Doreen Heng LIU received her MArch from UC Berkeley and her Doctor of Design from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Her research focuses on contemporary urbanism and architecture in the Pearl River Delta, and the specific impact of urbanization on design and practice in China today. She established her own design prac- tice NODE (Nansha Original Design) in Hong Kong and Nansha, Guangzhou in 2004, and is chief architectural consultant for the Fok Ying Tung Foundation for the development of Nansha City. Her built architectural works include Value factory – Main Entrance & Warehouse renovation – Venue A at the 2013 Shenzhen/Hong Kong Urbanism/Architectural Bi-city Biennial; Nansha Science Museum, Nansha Bookstore, Guangzhou Times Muse- um, Lianzhou Int’l Photography Festival Permanent Site.. Her work has been widely published in many internatio- nal & domestic professional magazines including Architectural Record, Domus and Abitare. Her office has partici- pated in numerous architectural and art exhibitions including the Shanghai Biennale, Guangzhou Triennial, Shen- zhen/Hong Kong Urbanism & Architecture Biennale, Venice Biennale and Rotterdam Architectural Biennale. Since September 2008, she has been teaching at the School of Architecture, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 2011, she was appointed as an Adjunct Associate Professor. Her MArch studios include “Preservation & Deve- lopment: Urban Design on Ronggui Waterfront Industrial District, Shunde, the PRD” (2008); “Post Generic City: The Case of Hua QiangBei District, Shenzhen” (2009-2010); and “1 sqkm Mega Block Study: a Living Museum of Urban History - the Case of Datang District, Guangzhou” (2011); “Thick City Thick Street: the Case of HouJie, Dongguan” (2012); “Design School: The Case of Da Lang, Shenzhen” (2013), “Spatial Transformation in the Age of Obsolescence #1 – The Renovation of the Glass Factory, Shekou, Shenzhen”(2014), and “Spatial Transforma- tion in the Age of Obsolescence #2– The Case of Dong Bin Water Plant, Shekou, Shenzhen”(2015)
In 2012, Doreen with her firm NODE is shortlisted as one of five international emerging architects for Audi Urban Future Initiative (AUFI) awards; in 2014, Doreen was nominated as Curator for Hong Kong Pavilion for the 14th International Architecture Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia. In 2015, the Entrance Building of Shekou Fufa Glass Factory renovation has been honored the Excellent Award for Shenzhen Creative Design Award. In the same year, Doreen has been nominated as Curator for Shenzhen Hong Kong Urbanism/Architecture Bi-city Bien- nial, together with Aaron Betsky, Hubert Klumpner & Alfredo Brillembourg.
