Tyson20 Received 2006 April 25; accepted 2006 June 28 ABSTRACT The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) is designed to probe the correlated evolution of galaxies, star formation, active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and dark matter (DM) with large-scale structure (LSS) over the redshift range z > 0:5Y6. The survey includes multiwavelength imaging and spectroscopy from X-rayYtoYradio wavelengths covering a 2 deg2 area, including HST imaging. Given the very high sensitivity and resolution of these data sets, COSMOS also provides unprecedented samples of objects at high redshift with greatly reduced cosmic variance, compared to earlier surveys. Here we provide a brief overview of the survey strategy, the characteristics of the major COSMOS data sets, and a summary the science goals. HEIC0701: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 19:30 (CET)/01:30 PM EST 7 January, 2007 http://www.spacetelescope.org/news/html/heic0701.html News release: First 3D map of the Universe’s Dark Matter scaffolding 7-January-2007 By analysing the COSMOS survey – the largest ever survey undertaken with Hubble – an international team of scientists has assembled one of the most important results in cosmology: a three-dimensional map that offers a first look at the web-like large-scale distribution of dark matter in the Universe. This historic achievement accurately confirms standard theories of structure formation. For astronomers, the challenge of mapping the Universe has been similar to mapping a city from night-time aerial snapshots showing only streetlights. These pick out a few interesting neighbourhoods, but most of the structure of the city remains obscured. Similarly, we see planets, stars and galaxies in the night sky; but these are constructed from ordinary matter, which accounts in total for only one sixth of the total mass in the Universe. The remainder is a mysterious component - dark matter - that neither emits nor reflects light. An international team of astronomers led by Richard Massey of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), USA, has made a three-dimensional map that offers a first look at the web-like large-scale distribution of dark matter in the Universe in unprecedented detail. This new map is equivalent to seeing a city, its suburbs and surrounding country roads in daylight for the first time. Major arteries and intersections are revealed and the variety of different neighbourhoods becomes evident. -

Titled A Small Area of Land (Kakaʻako Earth Room), the work was composed of volcanic soil and coral sand—deemed by Connelly as “two of Hawaiʻi’s most politically charged materials and highly valued commodities”—sourced from various locations on the island of Oʻahu. Connelly allowed his sculpture to slowly erode in the gallery over the course of its instal- lation, a non-gesture toward what might seem to be uncontrollable disintegration. A Small Area of Land adds a divergent dimension to Euro-American art movements, pushing back against the rigidity and firmness of minimalism and the grand impositions of land art that initially inspired him. In doing so, Connelly expands the notion of “land” beyond a material or merely site-specific interest for artists into something that additionally includes more explicit references to struc- tural systems of dispossession, exploitation, theft, and lasting injustices. -

Through an examination of the work of three seminal artists: Michael Heizer (b. 1944), Dennis Oppenheim (1938-2011) and Walter De Maria (1935-2013), the thesis argues for an expanded reading of Land Art; one that recognizes the significance of size and scale but which takes a new view of these essential elements. This is achieved first by the introduction of the "imaginary" into the discourse on Land Art through two major literary texts, Swift's Gulliver's Travels (1726) and Shelley's sonnet Ozymandias (1818)- works that, in addition to size and scale, negotiate presence and absence, the whimsical and fantastic, longevity and death, in ways that strongly resonate with Heizer, De Maria and especially Oppenheim. -

We’ve always managed to stay productive, with contri- butions big and small to a plethora of projects like the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, the Dark Energy Survey, the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, the Gemini Planet Imager and many, many more—not to mention theory and data analysis, simulations, and research with publicly available data. We have no shortage of scientific topics to keep us occupied.
