WAGGGS benefits from many international partnerships with non governmental organizations, corporations and other groups that support the work of the Girl Guiding/ Girl Scouting Movement. You can find more information about WAGGGS’ partnerships in Appendix 2 of this resource. Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting changes the lives of girls and young women through educational programmes, community leadership and advocacy work. WAGGGS and its Member Organizations provide enriching experiences for its members that stay with them for a lifetime.     TO MAKE GOOD CANADIANS: GIRL GUIDING IN INDIAN RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS A Thesis Submitted to the Committee on Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences TRENT UNIVERSITY Peterborough, Ontario, Canada © Copyright by Mary Jane McCallum 2001 Canadian Studies and Native Studies M.A. Program May2002 ABSTRACT To Make Good Canadians: Girl Guiding in Indian Residential Schools Mary Jane McCallum Between 1910 and 1970, the Guide movement became active and, indeed, prolific in Indian residential, day, and hostel schools, sanatoriums, reserves and Northern communities throughout Canada. In these contexts, Guiding embraced not only twentieth century youth citizenship training schemes, but also the colonial project of making First Nations and Inuit people good citizens. But ironically, while the Guide programme endeavoured to produce moral, disciplined and patriotic girls who would be prepared to undertake home and civic responsibilities as dutiful mothers and wives, it also encouraged girls to study and imitate 'wild' Indians. This thesis will explore the ways in which Girl Guides prepared girls for citizenship, arguing that the Indian, who signified to Guides authentic adventure, primitive skills and civic duty, was a model for their training. 'Playing Indian' enabled Guides to access these 'authentic' Indian virtues. It also enabled them to deny their roles as proponents of colonialism. For the first time, all candidates were asked to submit a short video of themselves as part of their nomination. Where candidates currently hold a significant position in their Member Organisation, they have been asked to relinquish this role within six months, if elected. This is partly to ensure no conflict of interest, and partly to ensure that they are able to devote sufficient time to the work of the Committee. As well as the personal statement the candidates have provided examples of how they believe they have demonstrated some of the key skills needed for a member of the Regional Committee.     The story of the world-wide 46th Jamboree On The Air 18 - 19 October 2003 Each year in the third full weekend of October hundred-thousands of Scouts and Guides all over the world ex- change greetings, learn about each others country and culture, swap programme ideas and make new friends. The contacts between them are established by amateur radio stations. This Jamboree-On-The-Air (JOTA) is the larg- est annual event for Scouts.     History of Guiding The Girl Guide Movement started in England in 1909. Robert Baden-Powell, a British Army General recently returned from the South African Wars, had written a series of articles on scouting based on his experiences there. These were published in an English boys’ magazine. Boys started practising scouting on their own and in 1908 the Boy Scouts were formed. By 1909 Scouting had become so popular that a rally was held at the Crystal Palace in London. Eleven thousand boys turned up. Great astonishment was caused by a group at the end of the long parade─girls! While their brothers had been busily occupied with Scouting, these girls had been copying them, usually in secret. Girls at that time were expected to be ladylike, doing needlework and art. Their place was definitely in the home, not outdoors dressed in outlandish costumes, practising stalking, tracking, first aid, stopping runaway horses and rescuing people from burning buildings! Both their mothers and the general public were shocked and horrified at the girls’ escapades and appearance─skirts hiked up, wearing Scout hats, carrying stout broomsticks, hung about with whistles, knives and enormous haversacks decorated with large red crosses. These daring girls pleaded with B-P to be allowed to join the Scouts. He agreed to help them but said that they would be Girl Guides and have Patrol names of flowers or birds, not wolves! He asked his sister, Agnes Baden-Powell, to help him with a girls’ organization and she became the first President of the Girl Guides. Working together, they produced Pamphlet A and Pamphlet B, outlining program ideas and badges for the girls.
