G’Day All

As this is the last report before the A.G.M. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all club office bearers for their time and help for the 2017/18 season. Also thanks to all members that have helped in any way. Without you all this club would not and could not function.

Work at the clubrooms is progressing well and the light at the end of the tunnel is starting to look very bright. It is unfortunate that the project is not finished for the A.G.M. but with a little bit of luck and a stiff breeze it should be finished by Christmas or at the very least the New Year.

At the September committee meeting it was decided to go ahead with the parking area and award the construction and earthworks to Bill Mellican and Steve Payne. Both are members and have generously donated their earthmoving machinery for the project. Thank you Bill and Steve.

A working bee is being held on Friday 28th of September starting at 10:00 am to remove fencing and the old stables to allow Earthworks to start. Coffee and tea will be provided but bring your own lunch.

Calendars are about sold out (only about 40 left!) If you require one (or more) see Natalie or Ken Perrett.

Safe and happy motoring to all

Regards “Chisel”

The Battery Drive is still on. Batteries can be left at the Dillon’s or Chislett’s farm, or at King Cole or call Andrew Serra and he will come and pick up. Thanks to everyone helping with this continuing fundraiser. The price is up at the moment so please keep them coming in.

Annual General Meeting and Dinner – Friday 28th September

Proposed excursion to The Geelong Revival The Geelong revival is on the 25th November2018. We have a quotation from Warrnambool Bus lines at a cost of Approx $30.00 per head for a full bus of 57 people. The cost of course would adjust higher with less people on the bus. Viability of this trip will depend on the number of members participating and therefore keeping the cost affordable. The bus would be leaving Warrnambool at 7am and would depart Geelong at 4pm with a comfort stop at Colac each way. Partners who are not interested in Revival activities may spend the day in Geelong shopping. Indication of numbers along with a non-refundable deposit would be required by our October meeting.

They say Australia has an oil shortage…..

A lot of folks can’t understand how we came to have an oil shortage here in Australia. Well there’s a very simple answer: Nobody bothered to check the oil. We just didn’t know we were getting low. The reason for that is purely geographical. It’s Early I Know Last year we had a Christmas Raffle that a lot Our OIL is located in: of members contributed to by donating goods Bass Strait for hamper, cash to prizes or asking businesses East Queensland Shale Fields to donate goods This year we will be doing the same so if you Canning Basin can help in any way would be greatly Basin and appreciated. North West Continental Shelf Contact : Karen Carter 0458692270 BUT our DIPSTICKS are located in Canberra!!! Any Questions???

NOTICE RE NEWSLETTER EDITOR POSITION: As previously mentioned I will not be continuing with editing the WDHVC monthly newsletter after the next AGM. Therefore we will be needing someone to step up and take the position. An assistant editor is also required. If you are able to take on a position or just want more information please call me on 0438 073 882 or John Nicholson on 0437 938 090 As this will be my last newsletter, thank you to all who have given me positive support over the last few years. Clubrooms Progress The good news is that we have been successful with a 2 for 1 grant of $2,400 from Warrnambool City Councils Community Development Fund, which will go towards the new disabled access for the front entry. This brings the total of Grants received so far to $32, 800, with a further 6 applications in the pipeline. Harry Droste and his band of willing club members are moving things forward with the building (external cladding, ramps to front and rear doors, most doors and windows are in, and the internal nib wall at the front entrance is well underway). Harry is also arranging the kitchen cupboards and other tradespeople for specific jobs, often at ‘mates rates’, and has been successful in obtaining even more donated materials, including hand- basins from Reece Plumbing.

The next big project is the carpark which will require the removal of topsoil and surplus soil, levelling & grading, and then the application of compacted material. This work has been planned and we have accepted quotes from Bill Melican and Steve Payne, both Club members, at extremely generous rates. This work will commence when weather conditions are more favourable, and should only take a couple of weeks. Surveyor Gary Vincent, also a Club member has given his time freely, along with friend of the Club, Engineer Glenn Rundell to work out the design and levels required. This work will be preceded with a working bee (on Friday, 28th Sept. at 10am), to make way for the car park construction, by removing the adjoining farm fence, old stable and masonry block walls from the site. The owner of the adjacent vacant land has been very agreeable in allowing access through his property for our machinery. Amongst other benefits, this will prevent further damage to the existing bitumen driveway around the Clubrooms. Club member Stewart Jones has offered to assist with a modification and reinstatement to the driveway entrance off Ziegler Parade .

So things are moving along quite nicely!

