XI. Franco-Prussian War, Sacré-Coeur Basilica, Our Lady of Pontmain, and the Paris Commune

In the summer of 1870, Napoléon III declared war on Prussia, which led to the disastrous defeat of France. Napoléon was captured during the Battle of Sedan and his empire crum- bled. In Paris, Léon Gambetta proclaimed a republic. The new government decided to con- tinue the war. The Prussians laid siege to Paris in September 1870, causing extremely diffi- cult times for the population of the city because of hunger, intense cold during the winter months, and German bombardment. The sisters in Paris worked steadily despite the hard- ships created by the Prussian encirclement. *

The misfortunes of war gave birth to a national vow to build a basilica in Paris as a sign of penitence, trust, hope, and faith. Alexander Legentil and Hubert Rohault de Fleury, lay members of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, drafted the vow in January 1871. Several years later, Sacré-Coeur Basilica was constructed on the hill of Montmartre in Paris. Perpet- ual Eucharistic Adoration in the basilica commenced on August 1, 1885 and has been main- tained to this day.

In January 1871, a supernatural apparition occurred in the village of Pontmain, which shortened the war. German armies advanced further into France and neared the city of Laval and village of Pontmain, two hundred miles west of the French capital. On the evening of January 17, two boys, Eugène Barbadette and his brother Joseph saw in the night sky above a farm in Pontmain an apparition of the Blessed Virgin dressed in blue and enclosed in an oval, as if in a medal. The appari- tion lasted three hours. A small red cross was visible at the Virgin’s side. Two girls, Françoise Richer and Jeanne-Marie Lebossé, also saw the Virgin Mary. As news of the apparition spread, the townspeople of Pontmain assembled outdoors to pray. Infants and small children who gazed upwards seemed to be excited. One small girl extended her arms to the sky as if she wanted to be picked up. This indicated that many children had seen the Virgin Mary with her outstretched arms, although the adults did not see the apparition. A message written in French appeared at the Blessed Virgin’s feet: “But pray, my children. God will hear you in a little while. My Son allows himself to be touched.” **

German soldiers may have also seen the vision. Some were heard to say that the was guarding the country and that she forbade their advance. The Germans halted and never reached Pontmain. On January 18, Wilhelm I was proclaimed German Emperor during ceremonies in the Palace of Versailles. Paris surrendered to the Prussians on Janu- ary 28 and hostilities ceased soon thereafter. The Treaty of Frankfurt restoring peace was signed on May 10, 1871. France ceded Alsace-Lorraine to Germany.

Forty-three years later, the First World War began. In August 1914, German armies again approached Paris. Testimony suggests that German soldiers saw near Paris an apparition of the Blessed Virgin, which troubled them greatly during the ensuing Battle of the Marne, a battle that the Germans lost. Paris was spared another siege. ***

The Paris Commune revolt broke out in March 1871. There was much fighting and bloodshed in Paris over three months. Revolutionaries imprisoned Archbishop Georges Darboy. On May 24, they executed him, as the Blessed Mother foretold in tears during her conversation with Catherine Labouré forty years beforehand. During these disorders, the Sisters of Charity bravely intensified their efforts to fulfill their mission of service. Sister Catherine was especially courageous.

French President Adolphe Thiers suppressed the revolution during the latter part of May 1871 and normalcy slowly re- turned. In May 1873, Patrice de MacMahon [pronounced mak-mah-on] became president of France. MacMahon and his wife Élisabeth were devout Catholics and Élisabeth especially supported the Sisters of Charity. Élisabeth de MacMahon met Sister Catherine Labouré and was one of the few who knew that it was Catherine to whom the Blessed Virgin had appeared in 1830.

Mary is both a queen and a mother, but she is more mother than queen. Mary’s Queenship and “mothership,” or motherhood, spark to life simultane- ously. In the very moment Mary becomes a mother at the , she also becomes a queen. The Archangel Gabriel tells Mary that her Son will sit on “the throne of his ancestor David” and that “He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end” (Lk 1:32-33). Since Jesus is a king, and since He is conceived in the womb of Mary, and since in Israel the mother of a king was always a queen, (the daughter not necessarily so), Mary becomes a queen. Some texts from the early centuries of the Church call Mary the “domina,” the female of “dominus,” Latin for “master” or “Lord.”

