What is most commonly referred to as Bluebeard, however, started as a Mother Goose tale transcribed by Charles Perrault in 1697. The story is about a man with a blue beard who had many wives and told them not to go into a certain room of his castle (Hermansson ix). Inevitably when each wife was given the golden key to the room and a chance alone in the house, she would always open the door and find the dead bodies of past wives. She would then meet her own death at the hands of her husband. According to Casie Hermansson, the tale was very popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which spurred many literary figures to adapt it, including James Boswell, Charles Dickens, Herman Melville, and Thomas Carlyle (x).

Most studies have neglected Vonnegut’s start in the popular magazine market writing short stories. A few notable scholars have focused on the stories: Jerome Klinkowitz, Peter J. Reed, Jeff Karon, James Thorson, and Steve Gronert Ellerhoff. Even with the work of such scholars, there have been few studies that consider the context of Vonnegut’s earliest stories and how the influence of the middleclass magazine market not only shaped Vonnegut’s career but had continued impact on his later novels. This study explores Vonnegut’s first eight stories: “Report on the Barnhouse Effect,” “Thanasphere,” “EPICAC,” “All the King’s Horses,” “Mnemonics,” “The Euphio Question,” “The Foster Portfolio,” and “More Stately Mansions.” The stories are considered within the context of their first publication venue, the magazine Collier’s, and how that context shows connections between the stories and his novels such as Player Piano, Cat’s Cradle, and Slaughterhouse-Five.

Early Life Born on November 11, 1922, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Kurt Vonnegut is considered one of the most influential American novelists of the twentieth century. He blended literature with science fiction and humor, the absurd with pointed social commentary. Vonnegut created his own unique world in each of his novels and filled them with unusual characters, such as the alien race known as the Tralfamadorians in Slaughterhouse-Five (1969). After studying at Cornell University from 1940 to 1942, Kurt Vonnegut enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was sent by the Army to what is now Carnegie Mellon University to study engineering in 1943. The next year, he served in Europe and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After this battle, Vonnegut was captured and became a prisoner of war. He was in Dresden, Germany, during the Allied firebombing of the city and saw the complete devastation caused by it. Vonnegut himself escaped harm only because he, along with other POWs, was working in an underground meat locker making vitamin supplements.

Without skipping a beat, Mailer clasped a hand to your shoulder and said, “Don’t forget that, Sidney. It may be the greatest distinction of your literary life.” When did you realize you had become Kurt Vonnegut’s best friend? Mailer had a touch of the prophet. Even though I’ve written twelve books, he was more than likely right. But it was Kurt who defined our friend - ship. He identified me as his best friend early on and in print—in a 1979 essay “The People One Knows” in Palm Sunday . Kurt told me several times it’s great to be friends with people who don’t want anything from you. Fans were fre - quently after Kurt for one thing or another—speaking engagements, benefit per - formances, reading manuscripts for recommendation to publishers. We were just pals. Of course we shared intimacies but most of our time together we played—tennis at Midtown Manhattan or on summer mornings in the Hamptons, Ping-Pong at parlors around town. We also visited steakhouses and French restaurants and skipped off to movies. We were doing the town together before I really read his work.

Sumner Kurt Vonnegut: Brokenhearted American Dreamer I Slaughterhouse-Five first appeared in bookstores in 1969, and it remains the signature achievement of Kurt Vonnegut’s distinguished writing career. Long in gestation, it oscillates between realism and science fiction, mordant humor and grief, relieved by moments of unexpected lyrical imagery to convey the author’s experience as a young soldier in the Second World War. He recounts for us his trials after capture by the Germans during their last counter- offensive, in the chaos of the Battle of the Bulge just before Christmas 1944. Through the tragicomic alter ego “Billy Pilgrim,” we learn about Vonnegut’s six months as an object deprived of free will. We are with him standing in boxcars bound, in mysterious, stop-and-start fashion, for unknown destinations. We encounter the baseness to which people can descend, as well as the nobility to which they sometimes rise, in the most extreme situations. And of course we find out what it is like to go through the apocalypse – the firebombing of the city of Dresden on the night of February 13, 1945, which Vonnegut and about one hundred other Americans interned there miraculously survived. Then followed days and weeks when the prisoners were deployed in the process of corpse disposal – I will skip the grisly details, but imagine that task, that surreal landscape, for a moment. When he got home Vonnegut was shocked to find almost nothing about the raid in the back newspapers, and came to the conclusion that his government, abetted by the press, could lie.

PROF. REET SOOL TARTU 2014 2 ABSTRACT This thesis was conceived in response to an article titled “How large a vocabulary is needed for reading and listening?” by Paul Nation, in which a selection of written and spoken texts are analyzed with a vocabulary-profiling program called Range. In his article, certain texts that are thereby posited to typify discrete categories, such as the genre of the novel, are measured against the frequency-based lists of 14,000 word families, along with an additional list of proper nouns, compiled from the British National Corpus. The current study, however, takes a revised approach that is encapsulated in a 2013 journal paper titled “Mid-frequency readers”, by Nation and Laurence Anthony. They apply AntWordProfiler for computer-assisted analysis of educational literature by the lists of 25,000 word families, as well as those of marginal words, that have been made from the British National Corpus in conjunction with the Corpus of Contemporary American English. Moreover, their work includes a concise definition of the concepts of high-, mid-, and low-frequency vocabulary. Thus, the aim of this thesis is to adopt and optimize an established methodology applicable to statistical analysis of the active vocabulary of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. and its evolution over a 45-year period that encompasses his career as a novelist.

    The Life of Vonnegut: Conflict and Compromise in Leftist Writing and the American Way Nathaniel McCloud Senior Division Historical Paper Paper Length: 2,499 Words 1 “There’s only one rule that I know of, babies—God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.” –Kurt Vonnegut1 American author Kurt Vonnegut wrote for nearly six decades, exploring a number of themes. Yet Vonnegut described his writing as simply asking “that people be kinder and more responsible than they often are.”2 The request seems mundane, but Vonnegut’s work is politically radical. Acting nicely clearly meant something different for him than the public, yet his work received favorable public attention. The effectiveness of his work came in humanizing the situations through autobiographical elements. Vonnegut is a model for effective leftist political change because he wrote about the perennial and influential American conflicts and ideas that shaped his beliefs, which allowed a shared perspective with the average American. The autobiographical elements in Kurt Vonnegut’s work are only thinly veiled as fiction. Many of his books begin with an autobiographical preface or first chapter.3 The locations of his novels – Upstate New York, Cape Cod, Indiana, Long Island – are all places he lived and characters like Eliot Rosewater, Rabo Karabekian, and John, the narrator of Cat’s Cradle, all ​ ​ mirror aspects of their creator.4 His first novel, Player Piano, was a reaction to his time at General Electric, his last desk ​ ​ job.5 Felix Hoenikker, the absent-minded scientist responsible for the apocalypse in Cat’s ​ 1 Kurt Vonnegut, God Bless You, Mr.
