Sweeney founded West Seattle’s Alki Lumber & Hardware Co. on Harbor Avenue, when Seattle was home to countless Iindependent lumber yards. Today only a few remain, including Alki Lumber, in its fourth generation of Sweeney family ownership and operation. When James passed away in 1938, the business continued under his wife, Mayme, and son, Bill Sweeney. The Harbor Avenue location was closed, and Alki Lumber opened its doors at 36th Avenue and SW Avalon Street. In 1957, the business, including the original building structure, was moved across the street to its current location at 4422 36th Ave. SW. “Tell it to Sweeney” was a familiar sign on the trucks that serviced West Seattle in the early years and is a mantra of the company’s “can-do” service philosophy to this day. When Bill passed away in 1962, his son, Jim B. Sweeney, in his early 20s, took the helm. In the early 1960s, Jim bought wholesale dealer Dearborn Lumber Company and merged it with Alki Lumber’s retail arm as an avenue to compete in Seattle’s booming commercial lumber market. Thanks to the loyalty of longtime staff, Alki Lumber continued to supply lumber and hardware to projects throughout the Northwest and Alaska. After 50 years of unsurpassed leadership, Jim passed away in 2012. His daughter, Lynn (who started her career sweeping sawdust at age 12), and son-in-law, Matt Pedersen, continue the family’s heritage and ongoing commitment to service excellence. It’s the beginning of a new tradition! At Nucor, we do everything in our power to help make our world a better place. For starters, we recycle steel. Keeping it out of landfills. Our recycling furnaces are designed to capture their emission dust. With many of our facilities not only meeting but also exceeding government standards. And we have reduced the size of our plants from old-fashioned steel mills to mini-mills to micro-mills that conserve even more electricity. In fact, our Castrip® process uses 90 percent less energy than conventional steelmaking. And all of our plants are actively involved in community conservation efforts, ranging from waterfowl conservation to toxic chemical collection. You see, in addition to making steel and steel products, we feel that looking out for the environment is our job, too. It’s no longer an oxymoron to care about the environment we live and work in.
