Counter-Memories of Migration and Railways in Southern Mexico By Un/Settlement: Counter-Memories of Migration and Railways in Southern Mexico By Victoria Simmons A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2018 Victoria Simmons i Abstract The Ferrocarril Panamericano (Panamerican Railway) has long served as a space of livelihood, exchange and integration for the communities of the Pacific Coast of southern Mexico. Nevertheless, in recent decades, the historic vitality of this railway, its passengers and communities has been buried under narratives of migrant criminality, terror, and victimhood. As a means of lightening the contemporary weight of security imaginations, this dissertation draws on archival and interview data from diverse locations in Mexico to offer a series of counter- memories of migration on the Ferrocarril Panamericano in southern Mexico. Each counter- memory aims to foreground memories that have been buried and to reconnect historical knowledges that have been separated from one another. It reconnects studies of migration and governance with histories of settlement, transport and state-making. It also highlights the expulsions and dispossessions of today in connection with the transit migration phenomena. Sinopsis Desde su inauguración, el Ferrocarril Panamericano ha servido como espacio de sustento, intercambio e integración para las comunidades de la costa del Pacifico al sur de México. Sin embargo, en años recientes, la vitalidad histórica de este ferrocarril y de sus pasajeros se ha enterrado bajo las narrativas e imágenes de criminalidad, terror y victimización de migrantes. Como manera de aligerar el peso de este imaginario securitizado, esta tesis ofrece una serie de contra-memorias de los ferrocarriles y las migraciones en el sur de México. ii Prologue & Acknowledgements To all the participants who I interviewed for this study, thank you for your time, courage and trust.     An Update on Security, Migration, and U.S. Assistance By Adam Isacson, Senior Associate for Regional Security; Maureen Meyer, Senior Associate for Mexico and Migrant Rights; and Hannah Smith, Program Assistant November 2015 Key Findings migration crackdown has been changes in how migrants are traveling. With decreased possibilities of boarding the train in Chiapas, migrants and smugglers are now relying on different and dangerous routes and modes of transportation, including by foot, vehicle, and boat. These routes expose migrants to new vulnerabilities while simultaneously isolating them from the network of shelters established along traditional routes. Raids and operations to prevent migrants from riding atop cargo trains, known collectively as La Bestia, have been the most visible and aggressive enforcement efforts under the Southern Border Program. Migration authorities have blocked migrants from boarding trains, pulled migrants off of trains, and raided establishments that migrants are known to frequent, detaining thousands. The train operations have prompted concerns about excessive use-of-force and other abuses by the authorities involved. U.S. assistance to help Mexico secure its southern border region has increased, though there is limited transparency regarding dollar values, recipient units, equipment, and training. Additionally, some of the U.S.-donated equipme has seen little use and was reported to be ill-suited for the terrain in this region. For example, U.S.-donated observation towers serve little purpose at the densely forested Mexico-Guatemala border. U.S.-donated biometric data equipment was also observed to be in disuse or only used sporadically. The Southern Border Program brought an increase in mobile checkpoints, and new customs facilities have opened since its launch.

    ANDRADE, JUAN PABLO, D.M.A. Costa Rican Composer Benjamín Gutiérrez and his Piano Works. (2008) Directed by Dr. John Salmon. 158 pp. The purpose of this study is to research the life and work of Costa Rican composer Benjamín Gutiérrez (b.1937), with particular emphasis on his solo piano works. Although comprised of a small number of pieces, his piano output is an excellent representation of his musical style. Gutiérrez is regarded as one of Costa Rica’s most prominent composers, and has been the recipient of countless awards and distinctions. His works are known beyond Costa Rican borders only to a limited extent; thus one of the goals of this investigation is to make his music more readily known and accessible for those interested in studying it further. The specific works studied in this project are his Toccata y Fuga, his lengthiest work for the piano, written in 1959; then five shorter pieces written between 1981 and 1992, namely Ronda Enarmónica, Invención, Añoranza, Preludio para la Danza de la Pena Negra and Danza de la Pena Negra. The study examines Gutiérrez’s musical style in the piano works and explores several relevant issues, such as his relationship to nationalistic or indigenous sources, his individual use of musical borrowing, and his stance toward tonality/atonality. He emerges as a composer whose aesthetic roots are firmly planted in Europe, with strong influence from nineteenth-century Romantics such as Chopin and Tchaikovsky, but also the “modernists” Bartók, Prokofiev, Milhaud, and Ginastera, the last two of whom were Gutiérrez’s teachers. The research is divided into six chapters, comprising an introduction, an overview of the development of art music in Costa Rica, a biography of Gutiérrez, a brief account of piano music in the country before Gutiérrez and up to the present day, a detailed study of his solo piano compositions, and conclusions.
