Dear Paul

As you are aware, Allerdale Borough Council set up a cross‐party working group to consider proposals on the warding patterns. An officer group considered all the necessary information and statistics, worked on a number of options and met with the cross‐party working group to present and discuss the work undertaken.

Following discussions in respect of the key principles and options considered, the cross‐party working group approved the key principles underpinning the work undertaken by officers and agreed that the officers should submit the two options attached to this email to the Commission. However, the group confirmed that a number of political groups would be submitting their own proposals so it should be made clear that the officers were submitting the options, with support from the cross‐working group, but that all the warding patterns did not have full political support. Therefore a number of political parties will be submitting their own proposals by the deadline.

The officer group followed the principle of keeping parishes as a whole, which is why the officer recommendation has come out as 49. There are a few wards that are over and under‐represented with 49 Councillors, however it was considered it was impossible to make the numbers up (and 48 members) without splitting a parish.

Please find attached the following documents:

1. County Council Boundary Options – This is the analysis done by officers which explores the possibility of creating Allerdale wards that are co‐terminus with the boundaries for County Council. 2. ProForma Polling Districts ‐ this is the spreadsheet submitted by the Council as part of the previous submission 3. ProForma Officer Recommendation – this is the officer recommendation in the format requested. Please note that the officers are not proposing names for any wards. The officer group believe that this is something that should be done in consultation with Elected Members and the Community.

We will endeavour to get the GIS version of the proposal to you as soon as possible.

If you have any questions or require any further information, please do not hesitate to ask.

Kind Regards Catherine Hadfield
