In case of the infringements afore described, there will be sanctions, namely: • Warning; • Disqualification; • Ban and consequent prohibition of registration in subsequent events (for a period of two years). 2. THE RACES 2.1. Presentation of the race The starting point of this adventure is in the centre of Funchal with the athletes going along the pedestrianised area of Avenida Zarco, going past the remarkable Cathedral, then along rua José de Almeida as far as Praça do Povo. Once there, they will follow the promenade by the sea towards the Old Town, entering Rua Portão (Gate) de São Tiago and Travessa do Forte between the old houses to end up at Rua de Santa Maria, on the way to Largo do Socorro. Here, after passing by the charismatic Church of Socorro, they ascend by Calçada do Socorro to Largo da Forca, already heading for the easternmost part of the city. Following along most of the Rua do Lazareto, the athletes will soon reach the centre of São Gonçalo Parish after running along rua Nova da Igreja. Passing rapidly along rua Conde Carvalhal, the athletes will soon reach the slope that spreads over the amphitheatre of Fun- chal, going past Bica de Pau. To run along the Estrada do Aeroporto and Estrada da Camacha will be a real adventure, mainly for those who are not familiar with the Madeiran daily cosmopolitan life. After climbing Rua Caridade Pestana, they will reach rua do Balancal to make their entrance at the outstanding Palheiro Golf. They will not have time to take a swing but they will have the opportunity to watch the sun rising and to enjoy the view of the city waking up as the day drives the night away. Soon after, before they realise, the athletes will be going up towards Carreiras, then from there to will go down to Curral dos Romeiros, towards Largo das Babosas and then Monte, one of the most iconic spots of Madeira. From Monte, they will climb towards the Parque Ecológico do Funchal (Madeira Ecological Park), at Ribeira das Cales. From here, they will start climbing another part of the slope, covering the pathway that borders Levada da Ribeira das Cales and reach Casa do Burro, one of the refuges of the Chão da Lagoa plateau. But they cannot stay long for they have to continue along the track as far as Pico do Arieiro, after going past Casa do Arieiro, the site where the Regional Meteorological Services had their headquarters for many years.

  • Funchal, Madeira Island, Portugal
1 Funchal is getting ready! Funchal, Madeira Island, Portugal Funchal is the capital of Madeira Island, with an area of 76 km2 (10,3% of the island). The municipality is administratively divided in ten parishes: São Martinho, Santo António, São Pedro, São Roque, Monte, Imaculado Coração de Maria, Santa Luzia, Sé, Santa Maria Maior and São Gonçalo. The municipality with 112,015 inhabitants, in the 2011 census, has a relevant number of occurrences throughout the centuries of natural hazards, which have caused victims and huge destruction, such as flash floods, landslides, mudslides, rock fall, storms, storm surges and forest fires. Description of the hazards and vulnerability profile of the city The historical records reviewed so far revealed that the flash flood which caused more fatalities occurred in 9Th of October 1803. Official figures report the existence of 600 dead, although a letter from that season points to 1,000 people dead and missing, mostly in Funchal, at that time the municipality had approximately 25,000 inhabitants and the island population was around 90,000. In 1993, on October 29Th a flash flood, considered one of the most violent to hit the city of Funchal, left a unrecognizable, confused city with the balance of five dead, four missing and about 400 evacuees, high losses in public infrastructure and private sector facilities, and millions of euros in destruction. World Disaster Reduction Campaign 2010-2015 Making Cities Resilient: My City Is Getting Ready! www.unisdr.org/campaign [email protected] 2 The marina of Funchal retained large amount of debris and some human bodies.