It is not royal blood, but her motherly relationship, that makes Mary a queen. And since nothing is excluded from the realm of Christ the King, Mary is the Queen of that same realm, including both heaven and earth. This realm was not earned through violent conquest or political machinations. The Kingdom of Christ the King was purchased through a blood sacrifice of the King Him- self who died on the cross. Soldiers were not killed so that Christ could walk over their corpses on the battlefield in order to rule a vanquished people from a secular throne. No, of course not. Christ humbly allowed Himself to be murdered so that He could rise forty hours later and ascend into heaven to be seated, like a king, at the right hand of the Father. (Kings sit. Their audience’s stand.) Christ gives the world a new form of reigning, a reinterpre- tation of the words “I win!”

Mary is that heavenly queen in the mysterious vision of the Book of Revelation in which appears “a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars” (Rv 12:1-3). The complex symbolism of this crowned empress encompasses Mary, Israel, and the Church Herself. Mary’s corona- tion, the Fifth Glorious Mystery of the rosary, has not been defined dogmatically but has been celebrated liturgi- cally and depicted in art since early medieval times. The most ancient depiction of Mary as queen is a mosaic from the 500s in a small church in the historic center of Rome! But the feast day of her Queenship was only placed in the Church’s calendar in 1954. Vatican II stated unequivocally that “Mary was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen of the universe…” (Lumen Gentium, 59). After the liturgical reforms of Vatican II, the octave of Mary’s Assumption was abrogated but still recalled in her Queenship being commemorated eight days after August 15, showing the link between the two celebrations.

Earthly kings, queens, and kingdoms, so present throughout the lived history of mankind, are, more cosmically, images or signs of the structure of authority that lies behind all creation. Mankind naturally organizes its public life to ensure peaceful co-existence with others, to promote order and tranquility, and to foster the common good in a thousand ways. This secular response of establishing a structure to manage together what cannot be managed alone is universal and always includes certain leaders to represent the organized community. All of this has a religious equivalent. A sacred canopy hangs over the world. A timeless, divine mega-structure encom- passes under itself all of the smaller, temporary civic structures. The man anointed as king, the woman crowned as queen, the order they impose through a just rule in a secular polity, point to something else - an underlying, and overarching, sacred polity in which God rules His creation like a fatherly king. In this timeless theological un- ion, the feminine presence is felt. The queen mother is there, interceding with her King-Son on behalf of His sub- jects. She worships with them but also receives their honor. The accolades directed at her are deflected, mirror- like, to the greater One to whom she is holy daughter, holy mother, holy spouse and holy queen, our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

Mary, Queen of the Universe, in your Son’s Kingdom, the faithful struggle to be faithful and to be fruitful. We are under your regal yet maternal care. May we please both our King and Father, and you, our Queen and Mother, since all parents are deserving of their children’s honor.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 24 - Saint Emily de Vialar: Born to an aristocratic family, the eldest of three children, and only daughter of Baron James Augustine and Antoinette de Vialar. Because of the anti- Church sentiment of the years following the French Revolution, Emily was baptized in secret, and was taught religion at home by her mother. Sent at age 7 to Paris, France for her education. Her mother died when Emily was 15, and the girl returned home. She managed her father’s house until she was 35 years old, privately devoting herself to a life of celibacy and prayer, and occasionally arguing with her father over her desire to enter religious life. Upon receiving a large inheritance from her grandfather, Emily and three other women found- ed the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Apparition on Christmas Day in 1832; the Apparition refers to the appearance of Gabriel to Joseph, telling him to flee to Egypt. In 1835, Emily and several of the Sisters ar- rived in Algeria to help the sick during a cholera epidemic, and begin her dream of missionary work. Be- ginning in 1840 she tried to obtain papal approval of the Sisters, but secular politics between France and Algeria, and Church politics involving Bishop Dupuch of Alger prevented the recognition until March 31, 1862, several years after Emi- lie’s death. During the next few years Emily established 14 new houses, travelled extensively, and sent missionaries anywhere that would accept them. This put a heavy strain on her inheritance, which had been mismanaged by her financial advisor. By 1851 she was bankrupt. Because of the money trouble, the reputation of Emily and of the Sisters suffered, and they were so poor that they sometimes ate in soup kitchens run by other Congregations. Emily finally moved them all, estab- lishing the motherhouse of the Sisters in Marseilles, France where, with the help of the bishop, Saint Eugene de Mazenod, she began to build up her congregation again. In the years until her death, she established 40 houses in Europe, Africa, and Asia, and the Sisters continue their good work all over the world today. Born: September 12, 1797 at Gaillace, Albi, southern France as Anna Marguerite Adelaide Emily de Vialar Died: August 24, 1856 at Marseilles, Bouches-du-Rhone, France of natural causes; Canonized: June 24, 1951 by Pius XII

