Giuseppe Meazza, Milan Wednesday, 23 November 2005 - 20:45 CET Group H - Matchday 5

A home win against FC Artmedia would allow FC Internazionale Milano to win the group and take their place in the knockout phase. But the Slovakian champions have proved themselves to be worthy opposition, and, since a 1-0 defeat by the Italian club in their opening group game, Artmedia have remained unbeaten.

Matchday 1 meeting •The only goal of the previous meeting on 13 September in Bratislava was scored by Julio Cruz. It was the first time the two sides had ever met in UEFA club competition, with Artmedia making their bow in the UEFA Champions League this season. The Slovakian side are third in Group H with five points, four fewer than their Matchday 5 opponents, but the same amount as second-placed Rangers FC who are in action at FC Porto.

Behind closed doors •Inter will again be playing behind closed doors as a result of the stadium ban imposed by UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body last April. It came after disturbances during the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg against AC Milan. Previous Bratislava tie •The Italian side have played against a Bratislava club in UEFA club competition before this season. In the 1982/83 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup first round, Inter were drawn against ŠK Slovan Bratislava, then a force in the old Czechoslovakian league. Inter won 2-0 at home and a penalty from Hansi Müller after five minutes of the return put them in control. But Slovan hit back with goals from Marian Takac and Rudolf Bobek, to win the game, if not the tie.

Unbeaten away in the group •This will be the final away fixture in the group for Artmedia, and the club have so far remained unbeaten on their travels. The Slovakian champions suffered a shock 3-2 win at Porto on 28 September after recovering from two goals down. Then on 19 October, Artmedia went to Ibrox and drew 0-0 with Rangers.

Qualifying round form •Artmedia did lose twice on their travels in the qualifying rounds. In the first qualifying round they lost 2-0 at FC Kairat Almaty of Kazakhstan, only to come back and win 4-1 after extra time in a dramatic second leg. Then, in the next round, after a 5-0 home win against Celtic FC, Artmedia again came close to elimination by losing 4-0 in Glasgow. •But the away form picked up in the third qualifying round with a 0-0 draw after extra time at FK Partizan, with Artmedia then holding their nerve in Belgrade to win 4-3 on a penalty shoot-out. The two away games in the resulting group stage have shown the side has plenty of resilience.

Marked contrast •Artmedia qualified for the UEFA Champions League by becoming the Slovakian title- holders for the first time in their 105-year history. In contrast, Inter have twice been champions of Europe in 1961 and 1962 and are in their 44th season of UEFA club competition.

Team facts: Internazionale •Inter are competing in their fourth successive UEFA Champions League group stage. Inter have qualified for the knockout stages in two of the past three seasons, their best performance coming in the 2002/03 season when they advanced to the semi-final stage only to lose out on away goals to AC Milan. Last season Inter advanced to the quarter- final stage only to see Milan block their route. •Prior to the 2002/03 season, Inter's only other involvement in the UEFA Champions League came in the 1998/99 season when they reached the quarter-final stage only to lose 3-1 on aggregate to eventual winners, Manchester United FC.

•Since the UEFA Champions League started in the 1992/93 season, Inter have been more closely involved with the destiny of the UEFA Cup, playing in three finals and winning two of them.

•They defeated SV Austria Salzburg 2-0 on aggregate in the 1993/94 season, but they lost 4-1 on penalties to FC Schalke 04 three years later after the two sides ended 1-1 on aggregate. However, Inter bounced back the following season to claim the trophy for the second time in four years by putting three goals past S.S. Lazio without reply with Iván Zamorano (5), (60) and Ronaldo (70) doing the damage.

•Inter also won the UEFA Cup in the 1990/91 season when they defeated Lazio's cross- city rivals, AS Roma, 2-1 on aggregate. They overcame a one-goal deficit following the opening leg in ’s capital to win 2-0 at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium thanks to goals from Lothar Matthäus (58pen) and Nicola Berti (67).

