Shleimus Ha*Aretz Late Breaking News…. On Tuesday, November 27th the Israeli Government joined “Palestinian” and other Arab leaders in Annapolis for a new round of so-called peace negotiations with President Bush and Secretary of State Rice officiating. The outcome includes a signed agreement that the two sides will hold bi-weekly meetings, starting December 12th , to begin implementing the April 30, 2003 Road Map. Any disputes will be mediated and judged by the United States. Prior to attending, PrimeM inister Ehud Olmert called on American Jews to recognize “the Israeli government’s sovereign right to negotiate anything on behalf of Israel and that Jerusalem is an Israeli issue, not a Jewish one”. In response, a series of protests were organized, including a kick-off rally in Crown Heights last Sunday in front of 770, followed by a rally on Monday in front of the Israeli Consulate in Manhattan and a major protest on Tuesday in Annapolis. A large contingent of Lubavitcher Chassidim was in attendance. Additionally, The Shleimus Ha*aretz Talk Show ran two special editions of “SavingK ’lal Yisroel From The Summit” on November 18th and during the actual summit. Prominent guests included Rabbi Sholem Ber Kalmanson who pointed out that Lubavitcher Chassidim have a special obligation to be involved in the battle for Shleimus Ha*aretz noting that the Rebbe raised the cry against “Land for Peace” more than forty years ago after the Six-DayW ar when Israeli politicians began to speak of returning the territories they had just so miraculously won. As to the argument that Shleimus Ha*aretz is a “political hot button” that might alienate others from coming closer to Yiddiskeit, another guest, Rabbi Lazarus, responded that remaining silent rather than taking a stand and saying the truth to save lives, Pikuach Nefesh, is Halacha, overriding any other considerations. Moreover, he related that the Rebbe was often opposed by others for positions he took but chose to remain firm because that was the right thing to do, especially when it came to Shleimus HaAretz.
