Perichoresis Volume 18.2 (2020): 73–94 DOI: 10.2478/perc-2020-0012 SUBSTANTIAL AND SUBSTANTIVE CORPOREALITY IN THE BODY DISCOURSES OF BHAKTI POETS YADAV SUMATI* PG Govt. College for Girls, Chandigarh, India ABSTRACT. This paper studies the representation of human corporeal reality in the discours- es of selected Bhakti poets of the late medieval period in India. Considering the historical background of the Bhakti movement and contemporary cultural milieu in which these mystic poets lived, their unique appropriation of the ancient concept of body is reviewed as revolu- tionary. The focus of the study is the Kabir Bijak, Surdas’s Vinay-Patrika, and Tulsidas’s Vinay- Patrika, wherein they look at and beyond the organic corporeality and encounter human body not as a socially, religiously, economically stamped noble body or lowly body; male body or female body, but a human body. This paper explores how, like existential phenomenologists, these poet/singers decode the material reality of human beings and link it to the highest goal of achieving Moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth-death) by making body a vulnerable but essential instrument towards spiritual awakening. The paper also reflects upon how these poets have suggested a middle path of absolute devotion to God while performing all earthly duties, seek spiritual enlightenment and avoid the extremities of asceticism and hedonism. Tulsidas By Swami Yatiswarananda (Reproduced from Vedanta Magazine –Vedanta Centre –London - UK – Jan-Feb 2002) The fundamental unity of religious India Our saints and sages, our holy men and holy women, were born in all parts of the country. They may speak different languages but they all place before us the ideal of realizing the eternal relation between the eternal soul and the eternal God. Their teachings form part of our entire spiritual heritage, our common spiritual knowledge. The more we recognize this the more our hearts will beat to the same spiritual tune and bring about a grand union, essential not only for the progress of India but for the whole world itself. Even from the most ancient times the worship of the Supreme Spirit in the aspects of Shiva and Vishnu has been prevalent both in the North and the South. The religious stream flowed from the North to the South and again from the South to the North. It is a remarkable phenomenon in the religious history of India that while Rama and Krishna - the two most popular incarnations of Vishnu -Êthe all- pervading Supreme Spirit - were born in North India, they came to be worshipped in South India also. In the post-Buddhistic revival of Hinduism, South India had become the storehouse of Hindu culture and gave birth to the three great Acharyas - Shankara, Ramanuja and Madhwa. All the three travelled to the North, preached their doctrines and greatly influenced the religious thought of North India. Sri Ramanuja is credited with having founded a Sri Vaishnava School at Varanasi during his visit there. -

Many ancient civilisations, with their characteristic thought, have vanished and their thought forms remained only as a fossil, to be studied by historians. But Hindu thought lived through the ages, and has evolved over the years. Even though a value judgement is neither possible nor desirable, its continuity from ancient times to the present day, from Indus valley to the independent India cannot be denied. Gandhi was born into a traditional Hindu family in a small town. His parents were devout Hindus who followed all the traditions of Hinduism. This had a deep impression on Gandhi’s life, which was carried through all his life. After his early western education, as he started facing crisis after crisis in his political life, he turned to religion for solace. Hinduism was deeply enshrined in his mind, and with the conviction and courage developed through it, he had no hesitation to explore the tenets of other religions, and find for himself, that the same spirit, truth, non-violence, compassion, sense of equity, and concern for all living creatures ran through all of them. It made his faith in Hinduism all the more stronger. -