•To date, Inter have won the European Champion Clubs' Cup on two occasions in four final appearances. The first came in the 1963/64 competition when Real Madrid CF were beaten 3-1 in Vienna. Sandro Mazzola scored in each half, either side of a goal from Aurelio Milani. Rafael Bautista scored for Madrid. •Inter finished in third position in last season's Italian , 14 points behind winners Juventus, and seven adrift of AC Milan. finished a further ten points behind in fourth. •That earned them a place in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, where they faced FC Shakhtar Donetsk. In the first leg in Ukraine, goals from Obafemi Martins (68) and Adriano (79) gave the Italian side a valuable away win. Álvaro Recoba (13) extended their lead in the return in Milan and Elano Blumer's 25th-minute equaliser on the night was little more than a consolation.

•Inter travelled to Slovakia on the opening matchday to face competition debutants FC Artmedia and a goal from Argentinian striker Julio Cruz after 17 minutes earned them a hard-fought win. •Inter won by the same scoreline on Matchday 2 against Scottish champions Rangers FC. The match was played in an empty Giuseppe Meazza stadium as Inter's punishment for crowd misdemeanors last season. However, the Italian side made light of the eerie atmosphere and won courtesy of a deflected free-kick from Chilean David Pizarro after 49 minutes. Inter could even afford the luxury of Julio Cruz's missed penalty, which struck the post after 25 minutes.

•Inter lost for the first time in this season’s competition on Matchday 3 as FC Porto ran out 2-0 winners in Portugal. There was an element of fortune about both goals, but inspired by the brilliant Ricardo Quaresma, they outclassed their illustrious visitors. The Portuguese side had looked on the brink of elimination, but they are now back in the hunt for qualification, thanks to 's own goal after 22 minutes and a Benni McCarthy volley 13 minutes later that deflected heavily off Juan Sebastián Verón. •On Matchday 4, Inter's blushes were spared by two late goals from substitute Julio Cruz as they won 2-1 at an empty Giuseppe Meazza stadium, leaving Porto to wonder how this game got away. The home side struggled to find any rhythm at all and it was not long before they were made to pay in the most spectacular fashion when, direct from a free-kick 30 metres out, Hugo Almeida hit a thunderbolt that flew past Julio César into the top corner of the net. It was not until with 15 minutes remaining that Inter hit back. Porto captain Pedro Emanuel upended David Pizarro inside the penalty area and Cruz dispatched the resulting penalty with aplomb. He then added a second with an 82nd- minute header from Sinisa Mihajlović's corner to provide victory. • To date, Inter have played 44 matches in the UEFA Champions League winning 21, drawing 13 and losing ten with 66 goals scored and 51 conceded.

• On Matchday 4, Inter scored their 400th goal in UEFA club competition. Overall, their record reads: played 266, won 131, drawn 72, lost 63 with 401 goals scored and 232 conceded.

Team facts: Artmedia • Artmedia's first game in UEFA club competition came on 17 June 2001 in the UEFA Intertoto Cup first round against Lithuanian side FK Ekranas. Virginijus Baltushnikas opened the scoring after 19 minutes for Ekranas before Vladimír Kinder equalised from the penalty spot after 57 minutes. • Their best performance prior to this season came in qualifying for the first round of 2003/04 UEFA Cup before losing 32 on aggregate at the hands of FC Girondins de Bordeaux, with Marek Krejcí scoring in both legs for the Slovak side. • Artmedia won the Slovakian first league by seven points from MŠK Žilina.

• That earned them a place in the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round. But it was hardly a perfect start, as Artmedia went down 20 in Kazakhstan against FC Kairat Almaty. However, Artmedia bounced back in the return leg with a stunning 41 victory after extra time. They quickly cancelled out Kairat's 20 firstleg advantage with goals from Balázs Borbély (21) and Daniel Tchuř (52) only for Andrej Bogomolov's strike in the first minute of extratime to leave them needing to score twice due to the awaygoals rule. But Ján Kozák made it 33 from the penaltyspot after 94 minutes before substitute Pavol Staňo headed the winner in the dying seconds. • Their second qualifying round tie was even more remarkable. They stunned 1967 European champions Celtic FC with a thumping 50 win in the first leg thanks to a hat trick from Slovakian Under21 international Juraj Halenár. Blažej Vašcák and substitute Martin Mikluič, who scored just six minutes after coming on, completed the victory.

