Last weekend after 11:30 am mass, John and Maria Elisa Ast, happily told me that they would like to have a special blessing since January 31th was their 60th Wedding Anniversary. I saw a spark of light and joy in their eyes as they briefly shared with me about how they met each other. They showed me the rings they exchanged on their wedding day. They recognized that it has been their deep love for each other, and God’s special grace that has kept their marriage together through all these years. Right after mass, we prayed together in gratitude. And I asked God to continue blessing their sacred union with good health and happiness for years to come. This weekend, we celebrate World Marriage Day. And we would like to honor, recognize, bless and pray for all the Marriages and families of our St. Athanasius Community and around the world. So what is World Marriage Day? Let me share with you a little bit of history I found. HISTORY - “The idea of celebrating marriage began in Baton Rouge, La., in 1981, when couples encouraged the Mayor, the Governor and the Bishop to proclaim St. Valentine's Day as "We Believe in Marriage Day". The event was so successful, the idea was presented to and was adopted by Worldwide Marriage Encounter's National Leadership. By 1982, 43 Governors officially proclaimed the day and celebrations spread to U.S. military bases in several foreign countries. In 1983, the name was changed to "World Marriage Day,'' designated to be celebrated each year on the second Sunday in February. In 1993, his Holiness, Pope John Paul II, imparted his Apostolic Blessings on World Marriage Day. WMD celebrations continue to grow and spread to more countries and faith expressions every year.” More than ever, married couples and families need our prayers as they continue living out God’s calling of holiness and self-sacrifice in our parish community and society. Marriage is the foundation of the family, and the basic unit of society. Marriage life is a journey with God. Married couples know that they are called to be together in good times, and in bad, in sickness and in health. And through the grace of marriage, they promised to be faithful, and to love each other. Therefore, this day we celebrate you, all married couples whether it is your 1st, 10th, 40th, 60th, or 80th Wedding Anniversary. We are grateful to God for being witnesses of God’s fidelity, forgiveness, patience and love in our society. You are the light of the world and the salt of the earth by living out your Christian values. Even though, when your journey of committed love has been difficult and challenged by experiences of married life, you know that God is there with you, and that for God everything is possible. Happy and Blessed World Marriage Day! In the Lord’s Joy, Fr.