Versions of Ramayana
Versions of Ramayana pears, as its essence has been expressed in a diverse ar- ray of regional cultures and artistic mediums. For in- stance, the Ramayana has been expressed or interpreted in Lkhaon Khmer dance theatre, in the Mappila Songs of the Muslims of Kerala and Lakshadweep,[5] in the Indian operatic tradition of Yakshagana, and in the epic paint- ings still extant on, for instance, the walls of Thailand's Wat Phra Kaew palace temple. In Indonesia, the tales of the Ramayana appear reflected in ballet performances, masked danced drama, and Wayang shadow puppetry.[6] Angkor Wat in Siem Reap also has mural scenes from the epic Battle of Lanka on one of its outer walls. 1 Sanskrit versions Below are a few of the most prominent Sanskrit versions of the Ramayana. Some primarily recount Valmiki’s narrative, while others focus more on peripheral stories and/or philosophical expositions: • Adhyatma Ramayana or spiritual Ramayana is ex- tracted from the Brahmananda Purana, traditionally ascribed to Vyasa. It is thought to be the inspiration for Tulsidas’ Ramcharitmanas in Awadhi. While the Rama (right) seated on the shoulders of Hanuman, battles the Valmiki Ramayana emphasizes Rama’s human na- demon-king Ravana ture, the Adhyatam Ramayana tells the story from the perspective of his divinity. It is organized into Depending on the methods of counting, as many as seven Kandas, parallel to Valmiki’s. three hundred[1][2] versions of the Indian epic poem, the Ramayana, are known to exist. The oldest version is gen- • Vasistha Ramayana (more commonly known erally recognized to be the Sanskrit version attributed to as Yoga Vasistha) is traditionally attributed to the sage Valmiki. -

Ramacharitamanas of Tulsidas- An Appreciation Suresh Awasthi Ramacharitamanas of Tulsidas, written some 400 years ago, is an epic poem of great poetic merit on the Rama saga. It occupies a unique place in the entire body of Hindi poetic literature and has greatly influenced the social conduct, the values and ideals of the people of North India. In narrat ing the Rama story, Tulsidas' primary concern is to lay down the norms of social and moral conduct, Lokadharma and Lokaniti; but he is fully conscious of his role as a poet, and his greatness lies in maintaining a delicate balance between the poet within him and the preacher and the reformer. Ramacharitamanas is read and enjoyed both by the illiterate and the educated with equal relish; it serves as a source of inspiration, for a better and nobler life. Its influence is wide and deep and many of its verses, which express higher values and truths of life, have merged with and become part of the oral literature of the people. Ramacharitamanas, though it follows the puranik tradition of handl ing the Rama theme and is actually a religious work portraying Rama as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, strikes the reader at the same time as an exce edingly sensitive and creative poem . It is Tulsidas' poetic sensitivity which has enriched many of the episodes of the story and made them moving. In his treatment of situations or characters he imparts to them a certain univers ality and it is this universalisation of various sentiments that makes his poetry great and of eternal value. -

This is the name given to the collection of poems by the celebrated Bengali poet, musician, revolutionary and philosopher, Kazi Nazrul Islam. He was born in Burdwan district in 1899 and died in Dhaka in 1976. He is the national poet of Bangladesh, and also honoured in India. Ahilyanagari Express 6325/ 6326 Indore – Thiruvananthapuram Central (SR Thiruvananthapuram division) Rajmata Ahilyadevi Holkar (1725-1795, ruled 1767-1795) also known as the Philosopher Queen was a Holkar dynasty Queen of the Malwa kingdom. She took over reigns of the kingdom after the death of her husband and father-in-law. She moved the capital to Maheshwar south of Indore on the Narmada River. She also built temples and Dharamshalas (free lodging)at sacred sites outside her kingdom, at prominent religious places like Dwarka, Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi, Ujjain, Nasik, Parli Vaijnath and Somnath. The city of Indore is sometimes called Ahilyanagari in her memory. Ahimsa Express 1095/ 1096 Ahmadabad – Pune (CR Pune division) The name is also sometimes given to 1087/ 1088 Veraval – Pune Express, 1089/ 1090 Jodhpur – Pune Express and 1091/ 1092 Bhuj – Pune Express, as all these trains are “derived” from 1095/ 1096. Ahimsa is a Sanskrit term meaning “to do no harm” (literally, the avoidance of violence or himsa). Ahimsa was one of the main principles which Gandhiji followed in his life. Pune was the place where Gandhiji was imprisoned and where his wife passed away, and Ahmadabad was where he set up his Ashram. -