• It was a dream debut in the competition for Halenár. He only signed for Artmedia the previous Friday from AŠK Inter Bratislava and was sent off on his Artmedia bow the next day. • However, Celtic almost recovered from the worst European defeat in their history in the return leg at Celtic Park. Goals from Alan Thompson, John Hartson, Stephen McManus and Craig Beattie took the Scottish side to the brink of victory but Artmedia held on for the 54 aggregate win. • Next up were FK Partizan of Serbia and Montenegro in the third qualifying round and it was a case of famine after feast as the sides failed to score over 210 minutes. Artmedia finally prevailed 43 on penalties after the second leg in Belgrade. Goalkeeper Juraj Čobej was the hero for Artmedia. He was in stunning form throughout the tie, making a series of saves to keep the home side at bay before denying Nenad Brnović to hand Artmedia a 43 suddendeath shootout victory.

• Artmedia failed to score for the fourth successive match in the competition when they debuted in the UEFA Champions League group stage against FC Internazionale Milano on Matchday 1. The Italian giants were made to work hard for their win in the Slovakian capital with Julio Cruz's 17thminute strike finally sealing the win.

• Artmedia were back to their entertaining best on the second matchday as they again won away in dramatic fashion. They initially trailed 2004 European champions FC Porto after strikes from Lucho González (32) and Diego (39). But Peter Petráš began the Artmedia comeback just before halftime. Then Ján Kozák finished off a counterattack after 54 minutes and Balázs Borbély scored the winner 16 minutes for an historic victory. • Petráš's strike ended a run of almost seven hours (418 minutes) without a goal in this season's competition for the occasionally freescoring Slovakian side. • An inspired performance by Juraj Čobej gave Artmedia a precious away point as the Slovakian champions held Rangers FC in a goalless encounter at Ibrox on Matchday 3. The 34yearold goalkeeper, who saved two penalties in the shootout against Partizan

to book Artmedia's first appearance in the group stage, produced a string of superb stops to deny Rangers their second win. • Rangers squandered a great opportunity to take a commanding position in their group, dominating against Artmedia in Bratislava but falling foul of their own poor finishing and defending. Nevertheless, the 22 draw on Matchday 4 left both sides firmly in contention to reach the knockout rounds. Dado Pršo got the Glasgow team off to a perfect start with a header in the third minute, but Artmedia captain Balázs Borbély levelled within five minutes. Steven Thompson restored the Scottish champions' lead with another header in the dying moments of the first half, before Ján Kozák salvaged a point after 59 minutes, firing the ball in after goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus had failed to clear his lines. • Artmedia are relative European novices with 20 games under their belt in UEFA club competition when compared to group rivals Rangers FC, FC Porto and FC Internazionale Milano who boast over 230 games apiece. To date, the Slovakian side have won five, drawn nine and lost six matches with 22 goals scored and 27 conceded.

AC Milan were beaten finalists (to ), while Club Brugge, PSV, Rangers FC and FC Porto all participated in the group stage. FC Barcelona were knocked out in the second round, the last hurdle to enter the group stage.

