For the first time since 1975, the number of exhibitors shrank at CeBIT. Why? (Special report from Jean-Jacques Maleval in Hanover, Germany) No need for panic among the owners of this major event. CeBIT (cebit.de), extended from 7 to 8 days, is still far and away the largest computer show in the world. Nevertheless, overall participation shrank, notwithstanding organiz- ers’ projections of a record 8,316 booths and 810,000 visitors. This year, in fact, there were 131 or 2% fewer booths compared to the previous year. From 2001 to 2002, attendance figures fell significantly, by 18% to roughly 700,000. The trams, the restaurants, the city streets, parking lots, press room and expo floor were decidedly less crowded than last year (much to CEBIT’S GROWTH FROM 1993 TO 2002 the relief of those won- dering how CeBIT could possibly handle more people). Many are beginning to ask themselves why bother to travel when all the information is a click away on the Internet. The Company designs, manufactures and markets rigid disk drives based on Winchester technology which are sold to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) as mass storage units for microcomputer-based systems. Quantum sells.directly to major OEMs through a dedicated sales force located in key high technology areas of the United States. In 1984, a sales and service 0 eration for Europe was established in Frankfurt, West Germany. Service for tRe company's disk dr~vesis also provided at the Company's headquarters in Milpitas, the Eastern Regional office in Salem, New Hampshire, and in England through an independent repair center. Quantum's products are distributed in the United States and Canada by Arrow Electronics, Inc., and in other major countries by independent distributors. Products are initially manufactured in Milpitas. When the production process and the product have matured, manufacturing is transferred to the Company's who1 ly-owned subsidiary, Quantum Cari be, Inc., in Ponce, Puerto Rico. In November, 1983, Quantum incorporated a majority-owned subsidiary, Plus Development Corporation, to design and market PC enhancement products to end users. Plus distributes its products through retail outlets, distributors and value-added resellers. In addition, Plus has an account management team to coordinate high volume sales to Fortune 1,000 end user companies. -

Oral History Panel on HDD Transition for Personal Computers Interviewed by: Jim Porter Recorded: August 24, 2006 Mountain View, California CHM Reference number: X3701.2007 © 2006 Computer History Museum Oral History Panel on HDD Transition Jim Porter: We’re here today to discuss the transition in the disk drive industry from those big disks that were used for all kinds of things from mainframes to mini-computers to what we call small business systems the size of a desk, etcetera, which were there in the 1960s and up into the 1970s, that transitioned to those smaller disk drives. It started by going down a little bit to 8-inch disk drives, which are not that big a deal. But we’re here today basically to talk about that transition to 5-1/4 inch hard disk drives. Why it happened, how it happened, and its significance to the industry. But to start, I’d like to ask each of these very interesting people we have here on the panel today to give us a little bit of background on each of them. Let’s start with you Terry Johnson. Terry Johnson: Okay, basically, just to give you a little background, I basically got a... Porter: Oh, you dropped your mike. You dropped your sound system. <laughs> Johnson: I got a Masters degree at UC Berkeley in about 1982. And, excuse me. 1962. Porter: You only lost two decades. Johnson: Yeah, right. And went to work for IBM in 1963, and I worked at IBM at the San Jose facility at Monterey and Cottle Roads. -

THE DISK DRIVE 50 YEARS OF PROGRESS AND TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION (THE ROAD TO 2 BILLION DRIVES) Tom Coughlin*, Dennis Waid+ and Jim Porter++ *Coughlin Associates + Peripheral Research Corporation ++ Disk/Trend OVERVIEW / HISTORY The hard magnetic digital disk drive as we know it today is used in all computer applications, in home appliances and PVR/DVR’s; in automobiles, cameras, medical applications. It is now pervasive in all segments of our society. The technology got its start in IBM’s San Jose laboratories in 1952, with innovators, such as Rey Johnson, Dr. Al Hoagland, Al Shugart, Bobby Smith, and others. The disk drive is unique in its history for overall cost reductions, while at the same time fostering rapid technology growth, and reaping amazing production ramps. Success in this industry has been associated with: • Device Size reduction • Ongoing and substantial cost reduction per MB • Dramatic Technology Increases • High Volume Production efficiencies. As a result of the above accomplishments the industry has grown from a volume of several thousand disk drives per year, in the 1950’s to over 260 Million drives per year in 2003. The first digital hard disk drive was the 24 inch IBM 350-1 which was announced in 1955, and began shipping in 1956. This drive housed 50 24-inch disks, had an access time of 600 milliseconds, and a capacity of 5.0 Megabytes. Table 1 compares the specs on the 350 with the most recent Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 disk drive of 2003.
