UMUC is dedicated to offering on-site and online courses and resources to adult students in Maryland and around the world. Under contract to the U.S. Department of Defense, UMUC is one of the largest providers of education to the U.S. military worldwide and serves 36,000 active-duty military servicemembers. With more than 150 worldwide locations and 110 undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs offered entirely online, UMUC makes it possible to earn a widely respected degree from just about anywhere. UMUC’s commitment to students around the globe extends far beyond providing access to excellent degree programs. An online academic and administrative services portal, MyUMUC, makes it simple for students to register for courses, pay tuition, and order textbooks and other supplies when it’s convenient for them. Students can also access academic and career advising, financial aid counseling, library services, and much more online via the university’s Web site or by phone or e-mail. All over the world, UMUC gives its students what they need to succeed, putting goals within their reach. This catalog provides the degree requirements and recommended curriculum for students who begin continuous study on or after August 1, 2009. (Details are listed on p. 129.) Tom Ascheman, SVD New Faculty 3 IELI 6 Alma Mater – Mother of Souls Dates to Remember 7 Alma Mater is a phrase used in English speaking countries to refer with some affection to one’s school, college or university. Many schools also have a special Alma Mater song that praises the institution as a source of knowledge, values and vision. A direct translation of the Latin words would be Alma = Nourishing and Mater = Mother. In subsequent centuries, alma took on the additional meaning of soul/spirit in Italian, Birthday Corner Spanish and Portuguese. The College offers 26 Jacqueline Hunter classes, practices for personal growth, an environment of intercultural living, 26 Bro. Anthony Kreinus, SVD encouragement of spiritual reflection, and opportunities for apostolic service. All of these varied experiences are intended to work together to educate and form missionaries. Core Competencies. This semester some new language is being introduced to help us think of our life together as “mothering missionary souls.” Last year, the faculty and administration began a far-reaching conversation about core competencies. In May 2019, the DWC Board of Trustees approved five core competencies that were identified in the conversation. They are: • Critical Thinking Acuity • Social & Global Responsibility • Communication Effectiveness • Missionary Discipleship • Intercultural Competence In the coming months I will have the opportunity to write briefly about each of these core competencies.

We also need to think about the “life-long values” that an institution promotes. In an email chain, the presidents of the other Dubuque area colleges agreed. DWC is mentioned in President Boom’s essay, and I heartily endorse his position. Birthday Corner An education at DWC includes greater familiarity with many facts, and it helps develop skills needed for employment as religious- workers and missionaries.
