Morph rated it it was amazing Shelves: comics-read-in This is still a cracking read with some absolutely beautiful artwork and it just felt appropriate to blow the dust off this one for my first comicbook read of Happy New Year to you all! Maybe storyline aged not much well at all, but this classic cyberpunk tale is the ultimate Machine Man story ever and it totally blasted my mind when it was released in far away Barry Windsor-Smith's wonderful inks and artworks are real ten stars ones, and the debut of original Iron Man makes this volume a must read to all Marvel fans. Jun 22, Eamonn Murphy rated it liked it. Society has changed. The machinery is much more advanced and most people have little work as the ubiquitous robots do nearly everything. The midnight wreckers are regularly hunted down by Baintronics forces. When Sunset Bain discovers that Machine Man is reactivated, she fears for her business and safety and proceeds to hunt him down. Machine Man is a Kirby concept, of course, and the Midnight Wreckers, though young adults, are somewhat reminiscent of those old Kirby kid gangs. The finished art and colouring is by one-time Kirby clone Barry Windsor-Smith who turns in a beautiful job as usual. Early in his career, Windsor- Smith dropped Kirby for the Pre-Raphaelites and began doing very detailed line-work which established him as one of the greats. Odd that he chose to work over Trimpe layouts but maybe he was rusty on panel-to-panel art after doing those high class expensive limited edition paintings. At any rate, the two men combine beautifully and Barry did his own layouts for the last issue. The detailed and beautiful colouring is much better than you get in the standard comic books of the time. That was annoying. A decade later, he had lost those bad habits and the script is very good. Serving up 93 pages of solid story this is an enjoyable read with excellent visuals. The price is probably due to art by the famous Barry Windsor- Smith but you might Machine Man by Kirby & Ditko: The Complete Collection it up cheaper elsewhere. Fraco demais. Decent bit of sci-fi, as the robotic hero, Machine man has been dismantled and then rebuilt in the Machine Man by Kirby & Ditko: The Complete Collection. One of his old foes is still around and running the world using her huge corporation and Machine man has joined up with a gang of teenage rebels, helping Machine Man by Kirby & Ditko: The Complete Collection in their struggle has he tries to piece together what happened to him and the world.     Copyright 2013 Shawn Patrick Gilmore THE INVENTION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: UNDERGROUND COMIX AND CORPORATE AESTHETICS BY SHAWN PATRICK GILMORE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Rothberg, Chair Professor Cary Nelson Associate Professor James Hansen Associate Professor Stephanie Foote ii Abstract This dissertation explores what I term the invention of the graphic novel, or more specifically, the process by which stories told in comics (or graphic narratives) form became longer, more complex, concerned with deeper themes and symbolism, and formally more coherent, ultimately requiring a new publication format, which came to be known as the graphic novel. This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way.

This relationship has also informed superhero comics themselves – going all the way back to Superman’s debut in Action Comics 1 (June 1938). As DC President Paul Levitz says of the development of the superhero: ‘There was an enormous desire to see social justice, a rectifying of corruption. Superman was a fulfillment of a pent-up passion for the heroic solution’ (quoted in Poniewozik 2002: 57).     Since I began reading the work of Steve Ditko I wanted to have a checklist so I could catalogue the books I had read but most importantly see what other original works by the illustrator I can find and enjoy. With the help of Brian Franczak’s vast Steve Ditko compendium, Ditko-fever.com, I compiled the following check-list that could be shared, printed, built-on and probably corrected so that the fan’s, whom his work means the most, can have a simple quick reference where they can quickly build their reading list and knowledge of the artist. It has deliberately been simplified with no cover art and information to the contents of the issue. It was my intension with this check-list to be used in accompaniment with ditko-fever.com so more information on each publication can be sought when needed or if you get curious! The checklist only contains the issues where original art is first seen and printed. No reprints, no messing about. All issues in the check-list are original and contain original Steve Ditko illustrations! Although Steve Ditko did many interviews and responded in letters to many fanzines these were not included because the checklist is on the art (or illustration) of Steve Ditko not his responses to it. I hope you get some use out of this check-list!     Proverbs 1:1 1 Proverbs 1:19 The Proverbs 1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, the king of Israel: 2 To know wisdom and instruction; to comprehend the sayings of understanding; 3 To accept the instruction of intelligence, righteousness, and justice, and equity; 4 To give to the simple prudence, to the youth knowledge and discretion. 5 The wise will hear, and will increase [his] information; and the man of understanding will obtain wise counsels: 6 To understand a proverb, and a sage sentence; the words of the wise, and their riddles. 7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: wisdom and instruction fools [alone] despise. 8 Hear, my son, the instruction of thy father, and cast not off the teaching of thy mother; 9 For a wreath of grace are they unto thy head, and chains for thy throat. 10 My son, if sinners wish to entice thee, consent thou not. 11 If they should say, Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us watch in concealment for the uselessly innocent; 12 We will swallow them up like the grave alive; and the men of integrity, as those that go down into the pit; 13 We shall find all [kinds of] precious wealth, we will fill our houses with booty; 14 Thy lot must thou cast in our midst; one purse shall be for us all: 15 My son, walk not thou on the way with them; withhold thy foot from their path; 16 For their feet run after evil, and they make haste to shed blood.
