Gardner Dozois

When I started following the Hugo and Nebula Awards in the mid 1980s, Asimov’s dominated the awards in nominations and wins. This was the time of Gardner Dozois editorship of the magazine. It was a good combination of old and new writers. I fondly remember being blown away by the covers of his tenure. One of my favorites was the September 1991 cover of Asimov’s. It showed an image of a man from the 19th century with a camera and in a futuristic setting. The story was the novella The Gallery of His Dreams by Kristine Kathryn Rusch. It was about Civil War photographer Matthew Brady going through time and photographing the horror of war as he did in his own time. It was one of the many stories Dozois edited nominated for both the Hugo and Nebula. I would see Dozois at Worldcons regularly. He gave a great guest of honor speech at The Millennium Philcon (2001 Worldcon). He talked about how SF got him out of a small town life he did not want. Dozois also admitted to reading the best and worst SF had to offer as Asimov’s editor. At that same Worldcon, he was trying to get people to subscribe to his magazine like a Carnival barker in the Dealers Room. Dozois produced The Year’s Best Science Fiction series. Not only did he pick out the best stories of the year. He also reviewed the entire field. This included books, films, television, and anything else he could think of. If you wanted to know the state of the genre in any of its medium that report is where you went to. Gardner Dozois helped define Science Fiction.

(Continued from page 1) world. If you love the Muppets, you will love this show. • Dammit Jim, I am a Comedian, Not a Doctor - Polly Esther tells how Star Trek changed her life. It is inspiring, and shows how uplifting a fandom can be. • Meet the Replacements - A scientist tries to create the perfect family by building robots. It does not work and his new family aggravates him. The scientist’s former partner‘s son comes to live with this family. Will he discover what makes them different? (Patron’s Pick) • What If - A man and woman finds themselves in world where the traditional beliefs of gender roles no longer apply. What is this world like? What can we learn from this world? • FLIP - In the near future all US Citizens wear switches that will end their lives. What happens to a dysfunctional family living in this world. This change ramps up the stress the family faces. (Patron’s Pick) • The Light Princess - A princess is cursed and losses her gravity. Can she get it back? Does she want to? A classic story, told as a ballet. • MUTTINIK - The story of a Soviet space dog, told from the dog’s point of view. He tells the story how a scrappy young pup grows up and gets a trip to the stars. • Black Crow Cabaret - A witch from 1600s tells the story of her life. She escapes the gallows and finds herself in salons of France. A good fantasy with a mix of burlesque.

Next month hopefully a review. Page five June 2018 Megacon 2018