• Defending champions Liverpool FC entered the competition at the first qualifying round stage having not secured one of the automatic qualification slots available for finishing in the top four places in last season's English Premiership, but they are not the only club to have played six matches to advance to the group stage a feat shared by FC Artmedia. Head coach profiles Roberto Mancini Roberto Mancini became FC Internazionale Milano's eleventh coach since 1995 on 7 July 2005, replacing Alberto Zaccheroni one day after terminating his contract with S.S. Lazio, and is already considered one of the most stylish and promising trainers in Italy despite his age. As a player Mancini made his Serie A debut on 13 September 1981 for Bologna FC, going on to play for Sampdoria UC, S.S. Lazio and Leicester City FC. He won two Italian first division titles (one each with Sampdoria and Lazio) six Coppa Italias (four with Sampdoria, two with Lazio) and two UEFA Cup Winners' Cups (one with Sampdoria, one with Lazio). For the Italian national team, Mancini won 36 caps and scored four goals. He then started his coaching career as assistant to future England manager Sven-Göran Eriksson at Lazio before replacing Fatih Terim at ACF Fiorentina in spring 2001. After leading Fiorentina to the , he returned to Lazio and repeated that feat as well as steering the Roman club into the UEFA Champions League and the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup.

Inter saw the then 41-year-old as the man to end a Serie A title drought stretching back 16 years and for the second time, having done so when appointed at Lazio, Mancini replaced Zaccheroni. He immediately led the Nerazzurri to Coppa Italia glory, Inter's first domestic honour since that 1989 Scudetto, and is hoping to build on that platform this term in both Italy and the UEFA Champions League.

Vladimír Weiss The son of an international footballer and an accomplished international with both Czechoslovakia and Slovakia, Vladimír Weiss has served FC Artmedia Bratislava as player, assistant coach, general secretary and even club president, but he is first and foremost a successful coach. He took charge in 2001 and guided Artmedia to their first league title in 2005; steered the club to a place in the UEFA Champions League group stage; and led them to a win over 2004 European champions FC Porto.

Weiss spent his formative years at Bratislava clubs Rapid and Èervená Hviezda before moving to second division VTJ Hurbanovo after his miltary service. In 1986 he joined AŠK Inter Bratislava and prospered as a midfield player. Nineteen caps for Czechoslovakia and a trip to the 1990 FIFA World Cup followed before he scored Slovakia's first international goal against the United Arab Emirates in February 1994. He moved to AC Sparta Praha after Italia '90 and won the final federal championship title in 1993. After a brief spell with FK Drnovice, Weiss was signed by FC Košice in 1994 and won back-to-back titles in 1997 and 1998. He joined Artmedia as a player in 1996, turning out for five years before trying his hand at coaching. He was named Slovakian coach of the year in 2004 and has since gone from strength to strength, notably with that famous win at Porto.

Only four years ago, Riley was a member of the UEFA European Under-18 Championship referees' team but since enjoyed an elevated role, living out his lifelong dream by taking charge of two group games at UEFA EURO 2004™ as well as refereeing games in the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Cup.

Domestic news Inter return to winning ways (Sunday, 20 November 2005) FC Porto were the big winners among the UEFA Champions League Group H contenders, while there were also victories for FC Artmedia and FC Internazionale Milano, who ended a run of three games without a win. However, defeat for Rangers FC in the Glasgow derby heaped more pressure on manager Alex McLeish.

FC Internazionale Milano 2-0 Parma FC

Second-half goals from Luís Figo and substitute Esteban Cambiasso gave Internazionale a 2-0 victory against Parma on Sunday evening to end a three-game winless streak. Parma defended stubbornly in the first half, before the home side increased the pressure after the restart and were rewarded with victory by two goals to stay fourth in Serie A.

Coach Roberto Mancini employed a diamond formation in midfield with Cristiano Zanetti anchoring and David Pizarro and Juan Sebastián Verón playing wide, while Figo supported the front two. "To win was really important today as we went into the match after failing to win our last three league games," said Mancini. "We did not perform well during the first half but we improved a lot after the break and deserved to win."

Kily González remains a long-term absentee while Alvaro Recoba returned from Australia with a minor ankle injury after playing for Uruguay in their FIFA World Cup play-off penalty shoot-out defeat. However, the forward is expected to be available for Wednesday's UEFA Champions League match against Artmedia, as is Siniša Mihajlović (muscular). Zé Maria (knee) also sat out the weekend win.