Page | 9 Pre-1905 Rally in Ballarat by Murray Murfett

The London to Brighton car rally for pre-1905 vehicles began as an annual run in 1927, and nowadays, more than 400 vehicles enter. A couple of weeks ago, a similar Ballarat-based event was run by the Veteran Car Club, the first conducted in Australia for cars (and motorcycles) built before 1905. Several of our club members braved the cold weather and travelled up to marvel at these developmental machines. There were 15 entries but the weather and the eccentricities of these old-fangled vehicles took its toll, and only 5 or 6 made it unaided to the lunch stop at Learmonth. It is possible that will become an annual event, and if so, would be well worth a visit.

A 1904 De Dion Bouton, 1904 “curved dash” Oldsmobile and a 1903 FN motorcycle outside the luncheon stop at Learmonth. On right a close-up of the popular De Dion Bouton 70 Years of Rob Roy Hill Climbing by Murray Murfett Located just an hour to the north-east of at Christmas Hills, Rob Roy is the second oldest, purpose-built hill climb in the world (Shelsley Walsh in England being the oldest). And not deterred by the forecast of snow on the nearby Dandenongs, a carload of our members braved the elements to enjoy a fantastic event. The rain, and hail, (which had deterred several competitors from attending) stopped as we arrived and the weather forecast of ‘the worst winter day this year’ did not eventuate.

Predominantly pre-war cars and ‘specials’, we were treated to some very slick cars such as Singer ‘Le Mans’, Wolseley ‘Hornet’, MG ‘PA’, Austin Healey, chain drive Frazer Nash, 30/98 & ‘D’ Type Vauxhalls, Lancia, Brescia Bugatti, a veteran and a vintage T- Model Ford, Austin 7’s, and even a very post-war Mini ‘Moke’ somehow snuck in.

Page | 10 The course starts off under the iconic PBR brake shoes with a gradual climb

And then a very steep incline where all the drivers can see ahead of them is sky, until it plateaus, with a slight left hand turn, coupled with a reverse camber. And this is where it gets really interesting, and where we watched for most of the day, with several cars spinning out, in spectacular 360’s and off the track. It was even more interesting when at one stage, a buck deer ran across the track, and shortly afterwards, a large kangaroo hopped across, forcing one driver to take evasive action. I’ll bet they’ve never experienced that at Shelsley Walsh!

It was a very well organised event (I suppose they’ve had 70 years of practice!), good catering and facilities. There were many exotic cars on display as well and during lunchtime, there were billy cart race for budding enthusiasts. A great day, and just as we were leaving, it started raining again! (Check it out on You Tube!) Montana Auto Museum

My son David and I are on holiday in the USA for a bit of picking and auto museums and swap meets and started from the Seattle area in the 2nd week of October. Going east out of Washington State the first stop of interest was the Montana Auto Museum in Deer Lodge, Montana. This is supposed to be one of the “Top Ten” car museums in the US. It is in a prison building that closed in 1979 and was converted into a museum complex. As well as the auto section it has other sections that tell the story of the prison itself and life on the frontier in Montana in the 1800s.

The Prison 1903 Ford

The auto museum has 166 vehicles on display. Some of them have been provided by local people for permanent display. The earliest include a replica of the 1986 Benz Motor Wagon, a 1903 Ford Model A Runabout and a 1907 Schacht High Wheeler and fifteen more pre-1920 cars.

Page | 11 Vintage Car section Chev Bel Airs Then there were about 30 cars from 1920 to early 30s and more than half were Model T and A’s. Most of the decades through to the late 1970s were well represented. One local has on display his collection of 9 nicely restored 1955 to 1957 Chev Bel Airs and line up of early 1960s to late 1970s Corvettes. The display is well set up in order of age but a bit close up in places. However most all cars were nicely restored and a few left in original condition. Except for a Porsche, a couple of VWs and a 1952 MG all the rest were American.

Also on display on a 1950 Plymouth was a Thermador Car Cooler which was a popular type of car air conditioner used from the 1930s to 1960s before the advent of the modern refrigeration type units.

Plymouth with Thermador on right window Corvette Line It used the coolingup effect of evaporation of water and the device was hung out the side of a car on a window. The 4 litre water lasted about 200 km driving. After the car museum we went through the foreboding and slightly derelict old prison complex which started in the mid-1800s with wooden walled facility and then at the turn of the century was gradually transformed into a stone and brick walled prison. They had on display a hangman’s scaffold with rope which was first used in 1924 and retired in about 1940. It is apparently one of the last original wooden scaffolds in the US.
