Sweeney founded West Seattle’s Alki Lumber & Hardware Co. on Harbor Avenue, when Seattle was home to countless Iindependent lumber yards. Today only a few remain, including Alki Lumber, in its fourth generation of Sweeney family ownership and operation. When James passed away in 1938, the business continued under his wife, Mayme, and son, Bill Sweeney. The Harbor Avenue location was closed, and Alki Lumber opened its doors at 36th Avenue and SW Avalon Street. In 1957, the business, including the original building structure, was moved across the street to its current location at 4422 36th Ave. SW. “Tell it to Sweeney” was a familiar sign on the trucks that serviced West Seattle in the early years and is a mantra of the company’s “can-do” service philosophy to this day. When Bill passed away in 1962, his son, Jim B. Sweeney, in his early 20s, took the helm. In the early 1960s, Jim bought wholesale dealer Dearborn Lumber Company and merged it with Alki Lumber’s retail arm as an avenue to compete in Seattle’s booming commercial lumber market. Thanks to the loyalty of longtime staff, Alki Lumber continued to supply lumber and hardware to projects throughout the Northwest and Alaska. After 50 years of unsurpassed leadership, Jim passed away in 2012. His daughter, Lynn (who started her career sweeping sawdust at age 12), and son-in-law, Matt Pedersen, continue the family’s heritage and ongoing commitment to service excellence. We are grateful to join with Shannon & Jon Felix of Avalon Glassworks and graphic artist Anjl Rodee of Lucky Dime Design to bring you a set of three custom globes, with etchings of places beloved to us all: In blue, the 1913 Alki Lighthouse, operated by the U.S. Coast Guard. (Design by Anjl Rodee.) In red, the 1942 Admiral Theater, whose lobby operated as the Portola Theater all the way back to 1919. (Design by Anjl Rodee.) In green, the “Birthplace of Seattle” Log House Museum of our Southwest Seattle Historical Society. (Design from our 20-year-old organizational logo.) Only 75 of these globes – 25 of each design – are available at today’s Gala. Each is hand-numbered, 1 through 25. You can purchase these globes for $40 apiece. The full set of three is $120. Net proceeds go to the historical society! Just go to the “Glass from the Past” table and let the volunteer know your bid number and which globe(s) you wish to take home today. Before the holidays, non-numbered “Glass from the Past” globes can be purchased after today’s Gala at Avalon Glassworks (beneath the West Seattle Bridge) and at our museum.
