    A Short History of the RAF Britannia Birth of the Britannia Even as the Hastings was still in its prime as a 99 Squadron aircraft, thoughts were turning to a replacement that would take advantage of aeronauti- cal development and better meet the strategic air transport needs of the future. The Bristol Aircraft Britannia was to be the choice. If a conception date has to be determined for the totally military Britannia then it might be seen as July 1956 when the Chiefs of Staff set up the Bingley Committee (chaired by Rear Admiral A N C Bingley, the then Fifth Sea Lord and Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (Air)), to make recommendations on the inter-service requirements of the future air transport force. In mid-1957 the air transport force consisted of 20 Hastings, 10 Beverleys, 5 Comet 2s, 11 Vallettas. In an emergency this fleet could be supplemented with 30 Maritime Shackletons and 29 civil aircraft normally engaged in routine trooping. It was considered that this force did not match the possible demand and that an up-date was required. It is worth considering the backdrop to these deliberations. The Royal Air Force was con- cerned with the emergence of the thermo-nuclear bomb and acquiring its delivery system, the V- Force. Military emphasis had changed from the post-Korea threat of major war to the prospect of a prolonged period of maintaining delicately balanced forces to secure peace. There were clear signs that conflicts of a lesser nature were to be our concern, with a continuing commitment to global affairs.

No.151 Repair Unit. The aircraft was fitted out as a VIP aircraft, with kitchen, armchairs, settees, cocktail cabinet and toilet and used for a time by Lord Montgomery, and in 1947 by Lord Wavell. Flown at this time in overall silver colour scheme. 11 Mar 46 BAFO Communications Wing, Buckeburg. From 1946 - 49 KN645 was used as the personal aircraft of the British Military Governors of Germany - MRAF Sir Sholto Douglas, later Lord Douglas of Kirtleside and subsequently General Sir Brian Robertson later Lord Robertson of Oakridge. Duties at this time included weekly Thursday trips to Berlin for Control Commission of Germany meetings.

Edition 2.0 “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II” Air Commodore-in-Chief Royal Air Force Regiment Her Majesty The Queen unveiled this portrait of herself, which now dominates the entrance hall, in 1967. The portrait depicts the Queen as Sovereign of the Most Noble Order of the Thistle, Scotland’s premier Order of Chivalry. The portrait was commissioned by the Officers of the RAF Regiment to commemorate the Regiment’s 25th Anniversary and was executed by Huseph Riddle. Both at the unveiling and subsequently at the Royal Review of the RAF Regiment to commemorate the 40th Anniversary in 1982, The Queen expressed her particular satisfaction with the portrait. In all his dealings - with fellow soldiers, top brass, foreign nationals, prostitutes and the rest of the world in general - the little private always came off second best. But he remained the Army's hero, a trusting soul whose own little world of dreamy optimism was constantly devastated by unforeseen disaster.     Pooley's Dawn to Dusk Challenge David Monks & Russell Waughman 15th July 2016 A David Monks and Rusty Waughman Production © 2017 Flight Log David Monks and Russell "Rusty" Waughman Flight Date: 15th July 2016 Foreword As a young pilot, the Pooleys Dawn to Dusk Challenge appealed to my sense of adventure, I had wanted to enter since qualifying as a pilot 1995.The hardest part was finding an inspiring theme to make sure your challenge flight stands head and shoulders above the rest. Any pilots ego will tell you that "you are in it to win it"! Some 21 years later, I had the pleasure of meeting a remarkable man, Lancaster pilot Flight Lieutenant Russell "Rusty" Reay Waughman AFC, DFC, Legion D'Honneur RAF (rtd). A sprightly then 93 year old, he gave me the inspiration and the unique story to finally enter the challenge. The theme was very personal to Rusty as it retraced his war-time footsteps round the RAF camps he served at whilst serving with 101 (Special Duties) Squadron, many of them he hadn't seen since the 1940s, he hadn't seen his base, Ludford Magna, from the air since the night before D-Day. After just over eight hours of flying with Rusty, the privilege afforded to me that day outweighed the importance of my pilot ego hoping to win. I couldn't say the same for Rusty. I'm fortunate to count Rusty as a friend. 1 2 Introduction David Monks bought his first helicopter when he was 27 years of age, a Robinson R22 purchased as he completed his PPL(H).

Nov Sat 27 End of Season Party What can we say? Fantastic party in a superb venue, great food, two excellent bands and DJ Robbie to keep things moving along nicely. Norm's piece was made even funnier by Carl's inspired playing along and the impromptu Morris Dancers did impressively well. The photos from Axel and Ian capture some of the moments, but you had to be there to experience the wonderfully relaxed and friendly atmosphere of a major Hogsback event Sun 14 Remembrance Ride Gary ended up with a wet old day for his first ride as leader. Nevertheless 35 bikes joined him from both Hogsback and Thames Valley Chapters for the Remembrance ride to Shamley Green. It was a well researched and very good ride. Well done Gary and Kaz! Sun 7 Goodwood breakfast Brisk run to Goodwood for breakfast and back again for the Sunday Roast - marvellous! Sat 6 Club Night Fireworks Special Brilliant night of food, fun and fab fireworks - plus we handed over a cheque for £320 to The Alzheimers Society, said a proper hello to our new Road Crew (Cliff, Robin and Dave), marked the promotion of Dell and Steve to Road Captain, and recognised Axel as one of our official Chapter Photographers.

SCL – NEX/2206 EIA Study for Tai Wai to Hung Hom Section Final Environmental Impact Assessment Report 4 Cultural Heritage Impact 4.1 Introduction The EIA Study Brief for SCL requires a Cultural Heritage Impact Assessment (CHIA) comprising a Built Heritage Impact Assessment (BHIA) and an Archaeological Impact Assessment (AIA) to be conducted. The BHIA needs to search historic buildings, clan graves and landscape features within the study area while the AIA requires a terrestrial investigation of the archaeological potential of the study area, particularly the former Tai Hom Village Archaeological Site. The field investigation for former Tai Hom Village was carried out in March 2009. Tang/ Song Dynasty remains found are sparse and redeposited and hence of lesser archaeological significance. However, assemblage of Tang/ Song archaeological finds within urban setting is considered rare in Hong Kong. Other than the former Tai Hom Village Archaeological Site, the CHIA has also studied the impacts on the 3 historical buildings within former Tai Hom Village and, after studying their cultural significance and all possible options, recommended the most appropriate mitigation measures. The possible impacts caused by the construction and operation of the Project on other built heritages including but not limited to the Lung Tsun Stone Bridge have also been studied and the impacts have been minimised by adopting alternative construction methodologies. More details of the assessment findings and mitigation measures are given in this Chapter. 4.2 Environmental Legislation, Standards and Guidelines The assessment and protection of cultural heritage within HKSAR is governed by the following legislative standards and guidelines: • Environmental Impact Assessment Ordinance (EIAO); • Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance; and • Hong Kong Planning Standards and Guidelines (HKPSG).
