Broyde & Shlomo C. Pill Rabbi Michael Broyde is a Professor of Law at Emory University School of Law and the Projects Director at the Emory University Center for the Study of Law and Religion. Rabbi Dr. Shlomo Pill is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Jewish, Islamic, and American Law and Religion at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology and a Senior Fellow at the Emory University Center for the Study of Law and Religion. They are writing a work titled “Setting the Table: An Introduction to the Jurisprudence of Rabbi Yechiel Mikhel Epstein’s Arukh Hashulchan” (Academic Studies Press, forthcoming 2020). We draw some small comfort in seeing that the fruits of his labors still are appearing. in his recently published הי”ד According to Rabbi Eitam Henkin book on the life and works of Rabbi Yechiel Mikhel Epstein, the first volume of the Arukh Hashulchan on Orach Chaim covering chapters 1-241 was published in 1903; the second volume addressing chapters 242-428 was published in 1907; and the third volume covering chapters 429-697 was published right after Rabbi Epstein’s death in 1909.[1] Others confirm these publication dates.[2] The Mishnah Berurah, Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan’s commentary on the Orach Chaim section of the Shulchan Arukh was published in six parts, with each appearing at different times over twenty- three-year period. -

Dear Youth Directors, Youth chairs, and Youth Leaders, NCYI is excited to continue our very successful Parsha Nation Guides. I hope you’re enjoying and learning from Parsha Nation as much as we are. Putting together Parsha Nation every week is indeed no easy task. It takes a lot of time and effort to ensure that each section, as well as each age group, receives the attention and dedication it deserves. We inspire and mold future leaders. The youth leaders of Young Israel have the distinct honor and privilege to teach and develop the youth of Young Israel. Children today are constantly looking for role models and inspirations to latch on to and learn from. Whether it is actual sit-down learning sessions, exciting Parsha trivia games, or even just walking down the hall to the Kiddush room, our youth look to us and watch our every move. It’s not always about the things we say, it’s about the things we do. Our children hear and see everything we do whether we realize it or not. This year we are taking our Youth Services to new heights as we introduce our Leadership Training Shabbaton. This engaging, interactive shabbaton will give youth leaders hands on experience and practical solutions to effectively guide your y outh department. Informal education is key. What the summer shows us as educators is that informal education can deliver better results and help increase our youth’s connection to Hashem. More and more shuls are revamping their youth program to give their children a better connection to shul and to Hashem. -

The Gender of Shabbat Aryeh Cohen Introduction “Women are like men in regards to Shabbat …”1 There are several specific ways in which Shabbat itself, the day, not the tractate, is gendered. Shabbat is called a “bride” (bShab 119a). At the onset of Shabbat, the sunset on Friday evening, the Bavli relates that sages would go out to greet the bride, Shabbat the Queen. Shabbat is “brought in” on command of the man of the house. He interro- gates the woman: “have you tithed?” “Have you made an eruv?” Upon receiving the correct answers he commands: “Light the candles,” (mShab 2:7).2 The Mishnah distinguishes between what a man is allowed to wear out of the house on Shabbat and what a woman is allowed to wear out of the house on Shabbat. The discussions center on jewelry and other “accessories” for a woman and body armor and weapons for a man (mShab 6:1-3). The prohibitions serve to construct the masculine and the feminine.3 However, I want to look elsewhere. mShabbat starts with distinguishing be- tween inside and outside. This should be familiar terrain for feminist theory. However, when we look at mShab 1:1, there is no distinction drawn between a man and a woman. Rabbi Aaron Kraft Dayan EREV PESACH WHICH OCCURS ON SHABBOS: A Practical Guide When Erev Pesach coincides with Shabbos, we benefit from Friday (13th of Nisan; this year, March 26, 2021) or Shabbos having a restful and spiritually uplifting day leading into the (Erev Pesach; this year, March 27, 2021)? The Shulchan Aruch Seder night. Yaakov also declines, because he was married to two sisters, Rachel and Leah, which, at the time, was not forbidden but would later be prohibited by the Torah. So they then decide to switch tack. If the patriarchs don’t see themselves as worthy enough, per- haps the leaders of the Jewish people will. Who better than Moshe Rabbenu – he who went up to God to brings the Torah down to earth! But, surprisingly, he declines because he never entered the Land of Israel. Yehoshua, his successor, the one who leads the conquest of the Land of Israel fol- lowing Moshe’s death also declines. He’s doesn’t see himself as worthy either because he never had sons. Desperation is starting to set in.
