Artist Rob Heard hand stitched and bound calico shrouds for 72,396 figures representing British Commonwealth servicemen killed at the Somme who have no known grave, many of whose bodies were never recovered and whose names are engraved on the Thiepval Memorial. Each figure of a human form, was individually shaped, shrouded and made to a name. They were laid out shoulder to shoulder in hundreds of rows to mark the Centenary of Armistice Day at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from 8-18th November 2018 filling an area of over 4000 square metres. -

The Ghost Ship on the Delaware By Steven Ujifusa For PlanPhilly Thousands pass by the Ghost Ship on the Delaware River every day. They speed past it on Columbus Boulevard, I-95, and the Walt Whitman Bridge. They glance at it while shopping at IKEA. For some, it is just another eyesore on Philadelphia’s desolate waterfront, no different from the moldering old cruisers and troop transports moored in the South Philadelphia Navy Yard. The Ghost Ship on the Delaware. www.ssunitedstatesconservancy.org Some may pull over to the side of the road and take a closer look through a barbed wire fence. They then realize that the Ghost Ship is of a different pedigree than an old troop transport. Its two finned funnels, painted in faded red, white and blue, are dramatically raked back. Its superstructure is low and streamlined, lacking the balconies and large picture windows that make today’s cruise ships look like floating condominiums. Its hull is yacht-like, defined by a thrusting prow and gracefully rounded stern. Looking across the river to Camden, one might see that the hull of the Ghost Ship bears more than a passing resemblance to the low-slung, sweeping one of the battleship U.S.S. New Jersey. This ship is imposing without being ponderous, sleek but still dignified. Even though her engines fell silent almost forty years ago, she still appears to be thrusting ahead at forty knots into the gray seas of the North Atlantic. Finally, if one takes the time to look at the bow of the Ghost Ship, it is clear that she has no ordinary name. -

S. Coast Guard Headquarters, Washington, D.C. Marvin Perrett joined the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and served aboard the Coast Guard-manned attack transport USS Bayfield (APA-33) as a coxswain of one of the Bayfield's landing craft. He was a veteran of the invasions of Normandy, Southern France, Iwo Jima and Okinawa and he even survived the "Exercise Tiger" debacle prior to the Normandy invasion. Although each of these events has received extensive coverage, his story, and the story of the thousands of young men who manned the boats that landed troops on enemy beaches, is little- known. It seems that the men who transported the troops to the beach were often been overlooked by historians, writers, and film producers. Yet, as Mr. Perret points out, without them, how would any invasion have happened? 1 Mr. Perrett's oral history is comprehensive. He describes his decision to join the Coast Guard and he then delves into the extensive training he received and how he was picked to be the sailor in charge of a landing craft. He also describes, in detail, this craft he sailed through enemy fire during the invasions he took part in. The boat he commanded was the ubiquitous LCVP, or "Landing Craft, Vehicle / Personnel. It was made primarily of wood by the famous company Higgins Industries in New Orleans. -

This ship is the last survivor of the great rival dreadnought fleets, British and of the Goeben German, that confronted each other in 1914. She is also the last surviving warship to have taken part in the Dardanelles campaign; and Breslau indeed, her escape to Turkish waters in the early days of August 1914, almost certainly AUGUST 1914 caused that campaign to be fought when and as it was. We now have another bumper edition and a couple of items to carry over for the next edition! Don’t become complacent though; NWS relies on many hands making light work and original articles or notice of any existing books, websites of interest etc are always welcome. Also we have a new editor of Battlefleet to take over from Dave Manley. Well done Stuart Fieldhouse for stepping into the breach. The standard of Battlefleet is very high but with Members help Stuart will be able to keep the standards up. As stated we have a couple of articles already to get Stuart off to a flying start. Welcome to new Members, Ned and Brad. Anyone who is a fan of the “Terminator” films (and let’s be honest, who isn’t a fan) will have qualms about, “Unmanned Warrior”, the large scale Unmanned Warrior will take place off the west coast of Scotland [Pictures: Crown Copyright] demonstration of maritime autonomous systems. Hosted by the Royal Navy in the autumn of 2016, the latest unmanned system technologies will be on show including air, surface and sub-surface vehicles and sensors from 40 participants including the US Navy and the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation. We are on the path, some would say downward slope, of increased use of unmanned, autonomous systems delivering maritime capability. Watch this space for reports of weird electrical phenomena and figures appearing in ball lightning. -

Names on the Middlesbrough War Memorial The Middlesbrough Roll of Honour of the Great War Supplementary Names, - “C” Compiled by Robert Coulson (1952 – 2008) The names below are found on the Supplementary Panels on the Middlesbrough War Memorial. The names were received for inclusion after the official unveiling of the Memorial, and are included on the 3 supplentary panels. In the years 1914-1918 thousands of Middlesbrough men and women served their country in a time of hardship, stress and suffering both for the troops on the battlefronts and those left at home. After the Armistice in November of 1918 handsome memorial tablets and plaques recalling the fallen were erected in the works, shops and churches of the Middlesbrough area. At this time a committee was formed to consider the question of a war memorial for the town as a whole to remember the citizens who had laid down their lives. In the words of the committee, “We recognise the splendid sacrifice made by our men and we desire that our children and our children’s’ children should hear the story and share in the inspiration which such sacrifice will always give”. The response of the townspeople resulted in the fine cenotaph of Aberdeen granite and the wall of Portland stone containing the bronze panels with the names of the fallen that we see today at the entrance to Albert Park. The memorial works were completed at a cost of approximately £17,000 and the people of the town attended in their thousands for the dedication and unveiling ceremony which took place on November 11th 1922.
