blessing their sacred union with good health and happiness for years to come. This weekend, we celebrate World Marriage Day. And we would like to honor, recognize, bless and pray for all the Marriages and families of our St. Athanasius Community and around the world. So what is World Marriage Day? Let me share with you a little bit of history I found. HISTORY - “The idea of celebrating marriage began in Baton Rouge, La., in 1981, when couples encouraged the Mayor, the Governor and the Bishop to proclaim St. Valentine's Day as "We Believe in Marriage Day". The event was so successful, the idea was presented to and was adopted by Worldwide Marriage Encounter's National Leadership. By 1982, 43 Governors officially proclaimed the day and celebrations spread to U.S. military bases in several foreign countries. In 1983, the name was changed to "World Marriage Day,'' designated to be celebrated each year on the second Sunday in February. In 1993, his Holiness, Pope John Paul II, imparted his Apostolic Blessings on World Marriage Day. WMD celebrations continue to grow and spread to more countries and faith expressions every year.” More than ever, married couples and families need our prayers as they continue living out God’s calling of holiness and self-sacrifice in our parish community and society. Marriage is the foundation of the family, and the basic unit of society. Marriage life is a journey with God. Married couples know that they are called to be together in good times, and in bad, in sickness and in health. And through the grace of marriage, they promised to be faithful, and to love each other. Therefore, this day we celebrate you, all married couples whether it is your 1st, 10th, 40th, 60th, or 80th Wedding Anniversary. We are grateful to God for being witnesses of God’s fidelity, forgiveness, patience and love in our society. You are the light of the world and the salt of the earth by living out your Christian values. Even though, when your journey of committed love has been difficult and challenged by experiences of married life, you know that God is there with you, and that for God everything is possible. Happy and Blessed World Marriage Day!

In the Lord’s Joy,

Fr. Hernan Cuevas, Pastor

The church needed a new boiler. Students of the school benefited from two new labs: a computer lab and a STEM lab. Paul’s first post-college career was in health care, where he spent 10 years, working as a psychiatric nurse practitioner in New York. Then he embarked on a new challenge, beginning work at the Chicago Board of Trade as an arbitrage clerk for a futures clearing merchant. Description: “In Raids on the Unspeakable, Merton speaks of ‘the time of the end as a time of no room.’ In the tradition of the prophets of the Old Testament he looks underneath the affluence of his age at the problems deeply ingrained in America. It is a harsh assessment, but it ends on a positive note. We will reflect upon what Merton has to say about American culture and how we can move from despair to hope and from hatred to love.”

8 | The Chimes · St. Athanasius Parish FAITH FIRST

by Vinal Van Benthem, sfo February 9, 2020 Isaiah 58:7-10; Matthew 5:13-16 As our country begins to ramp up for presidential elections later this year we hear people on the evening news talking about the Bible and how, since our country was founded on Biblical principles, as its citizens we should continue to live out those same Biblical principles today. So how are we doing? In the reading from Isaiah we hear the Lord say “Share your bread with the hungry.” In my community here in mid- Wisconsin we actually had to move our food pantry to a larger building in order to accommodate the generosity of people who wish to share bread with those in need. “Shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked…” In addition to expanding the food pantry our community also opened a warming shelter with shower, laundry and meals available. But is that really enough? We can praise those who donate bread to the food pantry while unconsciously blaming the people who go there just for being hungry. We can work to open a warming shelter and still buy clothes manufactured under oppressive sweatshop conditions overseas. The prophet isn’t talking about what other people are to do; the prophet is talking about what we are to do. “If you remove from your midst oppression, false accusation and malicious speech…then light shall rise for you in the darkness.” The light that rises must be our light. We must lift the gloom for those who walk in darkness by removing oppression, false accusation and malicious speech from our day-to-day, business-as-usual lives. We can think we are the most enlightened people on the planet and still spread gloom wherever we go! “You are the salt of the earth.” Refining salt is a long and tedious process. How salty am I? “You are the light of the world.” A candle is consumed even as it gives its light. How bright is my light? Biblical principles call for a willingness to pour myself out for the good of the other. Am I really ready to do that? Or would I rather just hear about it on the evening news?

FAITH FIRST

February 16, 2020 Matthew 5:20-22A, 27-28, 33-34A, 37

JESUS SAID to his disciples: “I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. “You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with brother will be liable to judgment. “You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. “Again you have heard that it was said to your ancestors, Do not take a false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow. But I say to you, do not swear at all. Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the evil one.”

After reading the Gospel aloud, in unison, those gathered reflect on the following questions: • In this passage, what word, phrase or image struck you? • How does that speak to you personally? • How does that speak to our community at St. Athanasius? And to the wider Church? Conclude by praying the together.
