New Jersey Register of Historic Places Listings and Other Determinations as of 5/3/2011 with Recommendations for Listing on the Register by the Staff of the Bergen County Historic Sites Survey, 1986, updated through April 2011 There are two lists, one for historic districts and another for individual properties. They may be incomplete and have errors. They are updated as additions are made to the Registers and as BCDCHA recommendations are reevaluated as part of the ongoing update of the Bergen County Historic Sites Survey begun in 1999 and as additional information becomes available. For information regarding Register certification of eligibility (COE) and Register listing contact the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office, Mail Code 501-04B, Department of Environmental Protection, PO Box 420 Trenton, NJ 08625-0420, (609) 984-0176, [email protected] or to request a COE, please consult the requirements for a Preliminary Application at http://www.state.nj.us/dep/hpo/1identify/nrsr.htm. For information about the Bergen County Historic Sites Survey contact the Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs, Bergen County Department of Parks, One Bergen County Plaza, 4th Floor, Hackensack, NJ 078601-7076, (201) 336-7294, [email protected]. Copies of the survey are available for consultation in the office of the Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs and the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office. Copies for municipalities may be in local public library. Copies of the 1979-1985 survey are at the Johnson Free Public Library and the Fairleigh Dickinson University Library in Hackensack and at the Bergen Community College Library in Paramus, the New Jersey Historical Society Library in Newark, and New Jersey Historic Preservation Office in Trenton. Key: First number: Example: 0201-004. The number is the database number from the Bergen County Historic Sites Survey conducted by the Bergen County Department of Parks, Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs between 1979-1985 with ongoing updates since 1999 . The numbers used in the 1979-85 survey are converted into numbers with three digit endings. For example, earlier Historic Site # 0201-1 is converted to 0201-001. The number for historic districts in the database end with “D” and two digits and all previous streetscapes numbers are converted to historic district numbers. BCDCHA Recommendation: Recommendation by the consultants and staff of the Bergen County Historic Sites Survey that the district or property is probably eligible for listing on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places. Most of these recommendations date to the mid 1980’s and are analyses based on the Bergen County Historic Sites Survey. If municipal survey has been updated since 1999 the updates are used for analyses. This is a professional rather than an official recommendation as official opinions and certifications of eligibility must be obtained through the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office (HPO). If the property is listed on the Registers or has a ruling by the HPO, the BCDCHA Recommendation may be omitted. BC Stone House Survey: Included in the Thematic Nomination of Early Stone Houses of Bergen County, followed by survey number. A copy of this survey may be consulted by appointment at the office of the Bergen County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs. COE: Certification of Eligibility is issued by the New Jersey State Historic Preservation Officer. For properties not yet listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places, a COE satisfies a prerequisite to apply for funds from the New Jersey Historic Trust and the historic preservation grant program of the Bergen County Open Space, Recreation, Farmland & Historic Preservation Trust Fund http://www.state.nj.us/dep/hpo/1identify/nrsr_lists.htm DOE: Determination of Eligibility: A Determination of Eligibility is issued by the Keeper of the National Register, National Park Service, Department of Interior. It is a formal certification that a property is eligible for registration. http://www.state.nj.us/dep/hpo/1identify/nrsr_lists.htm NHL: National Historic Landmark: Nationally significant historic places designated by the Secretary of the Interior because they possess exceptional value or quality in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the United States. http://www.cr.nps.gov/nhl/ NR: National Register of Historic Places: The Nation's official list of cultural resources worthy of preservation. http://www.cr.nps.gov/nr/about.htm SHPO Opinion: This is an opinion of eligibility issued by the State Historic Preservation Officer. It is in response to a federally funded activity that will have an effect on historic properties not listed on the National Register. http://www.state.nj.us/dep/hpo/1identify/nrsr_lists.htm SR: New Jersey Register of Historic Places: The official lists of historic properties and districts worthy of preservation in New Jersey. http://www.state.nj.us/dep/hpo/1identify/identify.htm#njnrhp New Jersey Register of Historic Places List and Recommendations 5/9/2011 Page 1 Historic District List Municipality District Allendale 0201-D04; Erie Railroad Main Line District; right of way of Erie Railroad; Block: ; SHPO 2/20/2003 # 218; Alpine 0202-D01; Alpine Historic District; Cemetery, Church, East Main, West Main, Forest and Ridge streets; Closter Dock and Old Dock roads; Schoolhouse Lane; DuBois Avenue; Block: 41/1 & 4; 42/2-3; 43/1, 3 ,4, 6.01, 6.03 , 8; 44/1-5, 8; 47/1-5, 10; 60/9-18.; 0202-D02; Palisades Interstate Park; Situated roughly on the east side of US 9W and along the Hudson River approximately north of Massa Lane in Fort Lee to the NY State border with Alpine at the north; Block: Alpine: 1/1, 2/1, 3/1-3, 4/1/, 110/1, 140/8, etc.; NHL, NR 10/15/1966; SR 5/27/1971 0202-D03; Rio Vista District; Esplanade; Block: 21, 22; BCDCHA Recommendation; 0202-D05; Palisades Interstate Parkway Historic District; Palisades Interstate Parkway from Fort Lee, NJ northward to Bear Mountain, NY; Block: Alpine: part of 1/1, 2/1, 2/3, 3/1-3, 110/1, 150/1-3, 151/1; BCDCHA Recommendation; NR 8/2/1999 # 102; SR 10/3/1999 0202-D06; "Millionaires' Row" Landscape Amenities; US Route 9W; Block: ; BCDCHA Recommendation; SHPO 10/26/1979 # 4826; Bergenfield 0203-D01; Tunis R.
