Outside and Prize ______Key Points:  Prior to participation on an outside team, student-athletes must complete an Outside Competition form.

Participation –  Individual Sports: Student-athletes may compete as an individual, unattached from Stanford, provided he/she does not receive expenses from an outside team. (Bylaw 17.31.1.7)  Team Sports: Student-athletes may compete on an outside team, provided participation occurs: o Outside of the Stanford playing season; and o During an institutional vacation period. (Bylaw 17.31.1)  Exception: Student-athletes may participate in national team tryouts and competition at any point during the academic year. There are no limits on the number of student-athletes from one institution that may compete on an Olympic or national team. (NCAA Bylaw 17.31.3)

Permissible Expenses – Please check with the Compliance Services Office prior to receiving any type of funding.  Individual Sports - A student-athlete or prospective student-athlete who participates in outside competition as an individual may receive actual and necessary expenses for practice and competition, directly related to the competition, from an outside sponsor (e.g., neighbor or local ) other than an , professional sports organization or a representative of Stanford’s athletics . (NCAA Bylaw 12.1.2.1.4.3) o Crowdfunding sites (e.g., GoFundMe) may be used in limited circumstances to raise money, from permissible sources, for participation on National/Olympic teams. Please check with the Compliance Services Office prior to starting a site or profile.  Team Sports - A student-athlete or prospect who participates in outside competition as part of a team may receive actual and necessary expenses for practice and competition, directly related to the team competition, from an outside sponsor (e.g., neighbor, local business, and team) other than an agent, professional sports organization or a representative of Stanford’s athletics interests. (NCAA Bylaw 12.1.2.1.4.3)

Prize Money – Please check with the Compliance Services Office prior to receiving any prize money.  Individual Sports - Individuals (including prospects) may accept prize money based on his/her place finish in an athletics event, up to actual and necessary expenses, provided the money is provided only by the sponsor of the event. (Bylaw 12.1.2.4.1). In individual sports, the calculation of actual and necessary expenses shall be based on expenses incurred during each calendar year, rather than on an event-by-event basis. (Bylaw 12.02.3) o Exception – Tennis: (NCAA Bylaw 12.1.2.4.2) . Prior to Full-Time Enrollment: Prior to full-time enrollment, an individual may accept up to $10,000 per calendar year in prize money, provided the money is provided only by the sponsor of the event. Anything beyond $10,000 in prize money in a particular year must be limited to cover only the individual’s actual and necessary expenses for participation in each respective event. . After Full-Time Enrollment: After initial full-time enrollment, an individual may receive prize money up to actual and necessary expenses, provided the money comes from the sponsor of the event.  Team Sports – An individual may accept prize money based on his/her team’s performance, up to actual and necessary expenses, provided the money is provided only by the team or the sponsor of the event. (NCAA Bylaw 12.1.2.4.3)

Actual and Necessary Expenses – Actual and necessary expenses include: meals, lodging, apparel, equipment and supplies, coaching and instruction, transportation, medical treatment and physical therapy, facility usage and entry fees. (NCAA Bylaw 12.02.2)

Note: A combination of both expenses and prize money may be used to cover expenses, but any combination of the two may not exceed actual and necessary expenses. Example #1: Student-athlete incurs the following: $500 – Flight, $700 - lodging expenses, $100 entry fee and $200 meals. Team pays the $500 flight. Student-athlete may accept up to $1,000 in prize money to cover remaining expenses. Example #2: Student-athlete incurs the following: $200 – flight, $600 – lodging, and $200 meals. Student-athlete receives $1,000 from neighbor to pay for expenses. Student-athlete may not receive prize money because expenses have already been covered. Anything beyond expenses would be an extra benefit.
