The Library Company of Philadelphia PROGRAM IN EARLY AMERICAN ECONOMY AND SOCIETY NEW BOOK SERIES

The Library Company of Philadelphia's Program in Early American Economy and Society and the Johns Hopkins University Press are pleased to announce a new book series, "Studies in Early American Economy and Society." The scope of this series will encompass fields of scholarship including, but not limited to, commerce, finance, business, manufacturing, agriculture, and political economy of the American colonies and early nation down to about 1850. Work on the Atlantic world economy, comparative regional and international development, the transformation of North American colonies into a rapidly ascending nation within the world economy, the nature of population and migration patterns, popular perceptions of credit and debt in the early nation, and numerous other topics in the broad field of economic history which have flourished in recent years are within the compass of this series. The Library Company of Philadelphia PROGRAM IN EARLY AMERICAN ECONOMY AND SOCIETY 2001-2002 FELLOWSHIPS

The Library Company of Philadelphia's Program in Early American Economy and Society will award one dissertation fellowship and one advanced research fellowship, tenable for nine consecutive months from September 2001 to May 2002 and carrying stipends of $15,000 and $30,000, respectively. The Program will also award four one-month research fellowships carrying stipends of S 1,600, tenable from June 2001 to May 2002.

Designed to promote scholarship on the origins and development of early American business and the economy to roughly 1850, these fellowships will provide scholars the opportunity to use the extensive printed and manuscript collections related to the history of commerce, finance, technology, manufacturing, agriculture, internal improvements, and economic policy-making that ar held by the Library Company and by numerous other institutions in its vicinity,

VISITING ONE-MONTH RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS IN EuLY AMERICAN HISTORY AND CULTURE FOR 2001-2002

The Library Company of Philadelphia and The Historical Society of Pennsylvania will jointly award approximately thirty one-month fellowships for research in resi- dence in either or both collections during the academic year 2001-2002. These two independent research libraries, adjacent to each other in Center City Philadelphia, have complementary collections capable of supporting research in a variety of fields and disciplines relating to the history of America and the Atlantic world from the 17th through the 19th centuries, and of the Philadelphia region well into the 20th century.

The Library Company's collections (500,000 volumes) reflect the whole range of early American print culture, including books, pamphlets, and magazines from all parts of the country, as well as books imported from Britain and the Continent. The Historical Society's archives (15 million items) richly document the social, cul- tural, and economic history of a region whose history was central to the nation's development. Both collections are strong in African-American and women's his- tory, popular print culture, local newspapers and printed ephemera, and graphic images of the Philadelphia region. THE STIPEND iS $1,600- Fellowships are tenable for any one-month period between June 2001 and May 2002. They support advanced, post-doctoral, or dissertation research. Candidates are encouraged to inquire about the appropriateness of the proposed topic, Fellows will be assisted in finding reasonably priced accomodations. Two Barra Foundation INTERNATIONAL FELOWSHIPS (which carry a stipend of $2,000 plus travel expenses) are reserved for foreign national scholars whose residence is outside the U. S. Other fellowships support research in early American economic history, bibliography, the history of books and reading, history, and popular medicine.
