LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR An in-depth guide by Stu Lewis INTRODUCTION In Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary (1857), Western literature’s prototypical “Desperate Housewives” narrative, Charles and Emma Bovary travel to Rouen to attend the opera, and they attend a performance of Lucia di Lammermoor. Perhaps Flaubert chose this opera because it would appeal to Emma’s romantic nature, suggesting parallels between her life and that of the heroine: both women forced into unhappy marriages. But the reason could have been simpler—that given the popularity of this opera, someone who dropped in at the opera house on a given night would be likely to see Lucia. If there is one work that could be said to represent opera with a capital O, it is Lucia di Lammermoor. Lucia is a story of forbidden love, deceit, treachery, violence, family hatred, and suicide, culminating in the mother of all mad scenes. It features a heroic yet tragic tenor, villainous baritones and basses, a soprano with plenty of opportunity to show off her brilliant high notes and trills and every other trick she learned in the conservatory, and, to top it off, a mysterious ghost haunting the Scottish Highlands. This is not to say that Donizetti employed clichés, but rather that what was fresh and original in Donizetti's hands became clichés in the works of lesser composers. As Emma Bovary watched the opera, “She filled her heart with the melodious laments as they slowly floated up to her accompanied by the strains of the double basses, like the cries of a castaway in the tumult of a storm. -

THE UNIVERSITY OF HULL Reconstructing Palaeoenvironments of the White Peak Region of Derbyshire, Northern England being a Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Hull by Simon John Kitcher MPhysGeog May 2014 Declaration I hereby declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own, except where otherwise stated, and that it has not been previously submitted in application for any other degree at any other educational institution in the United Kingdom or overseas. ii Abstract Sub-fossil pollen from Holocene tufa pool sediments is used to investigate middle – late Holocene environmental conditions in the White Peak region of the Derbyshire Peak District in northern England. The overall aim is to use pollen analysis to resolve the relative influence of climate and anthropogenic landscape disturbance on the cessation of tufa production at Lathkill Dale and Monsal Dale in the White Peak region of the Peak District using past vegetation cover as a proxy. Modern White Peak pollen – vegetation relationships are examined to aid semi- quantitative interpretation of sub-fossil pollen assemblages. Moss-polsters and vegetation surveys incorporating novel methodologies are used to produce new Relative Pollen Productivity Estimates (RPPE) for 6 tree taxa, and new association indices for 16 herb taxa. RPPE’s of Alnus, Fraxinus and Pinus were similar to those produced at other European sites; Betula values displaying similarity with other UK sites only. RPPE’s for Fagus and Corylus were significantly lower than at other European sites. Pollen taphonomy in woodland floor mosses in Derbyshire and East Yorkshire is investigated. -

Designed by Frank Matcham, restored by Derek Sugden of Ove Arup Partners. Coursed rock-faced gritstone with ashlar dressings and Welsh slate roofs. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys plus attic. East symmetrical entrance front has 5 windows with curved ends. Banded pilasters to ground floor with entablature, plain pilasters to upper floors. Central recessed entrance flanked by single fluted and banded Doric columns in-antis, with pair of glazed double doors and canted glazed side panels plus 4 overlights with circular glazing. Above a concave plaster with scrolls. Either side a round headed doorway with fanlight, that to right now blocked. Beyond single canted doorways with double panel doors. Central 3 bays covered by ornate iron and glass canopy supported on 2 columns each topped by an octagonal lantern. Above large central Diocletian window in moulded surround with keystone and curved balustrade, flanked by plain sashes in moulded surrounds with keystones. -

Il documento non faceva menzione al titolo e all’argomento dell’opera, ma specificava che avrebbe dovuto essere un’opera buffa e che i suoi interpreti sareb- bero stati la Grisi, Mario, Lablache e Tamburini. Si trattava di cantanti ben noti al compositore. Il suo sodalizio con Lablache e Tamburini durava da più vent’anni, quello con Giulia Grisi da più di dieci, e solo per il tenore Mario non aveva scritto alcuna parte. È probabile che alla firma del contratto (datato 27 settembre 1842) Donizetti, che era uso riferire il processo compositivo alle qualità vocali e recitative dei cantanti, avesse già individuato un argomento adatto allo straordina- rio ensemble nel Ser Marc’Antonio (1810) di Stefano Pavesi su libretto di Angelo Anelli. Proprio in quel periodo, il 28 agosto 1842, la popo- lare opera buffa era stata infatti ripresa al Kärntnertortheater. Wil- liam Ashbrook, nella fondamentale biografia donizettiana, osserva che “benché Donizetti avesse lasciato Vienna circa due mesi prima di questa riesumazione, quasi certamente sapeva che doveva avere luogo e ciò potrebbe avergli suggerito di usare il libretto di Anelli come pun- to di partenza di una propria opera buffa” (Donizetti.
