Commissioned by the Seattle Symphony and recorded live in concert, The Flying Lotus is Rahman’s first composition solely for orchestra and features Seattle Symphony’s Second Assistant Concertmaster Simon James as the violin soloist. “The Flying Lotus is a musical impression of where India was and where it’s going,” says Rahman in an interview with The Seattle Times. “India is very progressive now. People are in such a very strong kind of mood. I thought I should capture musically those feelings of elation and also helplessness in a way. How can you say that musically, and also with a sense of pride in it? The spring 2013 shows are slated to kick off in New York on Sept. 13 — a date that’s become a thorn in the Milanese side, with Mario Boselli, head of the Italian Chamber of Fashion, lashing out at a calendar he believes was foisted upon the Italians by New York’s Council of Fashion Designers of America. In 2008, the governing fashion organizations of the four fashion capitals — New York, London, Milan and Paris — agreed to kick off the collections season on the second Thursday in February and September. Sometimes — like this year — that means the New York shows start three days after Labor Day, but for the next three years, the shows will kick off the following week. Boselli claimed the sec- ond Thursday rule was only for the short term. “After three years, we should sit down and decide on the next three years, and we don’t understand why the CFDA has single- handedly set the New York show dates later in September next year,” Boselli said.

The periodic table determines location and chemical properties of superheavy elements. 14 new long-living superheavy elements found by Proton-21 laboratory and one long-living superheavy element found by A.Marinov were identified. Introduction At present there are 118 elements known [1]. However, there are only 104 of them well-studied. The superheavy nuclei existence problem and also nuclones collective states problems (super-nuclei, nuclear associations, multi-nuclei clusters, nuclear condensate etc.) long ago have become subject of experimental and theoretical research [2-7]. This problem is specially important for modern astrophysical concepts [8-10]. The main branch of experimental research of superheavy nuclei isotopes and exotic isotopes of light nuclei is a new elements synthesis by different accelerator with latter investigation of nuclei collision results. However this method has two important and unsolved problems [11, 12]. The first one is the excess energy of the synthesized nucleus. The energy required to overcome the Coulomb barrier during the nuclei collision transforms 1 into internal energy of the newly formed nucleus and it is usually enough for instant nuclei fission, because the internal clusters of the nuclei have energy over Coulomb barrier. This leads to a very complex experimental task of "discharge" of excess energy by high-energy particle radiation - gamma-quantum, neutron, positron, proton, alpha-particle [13] etc.

    1 Research Accomplishments Research Accomplishments Research School of Physical Sciences & Engineering 2000 7 Research Accomplishments Applied Mathematics The Department of Applied Mathematics performs research on fundamental and applied topics in colloid, surface and polymer science, largely in measurement of surface forces; on self-assembly of organic and inorganic structures at mesoscopic scales; and on disordered materials, mostly on micron-scale morphology and transport in porous structures. Research Summary (Applied Mathematics) Research Accomplishments 2000 has been a very busy year for this Department. For this writer, (too) much of that business has been devoted to consolidation of research activities, to forward planning and to ensuring our long-term survival. Earlier in the year, we were reviewed by an international committee of the highest standing that resulted in a report of overwhelming confidence in the future of the department. The review process was strenuous and thorough, and we are justifiably proud of the result. We are very grateful for the committee for their rigorous independence and efforts during those hot days in February. Professor Stephen Hyde We are now on a sounder long-term footing, and in the enviable position of recruiting - Head of Applied Mathematics the best talent we can find around the world in our perceived areas of strength: theoretical and experimental studies of complex condensed systems. Those systems range from surfaces and colloids to porous rocks. The work is at heart fundamental, but of direct interest to downstream scientists and technicians in the oil and cosmetics industries, the materials industries, and so on. Real advances have been made this year in characterisation of structure in disordered porous systems, using the armoury of integral and differential geometry, in understanding of a range of surface forces and in X-ray tomographic technology.