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 25 - Saint Joseph Calasanz: Youngest of five children born to Don Pedro Calasanz and Donna Maria Gastonia. His mother and a brother died while he was still in school. Studied at Estadilla, at the University of Lereda, at Valencia, and at Alcala de Henares. Ob- tained degrees in canon law and theology. His father wanted Joseph to become a soldier, to marry, and to continue the family, but a near fatal illness in 1582 caused the young man to seriously exam- ine his life, and he realized a call to the religious life. Ordained on December 17, 1583. Parish priest at Albarracin. Secretary and confessor to his bishop, synodal examiner, and procurator. Revived religious zeal among the laity, discipline among the clergy in a section of the Pyrenees. Both his bishop and his father died in 1587. Vicar-general of Trempe, Spain. Following a vision, he gave away much of his inheritance, renounced most of the rest, and travelled to Rome, Italy in 1592. Worked in the household of Cardi- nal Ascanio Colonna as theological advisor for the cardinal, tutor to the cardinal’s nephew. Worked with plague victims in 1595. Member of the Confraternity for Christian Doctrine. Tried to get poor children, many of them orphans and/or homeless, into school. The teachers, already poorly paid, refused to work with the new students without a raise; in Novem- ber 1597, Joseph and two fellow priests opened a small, free school for poor children. Pope Clement VIII, and later Pope Paul V, contributed toward their work. He was soon supervising several teachers and hundreds of students. In 1602 they moved to larger quarters, and reorganized the teaching priests into a community. In 1612 they moved to the Torres palace to have even mor room. In 1621 the community was recognized as a religious order called Le Sciole Pie (Religious Schools), also knon as the Piarists, or Scolopii or Ordo Clericorum Regularium Pauperum Matris Dei Scholarum Piarum or Order of Poor Clerks Regular of the Mother of God of the Pious Schools; Joseph acted as superior of the Order. The community encountered many obstacles - Joseph’s friendship with the astronomer Galileo Galilei caused a stir with some Church officials. Some of the ruling class objected that to educate the poor would cause social unrest. Oth- er Orders that worked with the poor were afraid they would be absorbed by the Piarists. But the group continued to have papal support, and continued to do good work. In his old age, Joseph suffered through seeing his Order torn apart. He was accused of incompetence by Father Mario Sozzi, who was chosen as new superior of the Order. Sozzi died in 1643, and was replaced by Father Cherubini who pursued the same course as Sozzi, and nearly destroyed the Order. A papal commission charged with examining the Or- der acquitted Joseph of all accusations, and in 1645, returned him to superior of the Order, but internal dissent continued, and in 1646 Pope Innocent X dissolved the Order, placing the priests under control of their local bishops. The Piarists were reorganized in 1656, eight years after Joseph’s death. They were restored as a religious order in 1669, and continue their good work today. Born: September 11, 1556 at Peralta, Barbastro, Aragon, Spain in his father’s castle Died: August 25, 1648 at Rome, Italy of natural causes; Canonized: July 16, 1767 by Pope Clement XIII
