Bower and William H . Jackson ABSTRACT Drainage areas are presented for most sites where streamflow data have been collected in Kentucky, as well as other selected locations throughout the State . Areas were planimetered on U .S . Geological Survey topographic quadrangle maps, and balanced to known areas taken from Smithsonian geographical tables for areas of quadrangles of the earth's surface . Stream sites are listed in downstream order starting at the headwaters . At sites where streamflow data have been collected, U .S . Geological Survey eight-digit numbers are shown . All sites are identified by reference to the topographic quadrangle, county, latitude, longitude, and in some cases a nearby town or landmark . All intervening areas in Kentucky along the Ohio River have been computed and are available in the District office even though some are not included in this report . An alphabetical index by stream name is provided . INTRODUCTION This report lists drainage areas for most sites in Kentucky where streamflow data have been collected, and for other sites in and around the State (fig . l, page 9) . It provides accurately determined drainage-areas for use in hydrologic investigations, such as low and flood-flow frequencies, and rainfall-runoff studies . The drainage area is one of the most important parameters used for planning and designing water-resources projects . It is that area, at a specified stream location, measured in a horizontal plane and enclosed by a topographic divide, which receives all direct surface runoff within the basin . Drainage areas listed in this report extend into adjacent states where appropriate . Some of the drainage basins in the south or central part of Kentucky include limestone terrain characterized by sinkholes . Water percolating into a sinkhole may eventually find its way into the stream draining the surface basin containing the sink, or possibly into the stream draining an adjacent basin . Therefore, the effective contribution to runoff of an area affected by sink holes may differ from an area with no sinkholes . In this report an approximate summation of sinkhole area within a drainage basin is listed as the non-contributing drainage area . The U .S . Geological Survey district offices in the adjacent states of Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, and offices of the Tennessee Valley Authority furnished data for this report . In a few instances the areas were subdivided or corrected to reflect man-made changes not shown on the maps, such as effects of municipal storm-sewer systems and diversion of water . Maps showing the drainage boundaries of the Kentucky sites are available in the files of the U .S . Geological Survey office in Louisville . Maps for those basins that lie outside of Kentucky may he obtained at the appropriate U .S . Geological Survey or Tennessee Valley Authority offices . DETERMINATION OF VALTIES Drainage Area .--Drainage areas were determined using procedures recommended by the Federal Interagency River Basin Committee (Subcommittee on Hydrology), using the latest available topographic quadrangle maps of the U .S . Geological Survey . Maps of two scales were used, either 1 :62,500 (1 inch equals approximately 1 mile) or 1 :24,000 (1 inch equals 2,000 feet) . All Kentucky areas were planimetered on maps with scale 1 :24,000 . The true areas of the quadrangle maps used were determined from the Smithsonian geographical tables on areas of quadrilaterals ; then all areas in each quadrangle, whether within or outside the drainage basin were measured, planimetered and balanced to a tolerance of 0 .5 percent . Unless otherwise specified, the values include the total areas from all states associated with the site . Most of the areas listed in this report were determined in the early 1960's by several Federal and State Agencies . Revisions and subdivisions into smaller areas have been completed as better quality maps became available . Man made changes such as dams or channel straightening may have caused some areas to be inundated by water or drained of standing water . These areas will require appropriate adjustments . R iver Distance .--River distances on all streams in Kentucky, except the Ohio River, are measured along the main channel in an upstream direction from the mouth (mile "0") to their point of origin . Tributaries to a main stream are measured along the main channel of the tributary in an upstream direction from its mouth, or confluence with the main stream (mile "0"), to its point of origin . The Ohio River, the only exception to the above rule, originates (mile "0") at the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers (Pittsburg, Pennsylvania) and is measured downstream to its confluence with the Mississippi River . Tributaries to the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers are measured using the standard procedures previously described . River distances in this report were derived at the time the drainage areas were determined . Minor adjustments may be required due to the effects of man-made dams or channel dredging on the line of measurement . EXPLANATION OF TABLES Station Numbe r .--The U .S . Geological Survey has assigned station numbers at most stream locations in Kentucky where hydrologic data has been collected . The numbering system is based on an eight digit sequence such as "03100000" . The first two digits indentify the drainage basin within which the site lies . For example, "03" refers to the Ohio River basin and "07" to the Lower Mississippi River basin . The remaining six digits run sequentially from the headwaters to the mouth of the basin . Numbers in the Ohio River basin run from 0300001 in the headwaters to 03999999 at the mouth where it discharges into the Mississippi River, and include all tributaries in New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois that discharge into it . Gaps are left in the series to allow for the assignment to new stations, hence the numbers are not consecutive . Many of the sites in this report have never been used for hydrologic-data collection, thus station numbers have not been assigned . Stream Order and Location .--The rank or order of the stream system is indicated by indention in the tables . The Ohio and Lower Mississippi Rivers are considered the first-order streams . Each succeeding entry for a tributary is indented three spaces and has the following information : station name, latitude, longitude, any descriptive terminology such as "at mouth", "above Hackney Creek", "at bridge on U .S . Highway 51", etc .

Activities Near High-quality Waters and Outstand- ing National Resources Waters, 401 KAR 5:029, 5:030, and 5:031. Kentucky water quality standards (401 KAR 5:029) require the use of BMPs to protect high-quality waters and outstanding national resources waters listed in 401 KAR 5:030. In addition, outstanding resource wa- ters that support federally listed threatened and endan- gered species require protection (see 401 KAR 5:031). Activities Near Wild Rivers, KRS 146.200 et seq. and 401 KAR 4:100-140. The Kentucky Wild Rivers Act and associated regulations give special protection to streams designated as “wild rivers,” including regulation of sil- vicultural activity. Before undertaking any silvicultural activity in a corridor of a designated wild river, the land- owner or logger should contact the Wild Rivers Program of the Kentucky Division of Water for applicable regula- tions and instructions. Debris in Floodplains, KRS 151.250. The Kentucky Division of Water has authority over the placement of debris (including logging slash) in floodplains of peren- nial streams that have a drainage area larger than one- square mile. The Division of Water advises that as long as the BMPs for Streamside Management Zones and log- ging debris are followed, landowners and loggers will be considered in compliance with floodplain regulations that address debris. If these BMPs are not followed, the Ken- tucky Division of Water can institute enforcement pro- ceedings.