FC Artmedia 21 FC Spartak Trnava The Slovakian champions narrowed the gap to four points behind current leaders Spartak Trnava with a spirited comeback in Bratislava on Saturday. Goalkepeer Juraj Čobej was ruled out with a shoulder injury, but his deputy L'uboš Kamenár acquitted himself well. Kamenár was beaten just once, when Spartak topscorer Vladimír Kožuch opened the scoring on ten minutes. Ján Kozák hit the post seconds later, and both sides had excellent chances but were denied by inform goalkeepers. Trnava were without experienced defenders Souleymane Fall and Jaroslav Hrabal, and their absence told in the 54th minute when Branislav Obžera equalised after latching on to a Juraj Halenár cross. Lukáš Hartig sealed all three points for Artmedia with nine minutes remaining, finding the net with a spectacular winner after being left unmarked. Artmedia coach Vladimír Weiss said: "It was the biggest league game of the year from our point of view and in my opinion the best one, the tension mounting until the final whistle. I was always sure we could come back, we showed great team spirit today." FC Porto 51 A. Académica de Coimbra

Lisandro López and Lucho González were both on target twice as Porto enjoyed their most emphatic victory of the season on Saturday to keep pace with Portuguese Liga frontrunners SC Braga. Porto coach Co Adriaanse named an unchanged side from that which edged FC Paços de Ferreira last week and the team were soon into their stride. Argentinian midfield player Lucho broke the deadlock after just ten minutes, slotting in Ricardo Quaresma's leftwing cross.

López doubled the lead with a header midway through the half, and although César Peixoto did not seal the win with a third until 70 minutes, Porto were always in control. López scored his second of the game with a predatory goal six minutes later, before Lucho completed his side’s scoring three minutes into added time, executing a superb lob after a long pass by goalkeeper Vítor Baía. There was still time for Académica to grab a late consolation.

Adriaanse, who was again without longterm striking absentees Bruno Moraes and Tomoslav Šokota, said: "This was the best result of the season, but not the best Porto performance. We started well for the first 30 minutes and then again in the last 20 minutes, but I will only be satisfied when we play well for 90 minutes. However, I have to recognise that we played well tonight, as we scored five goals and this can bring confidence for the Rangers match."

Celtic FC 30 Rangers FC Rangers fell 15 points behind Scottish leaders Celtic as they lost to their old rivals for the second time in ten days. Manager Alex McLeish rang the changes from the side that lost 20 to Celtic in the . Ronald Waterreus was preferred to Stefan Klos in goal while Marvin Andrews, Brahim Hemdani and Francis Jeffers all came in to the starting lineup.

The visitors fell behind on 12 minutes after Alan Hutton surrendered possession on the right and John Hartson converted Shaun Maloney’s cross. Hamed Namouchi, captain Barry Ferguson and Dado Pršo all had chances to level for Rangers before the break but lacked composure. Celtic doubled their lead on 56 minutes when Bobo Balde headed in Shunsuke Nakamura's cross, and Aiden McGeady added a third from close range on the hour. Rangers striker Pršo was forced off with a hamstring injury and is out of Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League match against Porto. "I felt we were the better side in the first half," said McLeish. "It's a shame we didn't take one of the chances that came our way but we are going to have to regroup. Dado will be missing during the week which is another blow to us, but we must march on."

General competition information Competition summary UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992. •Key dates: The draw for the first knockout round will take place in Nyon on 16 December with matches being played on 21/22 February and 7/8 March. The draws for the quarter-finals (to be played on 28/29 March and 4/5 April), semi-finals (18/19 & 25/26 April) and final are scheduled for 17 March 2006. This season’s showpiece will be played at the Stade de France, Paris on Wednesday 17 May 2006.

•Financial information: UEFA has estimated that the gross budgeted income for the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League will be €598m - higher than the revenue obtained last season. Clubs in the group stage will receive a starting fee of €1.6m and a bonus of €321,000 per match.

Performance bonuses will involve €321,000 for a win and €161,000 for a draw in the group stage.
